Instead of buying jewelry cleaner, use baking soda! It is a gentle cleanser that works great for cleaning a wide variety of jewelry types, including gold, silver, synthetic gold, and gold-plated items. Make a paste of baking soda to rub into dirty jewelry, or soak slightly soiled jewelry in the baking soda solution. For gold-tone, nickel-plated, and sterling silver-plated jewelry, add salt and dish soap to make it cleaner. With the right method, baking soda can make your jewelry look shiny and new.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Performing a Simple Clean
Step 1. Pour 250 ml of hot water into a bowl
Prepare a bowl with a size that matches the size of the jewelry to be cleaned. Usually, you only need 250 ml of hot water to clean your jewelry. Use hot water from the tap or microwave the water for 30 seconds or more.
Use a little more water to clean a large necklace, for example
Step 2. Mix 5-10 grams of baking soda
Use a measuring device to scoop out 5-10 grams of baking soda and pour it into a bowl. After that, stir all the ingredients with a spoon to dissolve the baking soda.
If you have trouble mixing the baking soda with the water, microwave it for 30 seconds or more
Step 3. Soak the jewelry in the baking soda solution for 5-10 minutes
Place the jewelry in a bowl containing the baking soda solution. Make sure the jewelry is completely submerged in water. After that, set the timer to 5-10 minutes for the baking soda to work optimally. You can clean many jewels at the same time.
The baking soda solution can remove dust and dirt on the surface so that all types of jewelry will look cleaner
Step 4. Rinse the jewelry in cold water to remove any remaining baking soda and residue
After the jewelry has been soaked for a while, it will look cleaner. Remove the jewelry from the bowl, pour the solution into the drain hole and rinse the jewelry under cold water.
If you have rings or small earrings, fill a bowl with cold water and put the jewelry in it. In this way, the jewelry will not fall out of hand. Do this with other precious pieces of jewelry, if you wish
Step 5. Pat the jewelry with a clean towel
After rinsing the jewelry, find a clean washcloth or kitchen paper to remove excess water. Be sure to dry your jewelry immediately to keep it in good condition.
Put your jewelry on immediately or place it in a jewelry box
Method 2 of 3: Cleaning Stubborn Stains
Step 1. Mix baking soda and water in a 3:1 ratio
Take a small bowl and add the baking soda and water in a 3:1 ratio to form a paste-like solution. Adjust the amount of baking soda to the amount of jewelry cleaned.
- For example, mix 50 grams of baking soda with 15 grams of water to clean some jewelry.
- This is a powerful method of removing stubborn residue from heavily soiled or heavily stained jewelry.
Step 2. Mix all the ingredients until you get a paste-like consistency
Use the back of the toothbrush to mix the baking soda and water. Keep stirring until you get a solid paste. If you have trouble stirring the ingredients, just add a few drops of water.
If you want it easier, use a spoon to mix the ingredients
Step 3. Dip a clean toothbrush in the paste until the bristles stick together
Take enough paste to cover the entire surface of the jewelry. Make sure the paste is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the bristles.
- If you need to add baking soda during this process, simply dip the brush back in.
- If you don't have an extra toothbrush, use a cotton swab instead. Never use a dirty toothbrush because it can damage jewelry or spread germs.
Step 4. Scrub the surface of the jewelry gently with a toothbrush
You can hold the jewelry in your hand or place it on a paper towel while cleaning. After this, point the bristles at the jewelry and move the toothbrush back and forth repeatedly. Rub one piece of jewelry at a time.
For best results, use a soft-bristled brush. This tool is effective in cleaning the narrow gaps in pendants, bracelets and rings
Step 5. Continue the brushing process for 1-2 minutes to thoroughly clean
Brushing duration depends on the size and condition of the jewelry. In general, you should brush until stubborn residue is gone.
To check the cleanliness of the jewelry, simply wipe the surface with baking soda and see the results
Step 6. Rinse off the baking soda and stain with cold water
After scrubbing the jewelry thoroughly, you can dip it in a glass of water or rinse it under the tap. Soak the jewelry for 30 seconds or more to remove the baking soda.
Step 7. Place the jewelry on a towel to dry
Spread a clean towel next to the sink, then place your jewelry on it after rinsing thoroughly. Leave the jewelry on a towel for 5-10 minutes to allow it to dry completely.
Method 3 of 3: Cleaning Imitation Gold and Silver Jewelry
Step 1. Heat 250 ml of water in the microwave for 1-2 minutes
Put about 250 ml of water in a heatproof bowl. After that, set the alarm to 1-2 minutes to warm the water.
Step 2. Place the aluminum foil in the bowl to keep the jewelry small
Cut some aluminum foil to the shape and size of the bowl, then use it as a base on the inside of the bowl.
If you are cleaning large pieces of jewelry, the paper is not needed. Paper fitting is required to prevent small earrings and necklace pendants from being lost
Step 3. Pour 15 grams of salt, baking soda and dish soap into a bowl
To make a cleaning solution, mix 15 grams of table salt, 15 grams of baking soda and 15 ml of dish soap with a spoon.
This combination is very effective for removing stubborn stains
Step 4. Soak the jewelry for 5-10 minutes
You can put a few small pieces of jewelry in the bowl as long as you make sure they're completely submerged. If you're cleaning small pieces of jewelry, place them on aluminum foil so they're easy to find.
If you want, use a timer to monitor the cleaning duration
Step 5. Pour in the cleaning solution and rinse the jewelry
The water will remove any excess salt, baking soda, or soap, as well as remove any flaking stains.
Your jewelry is clean if there are no bubbles or residue in the water
Step 6. Dry the jewelry with a towel after cleaning
Before putting on your jewelry or putting it away, use a clean towel to wipe it clean. You can also use a washcloth or kitchen tissue for this purpose.
