On Facebook, "mutual friends" are users who are friends with you and certain strangers, and are not descriptions that you can attach to someone. These descriptions are useful for indicating that certain strangers are also friends with your friends. To add friends from friends, you can use the People you May Know function. Some people require that you have at least one mutual friend before you can send a friend request.

Method 1 of 2: Using People You May Know
Step 1. Open the Facebook app, then log into your account if necessary
You can also use People You May Know from the web version of Facebook
Step 2. Add friends you know in real life
The more friends you add to Facebook, the more people will appear on the People You May Know list. This list is based on the mutual friends you have.
- Search for a person's profile by name, email address, or phone number with the search bar at the top of the screen, then open the profile from the search results.
- Tap or click Add Friend on the profile page of the person you want. Once the person accepts your request, they will be added to your friends list.
- If you don't see the Add Friend button, you must have a mutual friend before you can add the person as a friend. Add more people so you can quickly become mutual friends.
Step 3. Open the People You may Know list
This list shows people who have mutual friends. Each profile that appears will display the number of mutual friends. For example, if a profile shows 15 mutual friends, you have 15 friends in common with that person.
- Android - Tap the Friends button at the top of the screen, then swipe to the People You May Know section.
- iPhone - Tap the Friends button at the bottom of the screen, then swipe to the People You May Know section.
- Computer - Click the Friends button in the blue bar at the top of the page, then select See All. Swipe to show people you might know, based on a list of shared friends.
Step 4. Tap or click the Add Friend button next to a person's profile on the People You May Know screen to send that person a friend request
If your request is accepted, he or she will become your friend, and the list of People You May Know in your account will continue to grow.
Step 5. Look at the mutual friends you have with someone
- Go to the person's profile page. It's a good idea to take this step after you've become friends with the person. That way, you can fully access the friend's list of friends.
- Tap or click the Friends tab to display a list of friends.
- Tap or click the Friends tab to display a list of shared friends.
Method 2 of 2: Adding Friends Together
Step 1. Add mutual friends if you can't add someone as a friend on Facebook
When you visit someone's Facebook profile, you may not be able to click the Add Friends button because that person's privacy settings have been set accordingly. In order for you to be friends with them, you must have at least one friend in common with the person.
Step 2. Tap or click the Friends tab on the person's profile
Most people display their general list of friends so you can add mutual friends.
Step 3. If the person's friend list is publicly accessible, you will see a list of friends
Add one of the person's friends as your friend.
If the Friends tab on their profile doesn't show friends, you should hope that some of your other friends will become friends with them in the future. Find the post the person commented on, then send a friend request to the original sender
Step 4. Once you have at least one mutual friend, send a friend request to the stranger
Step 5. Add friends from your friends list
When you view the friends list of your friends, you will see all your mutual friends at the top. Once your shared friends list is finished, you'll see a list of people you have mutual friends with, sorted by the number of shared friends you have with those people. You can click Add Friend to add these people as friends.
