Mermaids are beautiful creatures that live in the sea, known to be good at swimming, adventurous, and have a mystical feel. If you like mermaids or want to act like a mermaid, start by changing your appearance and behavior. By learning how to dress, talk and swim like a mermaid, you will be considered one of the most beautiful creatures that inhabit the underwater world.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Hair and Makeup
Step 1. Extend your hair past your shoulders
Since mermaids are known to have beautiful long hair, you should also grow your hair long. Try to keep your hair past your shoulders, if not more than that.
Step 2. Style your hair until it's wavy like waves
If you remember the mermaids from The Little Mermaid, Splash, or the Starbucks logo, note that mermaids usually have wavy hair because they spend a lot of time underwater. If your hair is straight, try styling it wavy.
You can style your hair as if you just got out of the sea. Try spraying salt water on your hair several times a day
Step 3. Complete the wavy hairstyle with beachy accessories
Use starfish clips or a coral comb, or sprinkle some sand in your hair. Shop for mermaid-themed hair accessories at an accessory store, or look for shells and coral on the beach.
Step 4. Make up with minimal cosmetics and waterproof
Mermaids who live under the sea do not need makeup. So, you have to apply makeup strategically to accentuate your natural beauty without overdoing it. Use waterproof products because you never know when you're going to swim.
- Use blue, green, and purple eye shadow on the outer corner of the eye to enhance the impression of the sea.
- Use a good black mascara that doesn't clump.
- Choose a light blue, purple, or clear lip gloss.
Part 2 of 4: Dress like a Mermaid
Step 1. Buy a mermaid tail
You can order them from many costume vendors on the internet. The tail is the perfect touch for an authentic feel, and makes your swimming style resemble that of a mermaid. If you don't have the funds to buy it, you can still adopt the mermaid behavior with other cheaper accessories.
Step 2. Wear a long flowing shirt and skirt
For everyday wear, choose long clothes that wave with your body movements, and opt for marine colors like blue, green, and purple. This style will remind people of the waves. For starters, try pairing a flowing top with jeans, or a short top with a flowing blue skirt.
Step 3. Wear a bikini top made of seashells at the appropriate time and place
When you're relaxing at the beach or the pool, a seashell bikini top will show you your status as a mermaid. Choose a marine color like blue or purple.
Step 4. Choose casual footwear with open toes
Since mermaids don't wear shoes, you don't need to accentuate your feet. Opt for sandals or water shoes, and if possible, look for footwear with shells or starfish designs.
Step 5. Paint the nails a color that matches the sea
Try a soft pink, light blue, or turquoise. If you want to highlight your nails, try nail polish with a mermaid-themed design, such as starfish, anchors, or scales.
Step 6. Wear jewelry from coral and shells
To be a mermaid, you have to wear the right accessories. Head to an accessory shop and buy supportive knick-knacks, such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets made of coral or shells. You can also make your own shell accessories.
Part 3 of 4: Living in Mermaid Heaven
Step 1. Spend as much time as possible near the water
To live like a mermaid, you need to be in close proximity to the sea often. Since you can't live underwater, try to spend a lot of time near the water.
- If you live near the ocean, enjoy days on the water or at the beach.
- If you don't live near the ocean, try relaxing by a lake, pool, or river.
- If you have time for a vacation, consider going to the beach so you can enjoy more time by the sea.
Step 2. Redecorate the room to make it look like the ocean
Even if you can't live underwater, make your room a mermaid paradise by decorating it with seashells, coral, and pictures of the sea. Paint the walls blue, and put coral, plants, faux seaweed, and anything else around the bed to make you feel like you're living under the sea.
Step 3. Find sea creatures as friends
Being a mermaid in the human world can be lonely at times, and having friends from sea creatures will make your acting even more convincing. You can raise starfish, crabs, or tropical fish.
Step 4. Consider attending a mermaid convention
This special convention is held annually in American cities, such as Greensboro, Las Vegas, and Miami. The convention is a large and regular gathering that brings together “mermaids” to swim, play in the water, watch plays, and make connections in all things mermaids. If you attend the convention, you can experience for yourself what it's like to live in a mermaid paradise and meet others.
Part 4 of 4: Act like a Mermaid
Step 1. Watch a movie about mermaids for inspiration
Try some popular movies and TV shows, such as “The Little Mermaid”, “Aquamarine” and “H2O”. Watch how the mermaid in the film talks and interacts, then try to imitate her behavior in everyday life.
Step 2. Create a mermaid name
A mysterious, nautical name will make your role as a mermaid more convincing. You can find traditional mermaid names and their meanings online, or if you're creative, come up with your own.
Some examples of mermaid names are Nerida (Greek word for mermaid), Viviane (meaning queen of lakes) and Cleodora (daughter of river god in Greek mythology)
Step 3. Show a somewhat confused expression with the world around you
Because they live in the sea, mermaids are not used to life on land. Put on a confused face when you see ordinary things, and try to use everyday items in the wrong places.
- For example, use a fork to comb your hair.
- Mermaids also don't understand technology because there are no computers or televisions under the sea. So instead of a cell phone, use a large clam or a conch to call your fellow mermaids.
Step 4. Walk at a hesitant pace
As a mermaid, you shouldn't be familiar with the function of your feet. Change your gait to appear unsure, and find ways to occasionally trip or fall, of course, safely.
Never harm yourself. Even if you're unsure of your stride, make sure you keep your whole body under control so you don't get injured
Step 5. Sing often
Real mermaids are good at singing beautifully, to themselves and in front of others. Singing is one of the privileges of mermaids. So you should take out those privileges whenever possible.
- If you don't have a natural talent, try practicing singing as often as you can until you feel satisfied.
- Show an expression of longing and melancholy when you sing, and try to think of your life in another world.
Step 6. Improve your swimming skills
True mermaids are very good at swimming, and feel more comfortable in water than on land. Think of swimming as a sport, and take time to improve your underwater fitness.
- Keep your feet together as if you were swimming on one flipper. If you've bought a mermaid tail, you can practice with it.
- Think of the dolphin's movements, and use your abdominal muscles to propel your body forward
- Since mermaids can breathe underwater, practice your breathing, and see if you can dive without air for long periods of time.
Step 7. Take a mermaid class, if available in your area
If you're really serious, take a special class that teaches the art of being a mermaid. Out there, mermaid classes are held in indoor pools, and focus on teaching mermaid swimming techniques, mermaid dancing, and underwater tail techniques. Usually, the class also rents out tails. Although mermaid classes are not essential, training will definitely make your role more convincing.
Tips
- If you don't want to act like a mermaid around other people, practice at home before presenting yourself outside.
- Don't wear a lot of shiny things. Try not to wear plastic or cheap looking clothes and accessories because real mermaids don't wear plastic.
- Learn a lot about the sea, in case someone might ask.
