Good chile is traditionally cooked and requires hours of attention, but with a crock pot, you just mix all the ingredients together and let it cook. Prepare your chili in the morning and come home in the afternoon to the aroma of a fragrant dish made with dried beans and lots of spices. Keep reading this article to learn how to make one.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 2 pounds (0.9 kg) beef
- 1 large onion
- 1 green bell pepper
- 1 red bell pepper
- 2 14-ounce cans of tomatoes
- 4 cloves garlic
- 3 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 6 oz. bottle of sliced jalapeno
- 1 cup dry pinto beans
- 1 cup dry kidney beans
Step
Method 1 of 3: Preparing the Ingredients
Step 1. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat
Step 2. Cook beef in skillet until brown
Use a spatula to break it into pieces as it cooks. Continue to cook the beef until it is brown and keep cracking it until it is cooked through.
Step 3. Remove and transfer the beef to a plate
Step 4. Cut the onions into cubes
Step 5. Cut the green and red peppers into cubes
Step 6. Chop the garlic
Method 2 of 3: Cooking Chili
Step 1. Put all the ingredients into the skillet
Step 2. Add enough water to cover all the ingredients
Step 3. Close the cauldron
Step 4. Cook the chiles on high heat for 6-8 hours
Step 5. Serve the chiles
When done, the chiles will have a dark red-brown hue. Serve with chopped onions and cake slices or tortilla chips.
Method 3 of 3: Trying Different Variations
Step 1. Make a crock pot of white bean chile
This delicious variation of skillet-cooked chile uses turkey instead of beef. Substitute kidney beans and pinto beans for great northern beans, and use lots of green pepper.
Step 2. Make Texas-style crock pot chile
You can skip the beans and opt for 2 pounds (0.9 kg) of sirloin steak over beef. Cook the meat and vegetables slowly until the meat is tender.
Step 3. Make a vegetarian chili crock pot
Replace the pork with extra black beans, and add carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, and any other vegetables you like. Soak the chile ingredients in the vegetable stock instead of the water. After cooking for 6-8 hours, your vegetarian chili will be delicious.

Tips
- Tomatoes are not really necessary for chili. To enhance the taste, or avoid allergies, replace tomato juice with beef broth or other liquid.
- Try garnishing the chili with a sprinkling of fresh cuts such as onions, cilantro, tomatoes and cheese, chili powder, and more.
- Some peppers are spicier than others. Choose your peppers carefully. If you're using a very spicy variety, try adding small, seedless, cored peppers for starters; you can always add more later anyway.
- If you like chili that doesn't have much of a "beef" flavor, try adding half a can of ketchup halfway through the cooking process.
