After boiling, sweet potatoes can be used for various types of dishes.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Peeling Then Boiling Sweet Potatoes
Step 1. Wash the sweet potatoes
You should always wash produce before cooking it. Sweet potatoes are the same. To wash it, rinse it under running water. Remove any dirt or debris. Make sure the skin of the sweet potato is completely clean before you cook it.
Step 2. Peel the sweet potato
You can use a vegetable peeler or a small fruit knife to peel them. You should also cut both ends of the sweet potato with a knife.
If you have trouble peeling sweet potatoes, brush them off with a vegetable brush first. This will exfoliate the skin of the sweet potato and make the peeling process easier
Step 3. Prepare the pan
Find a pot large enough to completely submerge the sweet potato in the water. Make sure all the sweet potatoes are in the pot and not too full. Choose a pan with a lid.
- Once you've found the right pot, fill it with tap water about halfway.
- Put the potatoes in the pot. Make sure everything is submerged in water. If necessary, add enough water.
- Cook until boiling.
Step 4. Cook the sweet potato for 10 minutes then check
Put the potatoes in the pot. Cover the pot and boil the sweet potatoes for about 10 minutes. After that, open the lid of the pot.
Now the sweet potato is soft enough and you can pierce the outside easily. However, do not stick the knife through the sweet potato
Step 5. Cook longer if necessary
If the sweet potato isn't tender enough after 10 minutes of boiling, cook it for another 10 to 15 minutes. You can also cook it longer if you want it to be very tender like mashed potatoes. To get such results, sweet potatoes should be cooked for about 25 to 30 minutes.
Once the sweet potatoes have been boiled to your desired tenderness level, drain them through a sieve and let them cool
Method 2 of 3: Boiling Then Peeling Sweet Potatoes
Step 1. Wash the sweet potatoes
Flush under running water. Clean the surface. Make sure you remove all soil and dirt that has stuck to the potato skins.
Step 2. Put the sweet potato in the pot
Find a pot large enough to completely submerge the sweet potato in the water. Choose a pot with a lid. Fill the pot with water until all the potatoes are submerged. Place the pot on the stove and cover it.
Step 3. After simmering for 10 minutes, pierce the sweet potato with a knife
Cook on high heat for 10 minutes. Then open it and take the knife. Use a knife to stab the sweet potato a little.
Step 4. Cook for about 20 more minutes
Once stabbed, close the pot again. Let the sweet potatoes simmer for another 20 minutes over high heat.
When the sweet potato is soft, you can stick a knife into the sweet potato without any hindrance. If it's still not tender, you may have to boil the sweet potato for a bit longer
Step 5. Drain the water
Use a strainer to remove the water from the pan. Leave the sweet potato in the pot until it is cool enough to touch. If you want to cool them faster, drizzle the sweet potatoes under cold running water.
Step 6. Peel off the skin
After boiling, the skin of the sweet potato will peel off easily. Use a small knife to make initial incisions in the skin of the sweet potato. After that, you just peel it off easily like peeling a banana peel.
Method 3 of 3: Turning Sweet Potatoes Into Dishes
Step 1. Cut the sweet potato into cubes to use as a side dish
Sweet potatoes that have been boiled can be eaten immediately without adding anything. You just have to cut it into cubes and then add butter, salt, and pepper to taste.
Step 2. Add sweet potatoes to other dishes
You can also cut sweet potatoes into cubes and add them to other dishes. Boiled sweet potatoes can be added to salads, tacos, soups, vegetables, pasta, and casseroles. If you want to add nutrients to a dish, just add sweet potatoes to it.
Step 3. Make mashed sweet potatoes
If you want to make it into a mashed sweet potato dish, don't forget to peel the skin first before mashing it. Boil about six sweet potatoes then use an electric mixer to soften them while adding other ingredients.
- While mashed, add 3/4 cup milk. Put in about half at a time.
- Also add half a cup of butter and 3/4 cup of maple syrup.
