Desperate to buy bait every week? You can make your own small fish trap for use in nearby waters using just a rope and a 2 liter plastic bottle of coke.
You Need
- 2 bottles of soft drink size 2 liters
- Strong rope or fishing line
- Cutting knife (cutter) or a sturdy knife
- Masking tape or super glue
- Bread or breadcrumbs
- Sand, earth, or rock.
Step
Step 1. Cut the bottom of one of the bottles
Cut the bottle into 2 halves, about 5-7.5 cm from the bottom. Remove the bottom of the bottle and leave the bottle cap in place.
Although cutting with a cutter is usually easier, a serrated bread knife can also be used
Step 2. Make 10-15 small holes on the sides of the bottle
These holes will allow water to seep into the trap. Use the tip of a heated knife or nail (heat will melt the plastic), then make several 1cm diameter holes around the center of the bottle.
Step 3. Thread fishing line through the two holes and tie them together to make a handle
Just thread the fishing line through the two holes, then tie the ends together to make a simple handle. This method will make it easier for you to lift the trap.
Step 4. Cut off the top of the other bottle
Cut the bottle at the connection point between the top and the "body". You will get a tube and a conical top of the bottle. Keep the top of the bottle and remove the cap and bottom tube.
Step 5. Insert the top of one of the bottles at the bottom
This section is the entrance for the small fish -- the fish will be led through the opening in the conical top of the bottle, then trapped inside the body of the other bottle.
Step 6. Glue the two halves of the bottle together with tape
You can also punch holes in both halves of the bottle at the same time with a hot nail -- this will allow the plastic to melt and stick together.
Step 7. Slice a loaf of bread and put it in the trap
The bread serves as bait. A piece of bread measuring 2.5 cm is large enough. Sand, soil, or rock can also be added to the trap to help sink it and prevent the trap from floating.
Step 8. Place the trap at the bottom of the shallow water
Small fish tend to swarm in shallow water with calm currents. Minnows can often be seen from the shore, so place your trap in an area full of “prey”.
Gently push the trap into the water until it is completely filled and submerged
Step 9. Come back the next day to pick up your catch
Small fish will fall into the trap, but cannot find their way out through the small opening made from the top of the bottle. Remove the bottom of the trap to remove the minnows, then reattach them to use them.
Tips
Put weight on the trap so the fish don't escape
Warning
- As always, be careful when using sharp objects.
- Beware of small fish bites.
