The compass in Minecraft is used to direct the player to the original spawn point. The compass will show the direction if used anywhere, whether on chests, floors, inventory or in the hands of a character. However, the compass will not work if used in the worlds of The Nether or The End. Here's how to make a compass.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Gathering the Ingredients
Step 1. Collect four iron ingots and one redstone
Part 2 of 3: Making a Compass
Step 1. Check if you really need a compass
If your stock of ingots and/or redstone is running low, simply look at the compass direction when these items are placed in the crafting table, but don't activate them.
- You can also view the compass on the object statistics page if you have made a compass before. This means you can see directions without even having to use the crafting table.
- If you need a compass to make map paper, you have to assemble it.
Step 2. Assemble the compass
Place four ingots and one redstone into the crafting table as follows:
- Place the redstone in the center of the grid.
- Place four ingots on top, bottom and sides of the redstone.
- Wait for the compass to finish assembling.
- Shift click or drag the compass into the inventory.
Part 3 of 3: Assembling Using a Compass
Step 1. Create a map
To make a map using a compass, surround the compass with paper.
- Open the crafting grid and place the compass in the center.
- Place the paper in all the other empty slots.
Step 2. Assemble the map
Shift+click or drag to place the map into inventory.
