The microphone and camera can be hidden in any place to spy on unsuspecting people. Recording without permission is illegal, but that doesn't mean you're safe from recording. If you think you are being recorded, perform a physical examination and use existing technology to detect hidden microphones and cameras.

Method 1 of 2: Performing a Physical Search
Step 1. Listen for a low hum or clicking sound to detect the recording device
Hidden cameras are designed to be less visible, but many devices still make a low sound when they're working. When the room you suspect is quiet, walk slowly to look for any buzzing or soft clicking sounds that might be coming from a hidden camera.
- Try doing a search in the room in the early hours of the morning to quieten the surrounding noise. This makes isolating and searching for voices much easier.
- There are a variety of mechanical and electrical devices that can produce a quiet clicking and buzzing sound. Combine this method with other ways to identify hidden microphones and cameras so you can differentiate between dangerous objects and ordinary devices.
Step 2. Investigate smoke detectors and other electronics
Surveillance devices can be hidden inside other devices that require electricity, such as smoke detectors. Lower the detector from the ceiling and look for a camera or microphone inside. Check speakers, lights, and other electronics for signs of interference that might indicate an additional microphone.
- A smoke detector is an ideal place to hide a microphone because it is self-powered and is usually placed in the center of a room.
- Cameras or microphones hidden inside smoke detectors or other electronic devices are usually easy to see. Look for anything that doesn't appear attached to the device, or anything that looks like a camera or microphone.
Step 3. Look for decorations that look odd and out of place
One common way to hide a camera or microphone is to place it inside an inconspicuous object, such as a flower vase or teddy bear. Check for decorations throughout the room that look inappropriate for the room, or are positioned oddly.
- While most cameras can be hidden within other objects, the lens must be visible for the camera to function. Check suspicious decorations for surfaces that look like glass or lenses that might indicate a hidden camera.
- To be effective, the camera will be positioned so that it can see as much of the room as possible. Look for decorations that are placed at the edge of the room at an odd angle so that they can lead into the room.
- A hidden microphone works best if it is placed in the center of the room so that you can hear all sounds evenly. Look for decorations placed on the table in the middle of the room to find the microphone.
Step 4. Look for odd wires that don't lead anywhere
While some short-range surveillance devices run on battery power, most microphones and hidden cameras require electrical power. Check electrical outlets for wires leading to something that doesn't actually require power, or wires you don't know about.
If you find an unknown cable and do not know its use, immediately unplug it from the wall outlet
Step 5. Make a hidden camera detector to find hidden devices
The hidden camera detector can make it easier for you to detect pinhole cameras hidden in walls or objects. Place a circular cardboard roll of tissue in one eye, then place the flashlight in the other eye. Turn off all the lights, turn on the flashlight, and slowly look around the room for small, faint lights.
- The light will be emitted from the device or lens attached to the camera so you can observe it easily.
- Once the spot of light is known, move closer to the object to check if it is a camera. Some objects that reflect light will emit a faint glow even if they are not hidden cameras.
- Some cameras also have a small LED light that activates in the dark. You can see it easily through the hidden camera detector.
Step 6. Pay attention to the light fittings and battery in the vehicle
The microphone and camera can be hidden in the car to track and record you. Inspect the inside of the light fixture and around the vehicle battery for any unknown wires or devices. Look under the car using a flashlight to check for anything that looks stuck to the vehicle, but is not part of the car.
- It's rare for a wire to come out of the contact point on the battery. Investigate any odd wires carefully, and try not to touch the battery.
- The only device that should be in the fitting is the light bulb. It's also a good idea to look inside and around the bulb to see if there's anything inside.
- All of the methods for detecting microphones and cameras at home can also be applied to cars.
Step 7. Check for the presence of a two-way mirror using a flashlight
A two-way mirror is a mirror on one side and a window on the other so it is perfect for placing the camera. If you suspect a two-way mirror, turn off all lights and point the flashlight at the mirror. If it's a two-way mirror, you can see the room on the other side.
- Try lifting the mirror off the wall. Two-way mirrors must be mounted or bolted to the wall, while regular mirrors are only hung using hooks.
- Another method to find out a two-way mirror is to tap on it. Regular mirrors make a flat, quiet sound, whereas two-way mirrors sound sharper, exposed, or hollow because of the space behind them.
- If you suspect a two-way mirror, the easiest way to fix it is to cover the mirror with a sheet of cloth, paper, or hang another mirror over it.
Method 2 of 2: Finding the Presence of an Electrical Signal
Step 1. Scan the area with an RF detector
RF detectors can be used to scan radio frequencies used to transmit signals to microphones and hidden cameras. You can buy an RF detector online or at an electronics store. Move the detector around the area where the eavesdropper is suspected. The detector will make a slow "tit" or crackle when it is pointed at an object that emits radio frequency.
- For the RF detector to work properly, turn off any other devices that are also emitting radio signals.
- Read the manufacturer's instructions for detailed information on how to use your detector.
- When the RF detector beeps or crackles, check the area for hidden surveillance devices.
Step 2. Listen for interruptions when you make a call
Many microphones and hidden cameras generate small electromagnetic fields when transmitting data. Make phone calls and walk around the room talking. If you hear a crackling, clicking, or buzzing sound on your phone, this may be a sign that you've entered a hidden device surveillance area.
- Move your phone around the area where you suspect the hidden microphone and camera may be to find its exact location. The buzzing, clicking, and rattling sounds will get louder as the phone gets closer to the device.
- Various devices, such as loudspeakers, televisions, or radios also produce small electromagnetic fields. Turn off the device when you are trying to find hidden devices.
- You can perform the same check using an AM/FM radio. Place the radio where you suspect a microphone may be, then turn the dial. Listen for any strange glitches or static.
Step 3. Look for infrared light using a digital camera or smartphone
Most smartphones and digital cameras can recognize infrared light (which is used by hidden cameras) that the human eye cannot see. Move the camera to scan the room and look through the display screen for flashes or light sources, which may be coming from hidden cameras.
To see if the camera can recognize infrared light, point the television remote at the camera and press any key. You will see a flash of light at the end of the television remote. It is infrared light
Step 4. Look for any strange Wi-Fi signal on your computer or phone
Some microphones and cameras send data over the internet so it can be accessed from anywhere. Therefore, the device will also have a Wi-Fi signal. Look for Wi-Fi signals picked up by laptops or cell phones, and look for signals that look strange and suspicious.
- The default Wi-Fi name for most hidden cameras is usually taken from the product code. Take note of the suspicious Wi-Fi name and do an internet search for the type of device.
- In addition to the unusual Wi-Fi name, look for a strong Wi-Fi signal as well. A strong signal usually indicates that a device is nearby.
- If you can access the wireless router, you can log in and see what devices are connected to the network. Get rid of access to unknown devices to maintain network security.
Tips
- Contact the authorities if you find a hidden surveillance device that can record images and sound without your permission.
- Do not touch or interfere with any hidden devices found until you contact the authorities.
- Some apps claim to be able to detect hidden microphones and cameras. However, most of the apps are not free and the reviews are bad, which means they don't perform very well.
- Hidden cameras usually have a dark color to disguise them from the surroundings. This device may have a light on the front or side to indicate that the device is on. But this tool always has a camera lens made of glass or plastic on the front.
- Hidden microphones are usually small in black color that can be tucked into a small area. Look for cables coming out of the device, either leading to something else or acting as an antenna. You may find a small hole in the center of the case to allow the microphone to record more easily.
