If you want to take body temperature, use the method that gives the most accurate results. For infants and children under 5 years, the most accurate way is rectal measurement (through the rectum). For children and adults, oral (by mouth) measurements are very precise. As an alternative for all ages, take an axillary (through the armpit) measurement, but this method is not as accurate as the others and is not reliable if you are concerned about a fever.

- By mouth: For adults or children who have grown. The baby cannot hold the thermometer in his mouth.
- Through the armpit: Not accurate for use in infants. Opt for a quick check, then use another method if the result is above 37°C.

If you have an older glass thermometer, it's best not to use it again. Glass thermometers are now considered unsafe because they contain mercury, which can be toxic to people who touch them. If it breaks, you are at risk of danger

Hot showers can affect a child's body temperature. So, wait for 20 minutes to make sure the temperature measurement results are as accurate as possible.

Clean with alcohol, soap and warm water, then rinse with cold water and dry thoroughly.

Look for a digital thermometer made for rectal, oral, or underarm use. So, you can take your armpit temperature first, and if the result is high, try another method.

- As a general guide, a temperature of 38°C is considered a low fever, while 40°C is considered a high fever.
Warning
- Sterilize the thermometer immediately after use.
- Call the doctor or go to the ER if the baby's temperature is 38°C or higher.
- Dispose of old mercury thermometers properly. Although the amount of mercury in the thermometer is small, it is already quite harmful to the environment if exposed. Learn the protocol for disposing of hazardous waste. You may be able to take the mercury thermometer to a landfill or to a designated hazardous waste area.
