Iced coffee is a refreshing summer drink, and is perfect for a hot night. Of course, homemade iced coffee tastes better, and there are many different ways to make it. Plus, homemade iced coffee is much cheaper than the iced coffee you buy from a cafe. You can also adjust the taste according to your taste.
Ingredients
Instant Iced Coffee
- tablespoon (15 grams) instant coffee
- 5-6 tablespoons (75-90 ml) hot water
- 1 tablespoon (15 grams) sugar
- Ice (to taste)
- Cream, half-and-half (a mixture of cream and milk), or milk (to taste)
Classic Iced Coffee
- 140 grams of ice
- 250 ml coffee, at room temperature or chilled
- Sugar (to taste)
- Cream, half-and-half (a mixture of cream and milk), or milk (to taste)
Cold Brew Ice Coffee (Cold Brew)
- 40 grams of ground coffee
- 320 ml cold water
- Sugar (to taste)
- Cream, half-and-half (a mixture of cream and milk), or milk (to taste)
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making Instant Coffee
Step 1. Fill a tall glass with instant coffee and sugar
Add sugar with instant coffee because sugar dissolves more easily in hot water than cold water. If you want a less sweet coffee, reduce the amount of sugar.
Step 2. Pour in the hot water
Bring the water to a boil first, then pour it into the coffee and sugar mixture. Keep stirring the mixture until the sugar and coffee have dissolved. Don't worry if the coffee seems too thick or strong. The strength of the taste will decrease after you add ice.
Reduce the amount of water for a stronger coffee, or add more water if you want a lighter coffee
Keep in mind that the coffee will eventually taste lighter after you add the ice.
Step 3. Add some ice cubes and stir
Don't worry if the ice melts. The ice will still melt when added to hot coffee. The ice added at this stage will thin the thick coffee mixture and cool it down.
Step 4. Add the remaining ice
You can add as much or as little ice as you want. Ice will make the coffee taste delicious, cold, and refreshing.
Add a little ice if you want to make iced coffee that isn't too cold. For regular iced coffee, fill the glass with ice until it is almost full. At first, the ice will melt quickly, but the melting process slows down as the coffee begins to cool
Step 5. Add cream, half-and-half, or milk
For a lighter iced coffee, you can also add a little cold water. Stir the coffee again to mix the cream.
Step 6. Enjoy the iced coffee before the ice melts
The longer you wait, the thinner your iced coffee will be.
Method 2 of 3: Making Classic Iced Coffee
Step 1. Brew a cup of coffee
If not, prepare a coffee maker and brew a cup of coffee. Try to make coffee that is strong enough because the added ice will make the coffee runny.
Add sugar at this stage. Sugar dissolves faster in hot drinks than cold drinks
Step 2. Cool the coffee for a while
If you add ice right away, the coffee won't taste cold. Let the coffee cool for a moment. Usually, the room temperature is enough to make iced coffee. If you want the coffee to be colder, wait 15-20 minutes, then put the coffee in the fridge.
Do not immediately put hot coffee in the refrigerator
You could actually break or crack the cup. The hot steam that comes out of the coffee can also raise the temperature of the refrigerator.
Step 3. Fill a tall glass with ice
You can use regular ice cubes, or ice made from frozen coffee. Don't fill the glass with ice so there's still room for the coffee. You can always add more ice later if you think it's not enough.
Step 4. Pour the cold coffee into a glass filled with ice
You can add more ice at this point if you want.
Step 5. Add cream and sugar to taste
If not, add sugar to the coffee at this point. Start with a little cream and a spoonful of sugar first, stir in the coffee, and taste. Add more cream and/or sugar until the coffee tastes just right.
Step 6. Enjoy the iced coffee before the ice melts
The longer you wait, the thinner your iced coffee will be.
Method 3 of 3: Making Cold Brew Iced Coffee
Step 1. Mix ground coffee and water in a glass jar
Stir the coffee until there are no clumps of coffee. You can use a spoon, fork or egg beater. Some people feel that coffee made through the cold brew process has a more bitter taste.
Step 2. Close the jar and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 5 hours
This step is what makes this process called "cold brewing". Coffee is brewed slowly in cold water, not quickly in hot water. Usually, cold brew coffee is less acidic than coffee brewed with hot water.
Do not leave coffee in the refrigerator overnight. It will taste very bitter
Step 3. Fill a tall glass with ice
Make sure you still leave room for the coffee. You can add more ice later if you feel it's not enough.
Step 4. Line the filter with a coffee filter, then place it over the glass
A filter lined with a filter will hold the coffee grounds when the coffee mixture is poured into the glass.
Step 5. Pour the coffee into the glass through a sieve
Squeeze and press the dregs that collect in the colander using the back of a spoon or spatula. This way, you can remove the coffee residue that is in the dregs.
After it finishes, discard the dregs or use it as fertilizer for the garden.
Step 6. Add milk and sugar
Start with a little milk (or cream) and a spoonful of sugar. Stir in coffee and taste. Add more milk or sugar at this stage if necessary.
Make sure you stir the coffee so that the sugar dissolves
Step 7. Enjoy the coffee before the ice melts
As the ice melts, the coffee will become thinner and lighter.
Tips
- Use flavored cream instead of sugar and milk. This creamy product mixes with coffee better.
- To make Vietnamese iced coffee, use 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk instead of milk and sugar.
- Try making large batches of cold brew iced coffee. You need about 250 ml of water for 30 grams of ground coffee. After the dregs are filtered, the iced coffee is preserved for a maximum of 2 days.
- Try freezing coffee in ice molds and using the frozen coffee instead of regular ice. Thus, the coffee will not taste watery and tasteless when the ice melts.
- Use filtered water instead of plain water. Coffee will taste better.
- For a sweeter and softer iced coffee, use coconut milk instead of milk and sugar. Make sure you shake the coconut milk packaging before opening it because coconut milk usually separates from the sediment.
- Sugar does not dissolve easily in cold drinks. Try making sugar syrup and using it to sweeten your iced coffee.
- Add a few drops of vanilla extract to make vanilla iced coffee.
