Part 1 of 2: Deciding When to Wear “i.e.”
Step 1. Use " i.e. " to say "that is" or "in other words." Use the abbreviation “i.e.” when you want to add the first part of a sentence and give the reader more information. The information should explain the first part of the sentence in more detail so that the reader can understand it better.
For example, write "I am a vegan, ie, I do not eat any animal-based products" or "He works the morning shift, ie, from 6 am to 1 pm” (he works in the morning, i.e. from 6 am to 1 pm.)
Step 2. Try not to use " i.e. " to say "for example" or "for example". Abbreviation "i.e.” is not intended to provide an example or illustration of meaning to the reader. If so, you should use “e.g.” instead of “i.e. " " E.g.” is a Latin abbreviation meaning “for example.”

Step 1. Write in lowercase and use periods
