Natural red hair is notoriously difficult to dye because it holds the pigment more tightly than other natural colors. To dye your red hair to another color and get a noticeable result, you'll first need to bleach your hair's natural color with bleach. After the hair is lightened. You can immediately proceed to the painting process. Simple maintenance techniques, such as shampooing less frequently, and limiting the use of styling tools that use heat, will help you maintain the brightness of your new hair color.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Brighten Hair
Step 1. Try not to wash your hair for 48 hours before lightening your hair
Brighteners are strong chemicals; this product can irritate and even burn the scalp. The natural oils that build up when you're not shampooing will protect your scalp from these harsh irritants. So, try not to wash your hair for at least 48 hours before starting the hair lightening process.
Do a deep-condition on your hair a week before lightening your hair. This will help minimize breakage and breakage from lightening your hair
Step 2. Choose developer power
Unless you have naturally bright red hair, you'll likely need to lighten your hair first to change the color of your hair. Developer is a chemical product that removes color from hair. The strength required depends on the number of shadows you want to lift. Dark red hair will require a stronger developer than bright red hair.
- Volume 40 is the strongest developer. Because they lift hair color faster than at low volumes, these developers are also tougher on hair.
- If you don't use developer volume 40, use developer volume 20 or 30 repeatedly for a few weeks.
Step 3. Mix developer and brightening powder
Choose the required developer strength and brightening powder at a cosmetic store. Also prepare an applicator and plastic gloves. Put on protective gloves and pour the brightening and developer powder in a balanced ratio (1:1) in a large bowl. Stir until evenly mixed.
Spread a towel around your shoulders to protect them from the bleach before starting
Step 4. Use a plastic comb to divide the hair into four sections
Lightening your hair is an easy process if you start by dividing your hair into four equal sections. Divide the hair in the middle, from the crown to the nape of the neck. Then, divide the two segments horizontally, from one ear to the other. Use plastic clips to secure each segment at the top of the head.
Working in sections also helps you achieve a more even result
Step 5. Apply the brightener on the first segment using the applicator
Brighten the bottom segment first. Remove the hair clip from one of the lower segments of the hair. Apply the brightening mixture to the segment using the applicator, from the roots to the tips of the hair. Try to apply the bleach as close to the roots as possible, but not on the scalp. Immerse the segment of hair completely, then carefully pin it back with a hair clip.
Step 6. Apply the lightening mixture to the other three hair segments
Remove the clip in the next hair segment, and apply the bleach in the same way. Pin your hair back and repeat until you've finished applying the bleach to all four hair segments. Apply the mixture in a thin layer to ensure it spreads evenly through the hair.
If you want, you can wrap your hair in plastic or put on a shampooing cap to prevent the bleach from dripping off
Step 7. Wait for 30 minutes
The exact waiting time will depend on your current hair color and the product you're using, but it's usually between 30 and 45 minutes. Never lighten your hair for more than 60 minutes. It's a good idea to set a timer so you don't forget.
Check hair every 10 minutes to assess for changes in hair color
Step 8. Rinse the brightening mixture completely with cold water
The cold water reacts with the lightening chemical and causes it to stop the hair lightening process instantly. Rinse the mixture from the hair carefully and thoroughly. Follow up by shampooing twice to ensure the lightening mixture is rinsed completely from the hair.
If the bleach leaves a yellow or brass tint in your hair, use a purple shampoo to color it
Part 2 of 3: Using Hair Dye
Step 1. Divide the hair into four equal segments
Use a comb to divide the hair into four equal segments. Divide the hair in the middle, from the crown to the nape of the head. Then divide the segment in half horizontally, from ear to ear. Use plastic clips to secure each segment of hair together so it doesn't get in the way of you concentrating on working one segment at a time.
Step 2. Mix the paint of your choice with developer volume 10
Put on protective gloves, and pour the paint and developer components into a large bowl, then mix until completely evenly distributed. Check the manual that came with the product to see if there are additional instructions.
Step 3. Remove a section of hair
Spread the towel around your shoulders. Start with one segment at the top and work your way down to the bottom. Remove the clip on one of the top segments. Use the applicator to wet the hair segment with the paint mixture. Make sure the paint is applied evenly to the hair. When it's drenched, pin your hair back.
Step 4. Remove the next hair segment
Remove the clip and use the applicator to fully apply the dye mixture to the hair. If so, pin the hair back. Continue this process all over your hair covered in paint.
Step 5. Wait for 20 to 45 minutes to let the color rise
Different products and brands have different waiting times, but generally they range from 20 to 45 minutes. Check the manual that came with the product and follow the instructions step by step.
Step 6. Rinse the paint off with cold water
Rinse hair thoroughly while gently massaging the scalp. Continue rinsing until the rinse water is completely clear. After rinsing, you can proceed to the styling stage.
Part 3 of 3: Maintaining a New Hair Color
Step 1. Try to shampoo as rarely as possible
Buy shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for dyed hair so they don't fade quickly. Try to put a few days in between shampoos because the color will fade every time you wash your hair. Use cold water when shampooing, which is more gentle on dyed hair. Try using dry shampoo, which can help extend the time between shampoos.
Step 2. Try using a color toning shampoo product
These products can be found at cosmetic stores, and will help your new hair color look bright. Choose 1-2 brands, and try. There are also semi-permanent paint products that are easy to use and can preserve the color of your hair dye.
Step 3. Do a deep conditioning on the hair every week
The process of lightening and painting is quite harsh on the hair. You may experience damage or breakage of your hair after this process. However, this is normal! To combat it, do a deep conditioning at least once a week to restore as much nourishment and moisture to your hair as possible. It's also a good idea to coat your hair with a nutrient-rich, moisturizing hair mask twice a week.
Step 4. Keep hair styling tools away from heat as much as possible
These styling tools can fade your hair color. As much as possible, reduce the use of hair dryers and prioritize the air to dry it. Even if you have to use it, apply a protective serum to your hair first before continuing. Use after the lowest temperature on your styling tool.
