Do you enjoy using hairspray to add texture, but can't use it often due to allergies? Over-the-counter hair sprays are effective, but they usually contain a lot of chemicals that can damage your hair and cause allergies. Luckily, you can make your own hairspray mixture at home using a few simple ingredients. Once you know the basic manufacturing process, you can modify the mixture to your liking with different oils and scents.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making a Hair Spray Mix from Salt
Step 1. Bring 240 ml of water to a boil in a saucepan
If possible, use filtered or distilled water. Tap water usually contains too many chemicals and minerals which can lead to a buildup of material or dirt on your hair over time. (240 milliliters) Heating water makes the salt dissolve faster.
Step 2. Add 1 tablespoon of sea salt
You can also use Epsom salt if you prefer.
Step 3. Add coconut oil
Stir in solid coconut oil until dissolved. Coconut oil is the most moisturizing option for hair, but it is solid when stored at room temperature. You may need to warm the mixture under hot water each time you use it. If this bothers you, replace coconut oil with argan or olive oil.
- If you have oily hair, reduce the amount of coconut oil to 1 teaspoon (5 ml).
- If you have dry hair, use an additional 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml).
Step 4. Remove the pan from the stove
Allow the mixture to cool down before you add 4-5 drops of your favorite essential oil. You don't need to add essential oils if you want to make an unscented mixture. To increase hair holding power, add 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml) of hair gel. This kind of gel is suitable for people who have curly hair.
Step 5. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle
Attach the funnel to the neck of the bottle. Hold the bottle firmly and carefully pour the mixture into the bottle. If possible, use a glass spray bottle. According to some, oil (both coconut and essential oils) and plastic degrades over time.
Step 6. Close the bottle tightly and shake the mixture before use
By shaking the mixture, all the ingredients will be evenly mixed. Over time, the oil will separate from the other ingredients, so you'll need to shake the mixture before using it. If you use coconut oil, the separation of the ingredients will be more pronounced and you will need to soak the bottle under hot running water for a few seconds before using the mixture.
Method 2 of 3: Making Hair Spray Mix from Sugar
Step 1. Fill the pot with 240 ml of water
After that, boil the water. By boiling the water, the sugar will dissolve more easily. Also, use distilled or filtered water if possible. Regular tap water contains minerals and chemicals that cause the buildup of dirt or deposits on the hair.
Step 2. Add 2-4 teaspoons (10-20 grams) of sugar and stir until dissolved
The more sugar you add, the stronger the holding power of your mixture will be. For added holding power, add 2 teaspoons (10 grams) of sea salt.
Step 3. Remove the pan from the stove
Let the mixture cool before you add 8 drops of your favorite essential oil. You don't have to add essential oils, but they will give a subtle scent when the mixture is applied to your hair. You can use any essential oil you like, but for hairspray blends, citrus and lavender essential oils are the more popular options.
Step 4. Carefully pour the mixture into the spray bottle
Attach the funnel to the neck of the bottle. Hold the bottle firmly and carefully pour the mixture into it. If possible, use a glass spray bottle, especially if you are adding essential oils. According to some, essential oils can gradually degrade the quality of plastic.
The softer the spray from the bottle, the more effective the mixture will be on your hair
Step 5. Close the bottle tightly
Shake the bottle before use. At first, the mixture may hold the hair "too strong" in shape. However, let the mixture sit and dry on your hair. If it doesn't feel strong enough, wait 20-30 seconds before re-spraying the mixture.
Method 3 of 3: Creating Another Type of Spray
Step 1. Use water and lemon juice to make a hair color lightening spray
Combine 480 ml of water, 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of almond oil, 10 drops of chamomile essential oil, and lemon juice (from 2 lemons) in a spray bottle. Cover and shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients. Spray the mixture on both dry and wet hair several times a week.
- Lemon juice and chamomile essential oil help lighten hair color. Meanwhile, almond oil functions to condition the hair.
- If you have dark hair, try using orange juice. Orange juice will not lighten hair as much as lemon juice.
Step 2. Make a softening spray against dry, unruly hair
Fill the spray bottle with 240 ml of water. Add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of aloe vera juice, rose water and vegetable glycerol each. Close and shake the bottle before use. Spray the mixture on areas of hair that are unruly and need to be softened.
- Aloe vera juice locks in moisture in the hair and makes it shiny. Meanwhile, rose water serves to soften the hair.
- To increase the holding power of the mixture, use aloe vera gel.
Step 3. Make a straightening or blowing spray
This spray is useful if you have thin, easily damaged, or coarse hair. Fill the spray bottle with 480 ml of water. Add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of melted coconut oil and 5 drops of rosemary essential oil. Cover and shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients. Spray the mixture on wet hair after you shower.
- Coconut oil works to moisturize the hair. Meanwhile, rosmarin essential oil can strengthen every strand of hair.
- You can also use this mixture on dry hair. This mixture is suitable for damaged hair types.
Step 4. Make a light holding hair spray using lemon and essential oils
Cut the lemon into several slices and boil it in 480 ml of water. When the water volume is reduced by half, strain the mixture into a spray bottle and let it cool. In a separate bowl, mix 6-8 drops of essential oil with 2-3 tablespoons (30-45 ml) of vodka, then add to the lemon water mixture. Cover and shake the bottle to mix the ingredients.
- Use orange if you have dark hair. It is possible that lemon can lighten hair color.
- You can use any essential oil. Lavender oil is the most commonly used option.
Step 5. Make a tangle-free hair spray
Prepare water and hair conditioner. Fill 2/3 of the spray bottle with warm water. Fill the bottle with your favorite hair conditioner. Close the cap and shake the bottle vigorously to mix the two ingredients. Spray the mixture on your hair for easy combing. You can use this mixture on wet or dry hair.
Tips
- You can find essential oils at health food grocery stores and some arts and crafts stores.
- Experiment with different doses to get more holding power.
- Use another essential oil to get the fragrance you want. You can even mix in some oils to create a new fragrance.
- Use a glass spray bottle instead of a plastic spray bottle. Essential oils can gradually damage or reduce the quality of plastic bottles.
- If you need to use more of the mixture, let the first coat dry before you re-spray the mixture on your hair.
Warning
- Homemade hairsprays don't always have the same strong hold on your hair as commercial hairsprays. This product is perfect for adding texture to hair.
- This hair spray mixture is natural so it can rot. Throw away the mixture immediately if it starts to smell or looks weird.
