Plastic bottle "bombs" use a combination of vinegar and baking soda to create small, harmless explosions if used carefully. This bottle "bomb" uses the pressure created by the reaction between vinegar and baking soda to create an explosion, but if you're more interested in a safer (and quieter) alternative, you can also make a small "explosion" using a bottle of diet soda and candy. Mentos. You still have to be very careful because the objects used are explosive and should only be tried with parental supervision.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Mentos and Diet Soda
Step 1. Punch a hole in the Mentos
Take one Mentos candy and make a hole in the middle. Punch holes using nails, pins, pencils, pens, or any tool that can produce holes.
- Use the hammer to tap the object you use to punch the Mentos. Be careful not to injure your hands.
- You can also try tying the Mentos with string or dental floss instead of punching holes in them, but make sure they're tight.
Step 2. Insert the string into the candy
Thread 10 cm of thread or string through the holes on the Mentos. Hold the two ends of the string so that the Mentos are stuck in the middle.
Step 3. Open the bottle of diet soda
Put the Mentos in the mouth of the bottle, but don't let the Mentos touch the soda, then stick the end of the string out the mouth of the bottle.
Step 4. Attach the bottle cap
While holding the strings outside the bottle, close the bottle again so that the strings are held in position due to the tightened bottle cap. Cut the strings sticking out of the cap.
Step 5. Wait for someone to open the bottle cap
When someone opens the bottle cap, the Mentos will fall into the soda and cause the soda to explode. (Be prepared for possible chaos.)
Method 2 of 3: Using Bottles and Tissue or Plastic
Step 1. Make the baking soda container
Tear the tissue paper in half or cut the plastic wrapping into a square about 15X15 cm in size. Take about a tablespoon of baking soda and place it in the center of tissue paper or plastic. Set aside.
Step 2. Add vinegar
Pour the vinegar to a height of 2-3 cm into the bottle. Be careful not to pour too much or the bomb will explode before you're ready.
Step 3. Put the packet of baking soda in the bottle
Grab the baking soda packet by holding the end of the tissue paper or plastic so that the baking soda is in the center. Insert a tissue paper or plastic bag containing baking soda into the mouth of the bottle so that some of the baking soda goes into the mouth of the bottle while the tip sticks out.
Do not let the baking soda fall into the bottle, just in the mouth of the bottle
Step 4. Find a safe place to release the bomb
A suitable place is an open area, away from people, animals, or other property. Remember, you will be throwing the bottle, so there must be enough space for a safe throwing distance.
Step 5. Take the bottle and cap out
Take the bottle to where you will release the bomb. Push the baking soda into the bottle. Close and shake the bottle vigorously. When the bottle feels hard due to the pressure from within, throw the bottle up as far as possible. The bottle should explode when it hits the ground.
Be careful when shaking the bottle as the bottle may explode before being thrown. Make sure you take the proper precautions
Method 3 of 3: Using Plastic Bottles and Bags
Step 1. Open the plastic bag
Place about a tablespoon of baking soda in a plastic bag and hold the bag in one corner of the top so that the baking soda settles on the bottom end of the plastic bag. Cut off some of the top end of the plastic bag and set it aside.
Step 2. Pour in the vinegar
Pour the vinegar to a height of about 2-3 cm into the bottle. Don't pour too much or the bomb will explode before you're ready.
Step 3. Place the plastic bag inside the bottle
Take a plastic bag, making sure the baking soda stays in one corner of the bag. Insert the bottom end of the plastic bag filled with baking soda into the mouth of the bottle. The baking soda should go only as far as the mouth of the bottle and the end of the plastic bag sticking out the mouth of the bottle.
Do not let the plastic bag go all the way into the bottle
Step 4. Find a safe place to release the bomb
A suitable place is an open area, away from people, animals, or other property. Remember, you will be throwing the bottle, so there must be enough space for a safe throwing distance.
Step 5. Bring it out
Take the bottle and cap where you will blow it up. Push the plastic bag into the bottle. Close the bottle, then shake vigorously. When you feel the bottle harden from the pressure from within, throw the bottle up as far as possible. The bottle should explode when it hits the ground.
Be careful when shaking the bottle as it could explode in your hands. Make sure you take precautions
Warning
- Accidents that cause injury can occur when making plastic bombs, do so in a safe area with parental supervision.
- Always ensure a safe distance between you and the bomb when the bomb starts to activate.
- Be careful when shaking the vinegar and baking soda bottles, as they may explode in your hands. Wear protective glasses and gloves.
