Tips
- The icing mixture should be easy to apply without damaging the surface of the cake.
- You'll need to taste your frosting first before applying it to the cake.
- Add a little melted chocolate for an even better taste!
- Much of the flavor of your homemade frosting will depend on the taste and quality of the cocoa powder you're using. The Van Houten brand has always been the tastiest, but other brands such as Windmolen, Tulip Bordeaux, Delfi, and Java BT are also favorites.
- If you don't have cocoa powder, you can use powder to make hot chocolate as a good substitute.
- If the frosting is too thick to spread, add a tablespoon or two of milk until the frosting is at your desired thickness.
- If you want to use a spray tube, put the dough in a plastic bag and cut off a bit of the bottom end. Attach the tip for making the frosting to the plastic to make a pattern with the frosting.
- Make sure the flavors of the cake and icing are in sync before serving it to your friends or family, otherwise it will taste awful.
- For the best taste, use butter instead of margarine.
- Baking butter in the oven and then freezing it and reusing it makes it taste even better when spread on cakes.
- You can replace the butter and cocoa powder with melted real chocolate for a very luxurious taste.
