This wikiHow teaches you how to create a timestamp link in the comments that takes the user to a specific point in a YouTube video.

Method 1 of 2: Using a Mobile Device
Step 1. Open YouTube
Look for a white app with a red YouTube logo. To post comments, you must be logged in to your account.
If you are not logged in yet, tap ⋮, tap SIGN IN, enter your email address and password, then tap SIGN IN return.
Step 2. Open the video
Open the video you want to comment on. You can do this in several ways:
- Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top right of the screen, type in the name of the video, and tap Search.
- Tap a video on the home screen from one of your recent subscriptions.
- Tap the label Subscriptions at the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or the top of the screen (Android) and select the video you want to comment on.
Step 3. Tap the video to pause it (pause), then see the time
The video must pause at the point you want to link. You'll see the timestamp in the lower left corner of the video window in hours:minutes:seconds format.
For example, If you pause a video after one minute and 30 seconds, “1:30” will appear in the lower left corner of the window
Step 4. Scroll down and tap on the “Add a public comment” box
This box is below the list of connected videos just below the video window itself.
Step 5. Type the exact timestamp according to the number in the video window
This way, the link to the point in the video will be linked when posting a comment.
For example, you could type “Hey, what happened at 1:30?” to draw attention to the point of the video
Step 6. Tap on the blue “Post” arrow at the bottom right corner of the comment box
This way your comment will be posted and the timestamp will appear as a blue link.
Method 2 of 2: Using the Desktop
Step 1. Go to the YouTube site
If you are already logged in to your account, the YouTube home page will open,.
If you are not logged in to your YouTube account, click Sign in in the upper right corner of the page, enter your email address and password, then click Sign in return.
Step 2. Open the video
Type the name of the video in the search field at the top of the page and press Enter (or Return), or you can select a video from the Home page.
Step 3. Click the video to pause it, then see the time
You'll see the timestamp in the lower-left corner of the video window, right next to the volume icon. The timestamp will be displayed in hours:minutes:seconds format.
- You can also see the full length of the video to the right of the current timestamp in the format. "current timestamp / video length".
- For example, if you stop a 5 minute video after 2 minutes 30 seconds, the timestamp will appear as "2:30 / 5:00".
Step 4. Scroll down and click the “Add a public comment” box
It's under the video description box, just below the "COMMENTS" heading.
Step 5. Type in the current timestamp that appears on the video
This way, a link to the dot on the video will be created when posting a comment.
For example, you typed “Try checking 2:30” in the comment field
Step 6. Click Comments
It is located below the right of the comment field. Your comment will be posted. The timestamp will automatically turn blue and link to the time you pointed to.
Tips
- You can post multiple timestamps in the comments.
- If you wanted to create a table of contents in the video description box, you would link different segments of the video just like posting timestamps in the comments.
