This wikiHow teaches you how to send contact data from one iPhone to another.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using iCloud
Step 1. Open the settings menu on the old iPhone
This menu is indicated by the gray gear icon (⚙️) which is usually displayed on the home screen.
- Both iPhones must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. To connect iPhone to a network, tap the “Wi-Fi” option at the top of the settings menu and slide the “Wi-Fi” slider to the on position (marked by green). After that, select the desired network in the "Choose a network… " list.
- Enter the password if prompted.
Step 2. Touch your Apple ID
Your ID is displayed at the top of the menu and contains your name and photo (if you uploaded one).
- If you are not signed in, tap the “Sign in to (your device)” option, enter your Apple ID and password, then select “Sign In”.
- If you are running an earlier version of iOS, you may not need to follow these steps.
Step 3. Select iCloud
It's in the second part of the menu.
Step 4. Slide the "Contacts" slider to the active position
The slider is at the top of the " APPS USING ICLOUD " section and will turn green when moved to the active position.
Step 5. Swipe the screen and select iCloud Backup
It's under the " APPS USING ICLOUD " section.
If the slider is not green, slide the "iCloud Backup" slider to the on position
Step 6. Touch Back Up Now
After that, your old iPhone contact entries will be copied to iCloud.
Step 7. Open the new iPhone settings menu
This menu is marked with a gray gear icon (⚙️) and is usually located on the home screen.
Step 8. Touch your Apple ID
Your ID is displayed at the top of the menu and contains your name and photo (if you uploaded one).
- If you are not logged in, tap the “Sign in to (your device)” option, enter your Apple ID and password, then select “Sign In”.
- If you are running an earlier version of iOS, you may not need to follow these steps.
Step 9. Select iCloud
It's in the second part of the menu.
Step 10. Slide the "Contacts" slider to the active position

Step 11. Press the Home button
The button is circular and is located on the front of the device, below the screen.
Step 12. Open the contacts menu (“Contacts”)
This menu is marked with a gray icon with a dark gray silhouette and a letter tab on its right side.
Step 13. Swipe down on the screen and hold it
In the center of the screen, slowly slide the screen down and hold until you see the refresh icon rotating above the contact list. After that, remove your finger from the screen. Contacts from your old iPhone are now available on your new iPhone.
Method 2 of 3: Using Backup Files from iTunes
Step 1. Open iTunes on the computer
You can send contact entries from your old iPhone to your new iPhone using iTunes or iCloud. Using iTunes is highly recommended because the process is much faster than creating a backup file to iCloud.
Step 2. Connect the old iPhone to the computer using USB
Your iPhone will then appear in the top row of buttons in the iTunes window.
Step 3. Select iPhone in the iTunes window
After that, the device summary page will appear in the iTunes window.
Step 4. Select "This computer", then click "Back Up Now"
After that, the backup file from your old iPhone will be saved on your computer. Creating the backup file can take a few minutes.
Step 5. Adjust the settings on the new iPhone
After the backup file is created, you can adjust the settings of the new iPhone. Turn on the device and follow the prompts displayed by the Setup Assistant to adjust the device settings. Make sure you're signed in using the same Apple ID as the ID you used on your old iPhone.
Step 6. Select "Backup from iTunes" when you are prompted to restore the backup file to the device
You'll be prompted to connect your new iPhone to your computer so that the iTunes backup file can load.
Step 7. Wait for the file loading process to complete
This process may take a few minutes as files from your computer will need to be copied to your new iPhone. Once the backup file restore process is complete, your new iPhone will load all the contacts stored on the old iPhone.
Method 3 of 3: Sharing Contacts with Others
Step 1. Open the contacts app (“Contacts”) on the iPhone
You can also open the phone app (“Phone”) and select the “Contacts” tab.
Step 2. Select the contact you want to send to the other person
You can send the entry details of any contact that is in the contact list.
Step 3. Select Share Contact
After that, the sharing menu ("Share") will be displayed.
Step 4. Select the app you want to use to share the contact entry
After that, the application will be opened and the selected contact will be inserted in the application. You can send contacts through apps like Messages, Mail, or other messaging apps.
Step 5. Type in the name of the contact you want to send an entry to
The contact will be sent to the recipient in VCF format. If the recipient opens the message via their iPhone, the contact will load as a new entry in their contacts app once they touch the VCF file you sent.
