Method 1 of 1: Preparing for the Making of Mosaic Art
Step 1. Choose the material you want to use
Fragments of material used in mosaic art are called tessera. Tessera can be glass, stone, porcelain, shells, or whatever you can find. You'll also need to collect any other items you'd like to include as extra decorations.
Step 2. Select the base to paste the mosaic tiles on
Tables, flower pots, bird baths, or stepping stones are some things that can be used as a base.

Step 4. Transfer the design to the base
Place the base on a flat surface and start laying out the tessera. Use a glass or tile cutter to cut it to the desired size. You can also use a hammer to break it. Make sure the pieces are clean of dirt or debris before installing.
Step 5. Mix the cement mixture according to the advice on the package
Apply cement to the base using a cement spoon or trowel. While it's still wet, gently press the mosaic tile into the mortar. Apply tiles starting from one corner of the design and working in order per row. Make sure you leave enough space between each tile for the grout mix. You can also choose to apply the mortar directly to the mosaic tiles, like buttering toast. Apply the mortared piece directly to the base and press to secure the tile in place.
Step 6. Allow the mixture to dry
The time it takes to dry varies, depending on the amount used. So, follow the instructions listed on the packaging. For medium-sized works, the time needed is approximately 24 hours. While the outdoor mosaic must be left for about 72 hours. Clean the mosaic tiles again to remove any remaining mortar that may have melted onto the tile surface.
Step 7. Prepare the grout mixture
Grout comes in a variety of colors and there are dyes you can add to your grout to change the hue. Choose a color that can create an accent for your mosaic. Stir the grout following the instructions on the package.
Step 8. Apply the grout using a cement spoon
Fill in the gaps between the tiles. The grout should slightly cover the mosaic so that the gaps between the tiles are sealed.
Step 9. Let the grout sit for 20 minutes or according to the time suggested on the package
Wipe the mosaic with a clean sponge and warm water. Rinse the sponge regularly as you wipe the grout off the tile surface.
Step 10. Coat the mosaic with varnish
The varnish will coat the tile and protect it from damage, especially for outdoor mosaics that are exposed to temperature fluctuations and adverse weather conditions. The varnish will also provide a glossy finish that will make the color stand out.
