Hair masks are one of the best remedies for hydrating and strengthening hair! To maximize its benefits, masks must be used properly. For example, your hair should be semi-dry when the mask is applied, and make sure the mask is applied evenly from roots to ends. After that, leave the mask according to its type and the goal you want to achieve. Feel free to experiment to find the right amount and type of mask for your hair type.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using Masks Correctly
Step 1. Read the instructions on the mask pack carefully
Generally, mask products sold in the market are equipped with instructions for use on the back of the packaging. For example, some types of masks should only be used once a week, and/or left on for a specific duration. Remember, not all types of masks can be used interchangeably with other products, and generally there are rules regarding the duration and frequency of using masks that you must obey. Therefore, always read the instructions for use listed on the mask packaging before using it. If the mask has a negative impact or doesn't live up to your expectations, it's likely that you missed some instructions for use.
Step 2. Put on an old T-shirt before applying the mask
Be careful, the mask can splatter and dirty your clothes. To avoid this risk, try wearing an old t-shirt, a special salon robe, or another object that you can easily clean or no longer wear afterward.
- For example, try wrapping the body with a towel when applying a hair mask.
- If possible, try to buy a special robe that is generally used to protect the body from falling hair at the salon.
Step 3. Wash and dry hair with a towel
Before using the mask, wash as usual. After that, pat your hair dry using a towel until the moisture content is reduced. Since hair must be in a semi-dry state when the mask is applied, don't dry your hair with a special blow dryer!
Step 4. Divide the hair into sections
In fact, the mask will be easier to apply to hair that is not too thick. Therefore, try dividing your hair into three to four sections. For example, divide your hair into four sections: one on the right, one on the left, one on the front, and one on the back of the head. After that, secure the four sections by wearing tongs or hair tie, and apply the mask to each section gradually.
- The longer and thicker your hair, the more it will be divided. For example, you may need to divide your hair into 4-8 sections.
- This method can be omitted if your hair is very short.
Step 5. Apply the mask from root to tip of hair
First, massage the mask into the scalp, then apply it to the hair shaft to the ends. Try to distribute the mask as evenly as possible throughout your hair and scalp using gentle massaging movements.
Pay more attention to the ends of your hair! Remember, the ends of the hair are more prone to dryness and therefore require extra care
Step 6. Comb your hair
After applying the mask to all sections of your hair, smooth the mask by combing your hair with a medium-toothed or wide-toothed comb. Do not skip this method so that the mask can be distributed better throughout the hair.
Unfortunately, this method is not suitable for all hair types. If you have curly hair, for example, try combing your hair with your fingers instead of a comb, or skip this step
Step 7. Rinse off the mask and apply conditioner
After leaving the mask on for the desired time, rinse it off immediately. After that, apply conditioner as usual to moisturize your hair.
Method 2 of 2: Maximizing the Benefits of the Mask
Step 1. Wrap your hair with a shower cap and hot towel after using the mask
First of all, put on a shower cap first. After that, wrap around the shower cap with a hot towel, and let it sit for 10 minutes. By doing so, the mask can adhere more perfectly to the scalp so that its effectiveness will increase.
Step 2. Adjust the time of wearing the mask with the purpose
If using a mask product that is sold in the market, follow the instructions for use listed on the mask packaging. However, if you use a home mask product, make sure you adjust the time of using the mask with the goal you want to achieve.
- To increase the protein content in your hair, leave the mask on for 10 minutes.
- To moisturize your hair, leave the mask on for five to 10 minutes.
- The oil head mask should be left on for at least 30 minutes.
- The olaplex mask should be left on for at least 10 minutes, but the benefits will be more pronounced the longer it is left on. If possible, wear an olaplex mask for 30 minutes or more.
Step 3. Go to bed wearing a mask if your hair texture is very dry
Apply these tips if you're trying to fix overly dry hair. After using the mask, cover your hair with a towel, shower cap, or other head covering, then go to sleep as usual. In the morning, rinse the mask thoroughly. After that, your hair should feel much softer and moisturized.
Step 4. Reduce the amount of mask you use if your hair looks oily
Supposedly, the hair will not look too oily after applying the mask. If the situation is the other way around, it means you are applying too much product to your hair. Next time, try reducing the amount of product you use, and observe the effect.
