Kiwi is a fruit that originated in China and now thrives in New Zealand and California. This fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals and is very tasty and healthy. Kiwis can be consumed as is or processed into smoothies. If you're feeling a bit more diligent, try making pavlova, a traditional meringue dessert that uses kiwi as a flavor enhancer.
Ingredients
Smoothies
- 2 kiwis
- 2 cups (60 g) leafy vegetables
- cup (120 ml) water
- Other fruits or vegetables (e.g. bananas, avocados, apples, and carrots)
- 4 mint leaves
(for one serving)
Pavlova
- 4 egg whites
- 1.25 cups (250 g) white sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
- 2 tsp. cornstarch
- 1/2 liter heavy cream
- 6 kiwis
(for eight servings)
Step
Method 1 of 3: Eating Plain Kiwis
Step 1. Cut off the end of the fruit
Before eating, check the outside of the kiwi fruit. Note that most of the surface of the kiwi skin is a downy brown color, with bumps at the ends, which used to be connected with tendrils. This is the only part of the kiwi fruit that should not be eaten so cut it and throw it away, or simply don't eat the part.
Step 2. Test fruit ripeness
To test a kiwi fruit, press it gently with your hand. If the flesh feels under the skin, it means the fruit is ready to eat. If it's still hard, let it sit at room temperature until it softens. Unripe kiwis will taste good when eaten.
Step 3. Also eat kiwi skin
Take the easiest way to enjoy kiwi is directly bite it like eating an apple. Enjoy the contrasting texture differences between the tough skin and soft flesh. Ripe kiwi is rich in nutrients because the skin contains a lot of fiber, minerals and vitamins, as well as antioxidants and flavonoids. However:
- As with other fruits and vegetables, be aware of residual pesticides used in the garden. Wash the fruit in cold water while rubbing the skin with your fingers to get rid of any chemical residue on the fruit.
- Organic kiwis reduce the risk of pesticides, but still need to be washed to get rid of any dirt and other chemicals that can touch the fruit.
Step 4. Spoon fruit
If you don't like the skin of the fruit, cut the kiwi in half. Think of this half of the kiwi as a bowl and spoon the flesh of the fruit to eat it. If not:
- Slice off both ends of the fruit, where the kiwi attaches to the tendrils, and hold the fruit with one hand.
- With the other hand, slide the end of the spoon between the skin and the flesh along the cut.
- Press the spoon deeper into the flesh and twist the kiwi around your hand.
- Remove the pulp and cut into slices.
Step 5. Use a vegetable peeler
Peel the kiwi skin like a potato. If so, eat the flesh of the fruit as it is, or first cut it into several pieces. However, you need to remember that:
The skin of the fruit must still be washed before peeling. Even if the skin is not eaten, your vegetable peeler can transfer dirt and chemicals from the skin to the flesh as you peel
Method 2 of 3: Trying Other Kiwi Smoothies
Step 1. Don't forget to cut both ends of the fruit
Whether the skin of the fruit will be peeled or not is up to you. However, you should not forget to cut the ends of the fruit that used to be connected to the vine. This part is not edible so throw it away before using the fruit.
Step 2. Pair the kiwi with the strawberries
Cut the kiwi in half and put it in a blender. Add one cup (150 grams) of strawberries and two cups (60 grams) of leafy greens such as spinach. Pour in half a cup (120 ml) of water and blend until smooth.
Step 3. Try kiwi with banana and avocado
Cut two kiwis and one banana and put them in a blender. Cut a quarter of an avocado and add it to the rest of the fruit. Add 2 cups (60 grams) of leafy greens and cup (120 ml) of water and mix until smooth.
Step 4. Choose a carrot-apple combination
Slice 2 kiwis and 1 apple and 1 whole carrot. Place everything in a blender along with 2 cups (60 grams) of greens. Pour in half a cup (120 ml) of water. Blend until smooth.
Step 5. Add min
Cut two kiwis and one banana and put them in a blender. Add 2 cups (60 grams) of leafy greens, plus 4 min. Mix together cup (120 ml) of water until smooth.
Method 3 of 3: Giving Pavlova. Kiwi Topping
Step 1. Prepare the oven and cake pan
First, set the oven to 150 degrees Celsius. While it is heating, line the baking sheet with parchment paper. On paper, make a circle about 23 cm in diameter.
Step 2. Make meringues
Open the egg and remove the yolk. Place the egg whites in a mixing bowl and beat. Add 1 tbsp. sugar and mix while beating the egg whites, then repeat until you have added all the sugar. When the mixture is thick and shiny, add the vanilla extract, lemon juice, and cornstarch.
Step 3. Fill the circle, then bake
Use a spoon to transfer the meringue into circles traced on the parchment paper. When all the meringues have been removed, use a spoon to spread the meringues from the center to the edges. Continue until the edges of the dough are higher than the center. Place the cake pan in the oven and bake for 1 hour.
Step 4. Put your toppings on the meringue
When the meringues are done, transfer them to a wire rack to cool. While this is the case, beat the heavy cream in a small mixing bowl until the surface looks stiff. Peel and slice the kiwi as evenly as possible. When the meringues have cooled, transfer them to a plate, fill the center with whipped cream, arrange the kiwi topping on top, and serve.
