Peanut butter frosting is a creamy topping with a variety of flavors that is quick and easy to make to complement cakes, cupcakes, and brownies. Peanut butter frosting can be made plain, or combined with other ingredients for a different flavor. No matter what type of peanut butter frosting you want to make, all you'll need is a few simple ingredients and an electric mixer.
Ingredients
Peanut Butter Frosting
- 1/2 cup fine butter
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream (as needed)
Peanut Butter and Cream Cheese Frosting
- 1 (28 grams) box of fine cream cheese
- 1⁄2 cups peanut butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3-3 1⁄2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons milk or cream
Peanut Butter and Chocolate Frosting
- 1⁄2 cups Peanut Butter
- 2 tablespoons fine butter
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
- 1 1⁄2 cups powdered sugar
- 1⁄4 cups sifted unsweetened cocoa powder
Step
Method 1 of 3: Peanut Butter Frosting
Step 1. Melt the butter
Beat cup butter with 1 cup peanut butter in a large bowl using an electric mixer. Beat the mixture until it expands.
This process will take about 2 minutes
Step 2. Add powdered sugar
Gradually add 2 cups of powdered sugar to the butter mixture. Sugar is added to the butter mixture while the mixer is running at a slow speed.
- This stirring process will take about 3-5 minutes.
- To slowly add powdered sugar, hold the powdered sugar container over the bowl of the electric mixer, then gently tap the container, so that the powdered sugar drops little by little into the butter mixture.
Step 3. Adjust the frosting consistency
Add about 2-3 tablespoons of milk or cream as needed, depending on the desired consistency.
The more milk or cream you add, the thinner your frosting will be. The less milk or cream you add, the thicker the frosting will be
Method 2 of 3: Peanut Butter and Cream Cheese Frosting
Step 1. Mix cream cheese and butter
Combine 28 grams of fine cream cheese with cup of peanut butter in a large bowl using an electric mixer. Stir all ingredients until soft.
This stirring takes 2-3 minutes
Step 2. Add 3-3 cups of powdered sugar
Gradually add powdered sugar, making sure each addition is well mixed before adding more powdered sugar.
This stirring process will take up to 3-5 minutes
Step 3. Add vanilla
Once the powdered sugar is well mixed, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Mixing the vanilla usually doesn't take long, about 30 seconds.
When you add the vanilla, make sure the electric mixer is stirring. It is recommended that the mixer stir at a constant speed
Step 4. Mix until the frosting is your desired consistency
Once all the ingredients for the frosting are mixed, add 2 tablespoons of milk or cream to change the consistency of the frosting to your liking.
If you want to make low-fat frosting, you can use skim milk or low-fat cream, as well as low-fat cream cheese
Method 3 of 3: Peanut Butter and Chocolate Frosting
Step 1. Melt the butter
Use an electric mixer to combine cup peanut butter, 2 tablespoons butter, and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl. Mix the ingredients together until light and fluffy.
This process takes 2 minutes
Step 2. Add the wet ingredients to the bowl
Mix 1 teaspoon of vanilla with 3 tablespoons of milk until the ingredients are well blended.
Step 3. Add dry ingredients to a bowl
Once the vanilla and milk have been mixed, gradually add 1 cup powdered sugar, and cup cocoa/cocoa powder, stirring at low speed
Dry ingredients may be pulled towards the edges of the bowl, so use a rubber spatula to return the ingredients to the center of the bowl to mix
Step 4. Add milk until it reaches the desired consistency
Add 3-4 tablespoons to the frosting mixture, being careful if you add milk. Milk is only added if the consistency of the ingredients is not to your liking.
