Spiders can be uninvited guests. However, if you find a spider in your house, that doesn't mean you have to kill it! Fortunately, there are several methods you can use to catch spiders and get them out of the house without hurting them. Even if you are a person who is afraid of spiders, you can use this method and don't need to come into direct contact with spiders. Before catching a spider, you'll want to make sure it's not a venomous type so you don't pose a risk if you get bitten.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Herding Spiders Out
Step 1. Open the window or door closest to the spider's location
If the spider is not venomous, there are several ways to get it out of the house. If the animal is near a window or door, you can find a way to get it out. You can start by opening a door or window to show the spider the way out.
Try to step past the spider and open the door or window slowly. If you scare him, he will run and hide somewhere and it will be difficult to find and get him out of the house
Step 2. Look for objects that can block the spider's path
Look for objects such as notebooks, folders, or books that can be moved around the spider easily if the animal tries to run the other way and not towards an open door or window. You can use anything that is long and flat.
Step 3. Lead the spider out
Take a notebook or folder and gently push the spider toward the door. The spider will get scared and start moving. If it moves away from the door, take a notebook and place it near the spider to create a barrier so it can't run in that direction. Keep doing this until the spider starts running in the direction you want it to go.
Step 4. Guide the spider towards the doorway
The beast probably hesitated when it reached the threshold. If the spider doesn't move from the doorway, use your hand, a book or a folder to sweep it out of the way. You can also flick it with your finger.
Step 5. Throw the folder out of the house if a spider crawls on it
If you use the map to lead the spider out the door, it may start crawling up the map instead of moving in the direction you want it to. If that happens, throw the folder out the door so you can get the spiders out all at once. Eventually, the spider will creep away and you can take the map again.
You may find it uncomfortable tossing a folder out a door or window, especially if you live in an apartment. If the spider is crawling onto the map, instead of throwing it out the window, you can take the folder outside and sweep the spider out with your hands or pat the map against bushes or windowsills until the animal falls
Step 6. Close the door or window
Once the spider has been chased out, don't let it come back! Make sure you close the door or window so that spiders or other insects can't sneak in.
Method 2 of 4: Using a Sheet of Paper and a Glass
Step 1. Place the glass over the spider
This method works best for spiders that are on the floor or on a wall. Approach the intruder slowly so that he doesn't feel scared and then run away. In a flash, place the small glass directly over the spider so it gets trapped inside.
- It's a good idea to use a clear glass so you can see the spider in the glass. However, it doesn't matter if you want to use another glass you have at home.
- Make sure you place the glass properly so it doesn't hurt the spider. Don't squeeze the spider or its legs with the rim of the glass.
Step 2. Slide a piece of paper under the glass
Take a piece of paper and tuck it under the glass. Make sure the paper covers the entire rim of the glass. This way, the spider won't be able to escape when you lift the glass.
- You only need a piece of paper, not a notebook or other book. Rigid paper such as cards or index cards is best suited for this purpose.
- If the spider is hanging from the web, you should place a glass under the animal and cut the web with scissors or a piece of paper. The web and spider will stick to the paper and you can lift the glass up towards the paper and trap the spider.
Step 3. Lift the glass and paper
You have to lift the paper and cup so that the spider is trapped inside the glass. When carrying a glass, make sure the mouth of the glass and the paper stick together so that the spider cannot escape.
- One way to lift the glass and paper is to hold the edge of the paper with your left hand, while your right hand is under the glass.
- Lift the edge of the paper while holding the glass above it. Slide your left finger under the paper so that your hand is on the part of the paper under the glass.
- Once your hands are under the paper and glass, you can lift the trap and take it outside.
Step 4. Remove the spider from the glass
Take the glass of spiders outside. Open the door and leave the house. Place the trap on the ground and raise the glass. The spider will run away. If the spider doesn't move, try blowing it gently. You can also sweep the spider by hand if you're brave enough!
Method 3 of 4: Using a Dustpan or Vacuum Cleaner
Step 1. Sweep the spider into the dustpan
If you find a spider on the floor, sweep it into the dustpan. You can also do this method if the spider is stuck to the wall, but be careful not to sweep it at you!
Step 2. Gently pat the bottom of the dustpan
Take the dustpan filled with spiders outdoors. While walking, tap the bottom of the dustpan with a broom or finger. The sound and vibrations it creates will scare the spider so it's quiet and doesn't try to escape from the dustpan.
Step 3. Remove the spider outside the house
Once outside, place the dustpan on the ground. Spiders will usually run away immediately. Otherwise, you can leave the dustpan there until the spider is gone or use a broom to remove the animal from the dustpan.
Step 4. Use a vacuum cleaner
Using a dustpan gets you quite close to the spider. If that bothers you, you can use a vacuum cleaner. Choose the lowest setting and suck out the spider. Empty the filter outside the house.
- You can also use a regular vacuum cleaner, but be aware that this can kill spiders. A mini vacuum cleaner might be a better choice.
- You can also purchase a vacuum cleaner designed specifically for cleaning fleas and insects. Look for information on the internet.
Method 4 of 4: Using Plastic Bags
Step 1. Prepare a plastic bag
Use a plastic bag that can be easily turned over, such as a grocery shopping bag. Make sure the plastic bag is big enough to fit your hand. Also check to see if the plastic bag has holes or tears to prevent spiders from escaping.
Step 2. Put your hands in a plastic bag
Make sure you can move your fingers freely inside the plastic, as you'll be catching the spider with your hands. Approach the spider with your hand in the plastic.
Step 3. Catch the spider
Use the hand in the plastic to catch the spider. Do it carefully, don't squeeze it because you can kill the animal. Try to catch the spider by smothering it in a plastic bag and not pinching it between your fingers.
Step 4. Turn the plastic bag over
Before the spider escapes, flip the plastic bag over so the inside is outside. This way, the spider will be trapped in the plastic bag. Pinch the top of the plastic so that the spider cannot escape.
Step 5. Remove the spider
Take the spider out of the house and shake the plastic bag. The spider will fall. You can also leave the plastic bag outside and take it back later to keep it out of the way!
Tips
- To prevent spiders from getting into your home, you need to seal all gaps around windows and doors. Don't forget to clean the house regularly.
- Spiders don't like the smell of peppermint, tea tree, and eucalyptus. Spray one of these oils around windows and doors to repel spiders.
- Use spider traps. There are tools specifically designed to catch spiders without hurting them or injuring them. The shape may vary.
- If you don't know whether a spider is dangerous or not, it's best to assume that the animal is dangerous and not to come into direct contact with it.
- If you are bitten by a venomous spider, call emergency services immediately and tell them what happened. Remembering what the spider that bit you looks like is usually helpful.
- If you are bitten by a spider and are unsure whether the animal is venomous or not, you should still go to the doctor or hospital.
- Try picking up the spider with a feather duster. It will hide or get lost in the feather duster and will fall if you flick the duster outside.
Warning
- Don't forget to check whether the spider is a Black Widow or a Brown Hermit. Both types of venomous spiders.
- The brown recluse spider is brown, has a violin-like shape, usually 0.5-1 cm in size with three eyes instead of four like a typical spider.
- Black widow spiders are large and hairless. This spider has a large belly with red markings on the top, and red markings on the bottom shaped like a sand glass.
- If you catch a venomous spider, remove it as far as possible from your house and neighbors.
- If you suspect you have been bitten by a venomous spider, elevate the bitten body and seek immediate medical attention.
- Do not try to catch a venomous spider by hand. It's not recommended to catch venomous spiders, unless you have done so. Even so, it was very risky.
- Consider killing the venomous spider instead of catching and releasing it. Don't risk being bitten.
