Have you ever dreamed about the ocean and swimming with fish wings? Do you have a voice that can lure sailors to death? Is your greatest happiness swimming? If you want to bring out this unique side of yourself at school, do your research, customize your appearance, and act like a mermaid.
Step
Part 1 of 5: Doing Research
Step 1. Decide what type of mermaid you want to appear
There are many types of mermaids in fairy tales and folklore, with very romantic or dangerous traits. Are you the type of mermaid who falls in love with sailors, or the type who wants to drown them? Is fish your friend or food source? After deciding, you will be able to play the mermaid easily and make others believe.
Step 2. Read the story about the mermaid
Start with ancient myths. The myth of mermaids exists in all cultures around the world, from Russia to Greece. Then, the myth is processed into fairy tales and fiction.
- Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid is widely regarded as the pioneer of mermaid fairy tales.
- In addition to Andersen, read Oscar Wilde's The Fisherman and His Soul, H. P. Lovecraft's, Donna Jo Napoli's Sirena, and Alice Hoffman's Aquamarine.
Step 3. Watch movies and TV shows about mermaids
Get started with Disney's version of The Little Mermaid. This is the most famous version of Andersen's story, and you must be familiar with the film if you want to be accepted as a mermaid.
- Splash is a film that has difficulty transforming into a mermaid every time it hits water so it's a good movie for reference.
- Another option is Aquamarine.
- Consider Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and She Creature.
- Mermaids aren't shown much on television, but the Australian film series H2O: Just Add Water features three young mermaids in High School trying to keep their magical powers a secret.
Part 2 of 5: Dress like a Mermaid
Step 1. Lengthen the hair
Mermaids are famous for having beautiful long hair. Consider hair extensions. Extensions are available in many colors and will add a dramatic blue or purple shine to your hair for a magical look. However, make sure you don't break the school's rules about hair.
- Treat your hair by shampooing at least three to four times a week. Brush every morning and night because mermaids love to brush their hair. Also, brushing your hair is good for your scalp and makes your hair healthier.
-
If your hair isn't soft, try using a few different shampoos to get the results you want. In addition, conditioner can help soften and strengthen hair if used in the right amount.
Try buying tropical scented shampoos and conditioners that will remind people of the ocean
Step 2. Wear appropriate accessories
Start with a hairpin in the shape of a sea creature. The most popular choices are starfish, dolphins, and seahorses. Look for necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and brooches of the same shape.
-
If you can't find the right accessory, a regular seashell necklace can have the same effect. Always make sure to wear it outside the shirt, not hidden under the shirt so people can see it.
- Try buying a shell necklace that looks real, or is real. If possible, find small shells on the beach to chain. Sometimes there are small holes in the shells (usually small shells) that the chain can still safely pass through without cracking them.
- Do not wear a shell necklace while sleeping as it may break if crushed. Take it off before bed and shower to make it last longer.
Step 3. Use ocean colors
Blue and bright green have always been associated with the sea, as well as sapphire blue or clear blue. However, don't just wear that color, you can add a touch of purple or orange that will give a tropical touch to the appearance. Take a look at photos of life in the ocean, and try to capture some of the colors and patterns that come to life there.
Don't wear a mermaid costume because people will think you're looking for attention or make fun of you. However, feel free to wear a mermaid costume for a Halloween party, as long as you don't overdo it
Step 4. Apply nail polish with marine colors
Blue, green, and purple and go well with clothes and will catch people's attention when you run your fingers through your hair.
Step 5. Adjust the makeup
A little bit of blue on your lips or on the outer corner of your eyes will highlight your overall appearance.
Avoid shimmery colors and glitter, which will attract too much attention and make you look like you're trying too hard. In fact, mermaids are sometimes shy and do not like to attract attention
Part 3 of 5: Act like a Mermaid
Step 1. Show interest when someone talks about the ocean
When the subject of life under the seas and oceans is brought up, show interest and knowledge, as if you were an expert. Talk a little about fish, currents and tides. If there is an aquarium in class, take the opportunity to commemorate or show humiliation.
Be prepared to correct if something is misunderstood, but don't cause any inconvenience
Step 2. Change the topic if there is talk about mermaids
A true mermaid would not be happy if the secrets of her people were discussed by the public. Your silence on this subject will make people more interested. However, you may need to provide subtle hints, such as "The Little Mermaid's portrayal is wrong."
Step 3. Be careful near water
There's no need to run away screaming, but show some nervousness and quickly dry yourself off. If you can walk on two legs, it means you are a mermaid who will change to your original form when exposed to water. So, it's natural that you don't want to transform at school and acting scared near the water will make that impression even more real. If you must come into contact with water, wear a special talisman on a necklace or hair that is not to be removed, and casually say that it prevents transformation. It will be more convincing if your amulet is made of sterling silver. This matter will be explained later.
If no one notices your nervousness when you come into contact with water, don't worry. Over time, surely someone will notice it. However, if you act dramatic, people will think that you are just faking it and/or seeking attention
Step 4. Practice singing skills
Mermaids are famous for their melodious voice. If your voice is already good, raise your voice when you hear the radio in the car or hang out with a voice guide. If not, take a private singing class and in the meantime, show that you're afraid to sing in front of people and let them figure out why.
- Don't sing too much or people will think you're just showing off. Then, they will ignore, avoid, and/or dislike you.
- If you find that your singing skills aren't developing, don't worry. You don't have to sing to be a mermaid. So don't sing and don't say anything about your voice.
Step 5. Get involved in protecting marine life
A true mermaid will be restless with the destruction of her habitat. Join an environmental protection club or pollution awareness campaign. Do your research on the dangers of overfishing and oil spills. If you live on the coast, take part in a beach cleanup project.
Don't go overboard with this activity, then lecture everyone on the importance of preserving the ocean. If you overdo it, people will get irritated and feel that you are just looking for attention
Part 4 of 5: Feel like a Mermaid
Step 1. Record your life as a mermaid in a diary
Write about your experiences of living underwater, transforming, and having trouble keeping secrets. You can keep it or take it to school, and let people guess what's in it.
-
If you want to take it to school, protect it and never leave it out of sight. This will add to the mystery and make people wonder what is in your diary.
If your friends really want to know about it, they'll probably try to pick it up and see what's inside so you should take good care of it, unless it's part of your plan. However, it's not recommended because they might make fun of you and your secret life as a mermaid falls apart
Step 2. Practice visualization
Before going to sleep, imagine yourself as a mermaid in the ocean. Listen to the sound of the waves. Picture yourself surrounded by fish or diving in a coral reef. Feel your body floating on the waves. This exercise will come true in your dreams. Don't be surprised if you wake up feeling like you've just been swimming.
Step 3. Go to the sea
Swim in the ocean whenever you get a chance. Just pretend you're home, and if you feel at home, it'll be easier. You can play in the water as long as possible and hug the water to show your love for the sea. When you have to go home, reluctantly get out of the water, but don't delay too long as that will seem annoying.
- If you live near the beach, feel free to play in the sea anytime. The more time you spend at sea, the more people will suspect that you are actually a mermaid.
-
If you don't live near the beach, play in the pool as often as possible. Don't swim in a pool that is crowded with people, and if the pool you are going to is very crowded, leave immediately. If you have no choice but to swim with someone else, wear a talisman. Choose an amulet made of sterling silver that will not change color or rust.
When alone in the pool, practice swimming like a mermaid. Then, practice your moves on the beach
Part 5 of 5: Adjusting Perspective
Step 1. Don't overdo it
If you give too many hints or act important, people will get irritated. The point is to be a mermaid, not alienate friends. Give subtle hints and costumes that don't go overboard, don't go full effect all the time.
Step 2. Enjoy a double life
If you're getting bored or uncomfortable with this role, you may need to take a break. Remember that pretending to be a mermaid is meant to please yourself. You live in two worlds, but don't make it a burden. Do it while you're happy.
Tips
- When people talk about mermaids, smile like you know a lot. If they insult a mermaid, put on a scowl, look away quickly, and show that you're hurt.
- If you want to explore life as a mermaid, consider visiting Weeki Wachee Springs, the famous mermaid park in Tampa, Florida. There is a special camp for children who want to wear a mermaid tail and learn to swim like a mermaid. You can also watch performances from professional artists who play mermaids.
- If you want people to be suspicious, pretend to "accidentally" leave the mermaid's diary in front of people who might want to read it.
- Try sprinkling salt water on your hair after shampooing. It will make your hair look like it's from the pool or the beach. You can also find saline sprays at stores. If someone asks why your hair is wet, just smile and change the subject.
- If you have your own money, you can buy a mermaid tail. You can't wear the tail to school, but it will help you get into character.
- Have a "mermaid budget" so that purchases of clothes and accessories don't go through a bank account.
- If someone asks you if you're a mermaid, make a face like you're making up an answer, then express frustration and nervousness and say, "Yes."
- Practice swimming skills. No one believes in mermaids who are not good at swimming.
- Be grateful for your natural beauty. Mermaids are always confident, but never arrogant or arrogant. Believe in yourself, but don't feel "better" than anyone else.
- If someone asks if you're a mermaid, laugh and deny it, like "Nope" or "Haha, mermaids are just fairy tales, honey," and toss your hair. Don't deny it too much because people will probably believe that you're not a mermaid.
Warning
- Follow safety procedures in swimming.
- Make sure the mermaid outfit you wear is not against school rules.
