Baking soda is a simple yet versatile cleaning agent that can effectively lift new ones off furniture. You can sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress to reduce unpleasant odors and keep it clean. Remove the sheets from the mattress and sprinkle some baking soda. After that, you can remove the remaining baking soda using a vacuum cleaner. The mattress will come back clean and smell fresh.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Preparing for Mattress Cleaning
Step 1. Remove the sheets and wash in the washing machine
First, remove the sheets, blanket, or duvet from the bed. Put the sheets and equipment in the washing machine and clean using detergent, as well as setting the hottest temperature to kill germs.
Dry all equipment on the highest heat setting to prevent germs or bacteria from adhering to it
Step 2. Remove dust and dirt from the surface of the mattress using a vacuum cleaner
Use the pillow-only nozzle on a vacuum cleaner or hand vacuum cleaner with high suction power. Make sure the nozzle is clean so that the remaining dirt and dust does not move to the surface of the mattress. Clean the gaps, seams, and folds of the mattress to remove dirt and grime.
Make sure you also clean the side of the mattress because usually dirt and dust collects in this area
Step 3. Use a spot cleaning product on the stains on the mattress
You can use a pillow or mattress cleaning product, or make your own cleaning solution by mixing 5 ml of dish soap and 240 ml of water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture directly on the stain, then dab a dampened cloth over the stain to lift it.
Usually, stains that contain protein such as sweat, urine, and blood can be removed using regular spot cleaning products. However, other stains such as red wine or coffee residue are more difficult to remove and require a more powerful cleaning product
Part 2 of 3: Using Baking Soda
Step 1. Sprinkle 200-620 grams of baking soda on the mattress
Spread as much baking soda as needed over the mattress, especially if the mattress hasn't been cleaned in a while or smells bad. Coat the entire surface of the mattress with baking soda evenly.
If there are areas of the mattress that smell strongly, sprinkle more baking soda on those areas to neutralize the odor
Step 2. Place the mattress in an area exposed to direct sunlight
Ideally, you should move the mattress to a window that has direct sunlight, as the heat from the sun helps the baking soda work more effectively.
To increase the effectiveness of baking soda, dry the mattress outside and leave it in the sun. Make sure you check the weather forecast to make sure it doesn't rain and the mattress becomes damp overnight
Step 3. Let the baking soda sit for 24 hours
Let the baking soda do the work. Keep other people away from the bed so the work area is not cluttered or disturbed. Ask family members to sleep elsewhere for the night so the baking soda can stay overnight and work to its full potential.
Part 3 of 3: Removing Leftover Baking Soda
Step 1. Install the pillow or sheet special nozzle on the vacuum cleaner
These nozzles are strong enough to lift the remaining baking soda, without damaging the surface of the mattress.
You can also use a hand vacuum cleaner with a smaller nozzle or head
Step 2. Remove the baking soda from the mattress using a vacuum cleaner
Make sure you aim the nozzle at the seams and crevices of the mattress so that all the baking soda is removed.
Step 3. Turn the mattress over and repeat the cleaning process
After cleaning the top, turn the mattress over and clean the underside. Sprinkle 200-620 grams of baking soda and dry in the sun for 24 hours. Remove any remaining baking soda after the mattress is thoroughly cleaned.
Step 4. Clean the bedding with baking soda 1-2 times a year
Get into the habit of cleaning the bed with baking soda so that the mattress is always clean and fresh. Perform cleaning at the beginning and end of the year so that dirt and dust do not accumulate on the surface of the mattress.
