The first week of summer was fun. In the second week, you almost want to get back to school early. Get that thought out of your head. There's a lot of activity out there, so take your day and see what catches your eye.
Step
Method 1 of 5: Developing New Abilities and Interests
Step 1. Learn a new hobby
Is there something you've always wanted to learn, but didn't think you could do? Summer can give you plenty of time to learn something new. Here are some things that are recommended:
- Learn to play a musical instrument.
- Learn to sing or dance.
- Try a new art form like photography or knitting.
Step 2. Play a sport
In many places, summer is a great time of year to play an outdoor sport, as long as you can withstand the heat. If you don't already have your favorite sport, there's no better time to choose one.
- Gather your friends or join your class to play a team sport such as football (association football), basketball or field hockey.
- Find activities for one or two people, such as surfing, urban golf, or tennis.
Step 3. Make a movie
Get some of your friends together and discuss a movie idea. This can be anything from a science fiction story, a cooking competition show, or a music video. If you're starting this project, then you'll need weeks of fun work planning the storyboard, costumes, recruiting additional cast, and editing the film.
You can also have the idea of making a series or smaller videos, and starting a Youtube channel
Step 4. Start a radio show
Grab a recording program or tape recorder and start your own show. Write down a list of things you want to include in your show: music, jokes, interviews, commercials, real or fake news commentary, etc.
Step 5. Find a craft project
Art and craft projects require time and patience that you didn't have in school, but are great activities for the summer. Here are some ideas:
- Fold the heart shape out of the paper. You can cut a heart-shaped notepad for your loved one, or take a square piece of origami paper for a prettier shape. There are more other origami origami projects you can try.
- Make rainbow colored crayons, or try melting crayons on hot rocks to create art.
- Make your own slime or toy wax. Use these weird materials for fun, or just play with them for fun.
- Make a hot air balloon with the sun's heat. These balloons can travel hundreds of miles in a day, and are very easy to make.
Step 6. Master the tricky game
There are more games than you can ever play in your life, but summer will give you the opportunity to choose one game until you reach the level of strategy master. Some games like bridge, chess, magic, or Starcraft II even have international tournaments with big prizes for the winners.
Step 7. Learn to cook
If you don't know how to cook or you don't know much about food, you can learn some of the recipes now. There are thousands of recipes available online or in cookbooks from your library or bookstore, or you can try these easy ideas to get started.
- Make the juice fresh and cold. Try different or even weird combinations, to make a cool and refreshing summer drink, or challenge your friends to drink a suspicious concoction.
- Make peanut butter chocolate ice cream for a delicious dessert.
- Make hummus as a biscuit dip. If you are ambitious, you can also make your own bread.
Method 2 of 5: Focusing on Self Development
Step 1. Get a summer job
This will keep you busy, introduce you to new people, and earn you some money. Many retail businesses, tourist attractions, or summer festivals require workers for the summer.
Step 2. Volunteer
Helping your community can be a fulfilling, uplifting activity, and of course you work for a good cause. Look for organizations in your area that work to pick up trash, work with injured or abandoned animals, or work on political issues.
Volunteering is also an activity that looks good for college application applications, although interviews and essays will look better if you are genuinely interested in the job
Step 3. Take a look at the piles of books in the library
Books can take you to another world, or allow you to see things from a different perspective. Try to learn whatever you can on a particular topic, such as Norse mythology, Japanese history, or space travel.
If you want to learn even more, try taking online classes. Some of the world's top universities even post classes on the internet, and these classes are often more interesting than high school classes
Step 4. Start a journal
Many people keep journals to reflect on their day, overcome struggling times, or write plans for tomorrow. Perhaps, in the next few years, you will read it again and smile at the memories of the summer.
Step 5. Write a novel
This is a great project, one that can fill your entire summer and keep you inspired. If you're not sure how to start, try writing a story similar to your favorite author, or work with a friend so you can exchange ideas.
Step 6. Learn a language
Knowing a foreign language can lead you to many opportunities, as well as looking good in your college enrollment. Start by looking for classes for beginners near you, or ask a friend or family member to teach you a foreign language they know. Look for free language lessons, study aids, or foreign language conversation partners online.
Method 3 of 5: Finding and Organizing Events
Step 1. Go to local events
Most areas host night markets, festivals, carnivals or other fun events throughout the summer. Check your city's dates online, or ask other people in the area if they've heard of plans to host events. Visit websites or ads for nearby event venues, including concert locations, theaters, and sports stadiums.
Step 2. Act like a tourist in your own city
See what attracts people from other cities to visit your city from your tourism website or local event flyer. There could be a museum to a merry-go-round hidden in your city, or in an area just a short walk away.
Step 3. Go camping
Spend a few days with friends or family at a campsite, or camp in the garden behind your house. Gather friends around a campfire or barbecue to tell scary stories and make s'mores.
Step 4. Perform geocaching
Find a geocaching site on the internet, and search a location near you to see if someone has hidden a gift. You can search for these hidden objects or hide your gifts by using a GPS device or by finding the coordinates of their location on a map.
Step 5. Create an indoor vacation
If the weather, transportation, or lack of events keep you from leaving the house, take a fake vacation. Invite some friends over to stay and decorate your room like a castle, forest, or whatever you like. Go shopping for unusual treats and “souvenirs” to share with your guests. If it's raining, put on a swimsuit and sunglasses and lie indoors pretending you're visiting a place that has real summer.
Step 6. Call an old friend
If your friends are out of town or busy right now, go through your old yearbook, phone contact, or email and get back to people you used to know. Any of the activities on the list above will be more enjoyable to do with friends, or you could also spend an afternoon chatting with each other or reminiscing about the past.
Method 4 of 5: Fun in the Hot Air
Step 1. Go swimming
If you live in an area with hot summers, you can have fun and cool off at the same time. Visit the beach or pool with friends or family. Play underwater games like Marco Polo or Shark Attack, have a swimming match, or gather friends for a game of water polo.
Step 2. Cool down with activities with water
Even if you don't have a place to swim, you can find other ways to have fun with the water. Put on a bathing suit or other light clothing that can get wet, and find some hot friends to join you in the following activities:
- Turn on a sprinkler in your yard and play chase, no-seek, or a game of red rover amidst the gushing water.
- Do a water war. Fill some water balloons, buy an inexpensive water gun at the store, or use a plant watering hose. This can be a fun one-off activity… or the start of a series of water battles.
Step 3. Make cold drinks and sweet dishes
A cold drink or a bowl of ice cream would be great on a hot day. Making it yourself is even better for getting rid of boredom.
- Try making your own ice cream, in the classic way using “salt and ice” or in a way that creates a creamy, rich taste like real ice cream.
- Make popsicles and stock your fridge for summer reserves.
- Fill your fridge with ginger ale or lemonade.
Step 4. Rest in the room
Find a cool, shady room, or build a blanket fort out of light sheets to provide some protection from the sun. Turn on the fan, find a book to read, and wait for the hottest time of the day to pass.
Other relaxing indoor activities include sewing, playing solitaire or other card games, watching a movie, or listening to music
Step 5. Play as the sun begins to set
When it's getting late in the afternoon and the temperature is getting cooler, gather your friends to play games like hide-and-seek, no statues or catch the flag in a large yard or park. If the afternoon is still too hot for physical activity, set up a table outside and play a card game or board game when the air is cool enough.
- Choose a board game that won't blow away, such as a game of Carcassonne, Tikal, or Blokus. These are fairly well-known games that are widely available in game stores, but classics like chess, checkers, or any board game that uses a portable magnet will be easier to find.
- Strategy-packed card games like Hearts can be played in windy environments, as long as you have a rock or any heavy object to hold the cards up.
Method 5 of 5: Decorate and Stylish
Step 1. Arrange or decorate your room
Some people like this activity more than others, but if you don't really like decorating a room this activity is still better than sitting around doing nothing. Even sorting through piles of old stuff can help you find old toys, books, or other items from the past. For larger projects, repaint your room or hang posters and paintings or photographs.
Step 2. Pick flowers in your area of the house
See how many types of wildflowers you can find in your nearby yard or field. Make a bouquet, or felt flowers for a permanent decoration. The leaves can also be dried for use in various craft projects or to be kept as decoration.
Do not pick flowers from other people's yards without permission, or if the flowers appear to have been planted on purpose
Step 3. Make your own beauty treatment
There are hundreds of treatment recipes that you can make yourself, using yogurt, avocado, or other natural ingredients. Open your kitchen cupboards and reward yourself with an inexpensive day spa treatment.
Step 4. Update your clothes
Go through your clothes, and choose the ones you don't want/too small for you. Invite some friends to visit, and ask them to come with some clothes/other things they don't want. Swap clothes for something else, or sell them at the thrift market for some cash.
