This wikiHow teaches you how to create a new Minecraft account for Minecraft Java Edition (online). In early 2021, when you sign up for Minecraft, you'll also need to sign up for a Microsoft account. If you already have a Microsoft account (including an account for Xbox), you can create a new Minecraft account by signing in through the Minecraft website. If you don't have a Microsoft account, you can sign up quickly and easily. If you already have a Mojang account, you'll still need to migrate to Microsoft at some point in order to continue playing. However, as of April 2021, the migration has not yet started.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Creating a Microsoft Account for Minecraft
Step 1. Launch a web browser and visit
The Minecraft site will open.
- If you already have a Minecraft account at Mojang, sometime in 2021 you will still have to migrate to Microsoft. However, as of April 2021, the Minecraft migration hasn't started yet. When it's time to migrate, you'll receive a message (along with instructions) on your profile on Minecraft.net and on the launcher.
- If you have an old Minecraft Premium account that hasn't migrated to Mojang, you won't be able to migrate to a Mojang account at this time. However, once your Mojang account has started migrating to Microsoft, you can immediately migrate to a Microsoft account.
Step 2. Click LOG IN in the top right corner
This will bring up the login screen.
Step 3. Click Sign up for free
If you don't have a Microsoft account yet.
Minecraft will migrate from your Mojang account to Microsoft so you can sign up for Minecraft by creating a Microsoft account.
Step 4. Enter your email address (email), then click Next
If you don't have an email address, you can use a phone number by selecting Use a phone number, or select Get a new email address to create an email account in Outlook.com.
Step 5. Create a password, then click Next
This password will be used to sign in with your email address or mobile number.
Step 6. Enter the region and date of birth, then click Next
Once this information is entered, Microsoft will send you a verification code via email (or SMS message if you are using a mobile number).
Step 7. Enter the verification code, then click Next
You can get this 4-digit code in an email or SMS message sent by Microsoft.
Wait a few moments for the code to arrive. Look at the Junk or Spam folder if you don't receive the message after a few minutes have elapsed
Step 8. Prove that you are not a robot by solving puzzles
After that, you will be asked to set up a new Xbox gamertag.
Step 9. Create an Xbox gamertag and avatar
Gamertag is the name you use in the online Xbox community. You can click on the provided name or create your own as you wish. An avatar is an image that appears next to your online gamertag. Browse the provided options using the arrows, then click the desired image.
- Gamertags must not contain derogatory words.
- Try not to use anything too personal in your gamertag, like your full name or address. Choosing something anonymous can help keep you safe when using the internet.
Step 10. Click LET'S GO
You now have a Minecraft account and are logged into Minecraft.net.
If you play Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch, you'll also need to be actively subscribed to an online console service
Method 2 of 3: Sign in with a Microsoft Account (Bedrock Edition)
Step 1. Open Minecraft
Minecraft Bedrock Edition is a version available on consoles, phones, tablets, and Windows 10 apps which is also called "Minecraft for Windows 10."
Step 2. Select the Sign in button
The name of this button varies on each platform. For example, if you play Minecraft on Xbox or iPhone, this button will say Sign In and appears in the lower left corner.
Step 3. Sign in on Xbox, Windows 10, Android, or iPhone/iPad
If you are using another console, skip this step. If not, here's how to get into Minecraft:
- The first time you sign in, you may be asked if you want to save your purchases in your Microsoft account. choose Save to Microsoft Account to do it.
- Enter the email address and password used to sign in to your Microsoft account.
- Select button Let's Play green to start playing Minecraft.

- Open a web browser on your computer, phone, or tablet.
- Visit https://aka.ms/remoteconnect with a web browser.
- Enter the 8-digit code into the bar on the browser then click Next.
- Once the code is received, you will be logged into Minecraft with your account.
Method 3 of 3: Log in to Minecraft Java Edition
Step 1. Open Minecraft Launcher
If you haven't downloaded the launcher yet, you can get it at
Step 2. Click Microsoft Login
It's a large green button at the top of the page.
Another type of account that exists is the Mojang account. You cannot create a new Mojang account to use with Minecraft because Minecraft currently requires a Microsoft account. If you already have a Minecraft account through Mojang, you'll need to migrate to Microsoft in 2021. However, as of June 2021, Minecraft hasn't started migrating accounts yet. When it's migration time, you'll get an email with instructions
Step 3. Enter your Microsoft account email address then click Next
Use the same email you created your account with.
Step 4. Enter the password then click Sign In
Once your password is accepted, you will be logged into Minecraft.
Tips
- If possible, use an email address that's easy to access, but doesn't use often.
- Mojang only asks you to log into the Minecraft client and its website. Don't give out your username or password to anyone else, even if it appears that the email requesting that information is from Mojang.
