You may think that cupcakes with sophisticated fillings can only be made by a professional cake maker, when in fact inserting the filling into cupcakes is a simple process and doesn't take much time or effort. In addition, adding filling to cup cakes will leave a pleasant impression on those who taste it. Cupcake fillings don't just surprise those who enjoy them, these small changes can transform the taste of cupcakes into extraordinary ones. As your experience with cupcake filling increases, the more filling creations you can create to enhance the taste of this delicious snack.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Using Triangle Pockets
Step 1. Bake the cup cake and allow it to cool completely
If you add the filling while the cupcakes are still warm, the filling will melt and make the cake mushy. You can make your own cup cakes from scratch or buy ready-made mixes that are sold in packs.
Step 2. Place the syringe in the triangular pouch
Cut the end of the triangular pouch first, then attach the syringe. A small round tipped syringe is perfect for this purpose. If you don't have one, you can use a larger star-shaped size.
Step 3. Add 1-2 tablespoons of your preferred filling
Soft fillings, such as custard, buttercream icing, or whipped cream are best for cup cakes. You can also try jam and jelly, but don't choose a filling that is coarsely chopped as this can clog the syringe.
Step 4. Slide the syringe into the top of the cup cake
Then, push it into the cake to a depth of about 2.5 cm. You don't need to make holes in the cake first.
Step 5. Squeeze the triangular pouch to push the filling into the cupcakes
It depends on the size of the cup cake, but you can put about 1-2 tablespoons of filling in it. If the stuffing starts to overflow out of the hole, stop. That means you have filled the cake's maximum capacity.
Step 6. Apply the icing and decorate the cup cake as desired
Use a triangular bag and a large round or star-shaped syringe to place the buttercream icing on top of the cupcakes. You can also use chocolate ganache. However, icing made of powdered sugar and water is not recommended as it is too runny and will seep into the holes.
Method 2 of 4: Using a Paring Knife
Step 1. Prepare the baked and cooled cup cakes
You can make your own cup cakes from scratch or you can make them with ready-made mixes that are sold in packs. After the cup cake is cooked, let it cool. Otherwise, the filling will melt.
This method is perfect for making meses filled cup cakes
Step 2. Slide the paring knife into the top of the cup cake at a certain angle
Hold the blade of the knife so that the flat side is facing the edge of the cup cake. The knife should form a 45 degree angle with the surface of the cake.
- Don't push the knife too deep. Otherwise, the filling will come out of the bottom of the cake.
- If you don't have a paring knife, you can use a teaspoon.
Step 3. Cut the cup cake into a cone shape
Leave the tip of the knife but in the center of the cup cake. Rotate the cup cake while cutting the top into a circle. Try to make the hole about 2.5 cm wide.
To make a cup cake filled with meses, make a hole about 2.5 cm deep
Step 4. Remove the cone-shaped pieces from the cupcakes
Cut the cone in half, then remove the sharp part. The flat top will later be used to cover the hole.
You can eat the pointy part or save it to make a cake pop
Step 5. Fill the hole with your favorite filling halfway
Fill a plastic bag or plastic triangle with your favorite filling. Cut the end of the plastic and insert the filling into the hole. No need to use a syringe for this step. Butter cream icing, custard, and whipped cream make delicious choices. If you want, you can try regular jam or lemon jam for a more interesting variation.
- Do not fill the hole more than halfway as this will cause the filling to overflow during the next step.
- To make meses filled cup cakes, fill the hole with 1 teaspoon of meses. Try choosing different shapes, sizes, and colors.
Step 6. Close the hole in the cup cake
Attach the top of the cone to its original place on the cupcake. Make sure the smooth part, not the cut part, is facing up. Gently press the cone piece down to close the hole, but not too hard so that the filling doesn't overflow.
Step 7. Decorate the cup cake with icing as desired
You can use a triangular bag and buttercream icing. You can also apply icing made of powdered sugar and water. Chocolate ganache can also be a delicious option.
Method 3 of 4: Using Apple Core
Step 1. Prepare the baked and cooled cup cakes
You can make your own cup cakes from scratch or you can make them with ready-made mixes that are sold in packs. After the cup cake is cooked, let it cool. Otherwise, the filling will melt.
Step 2. Press the apple corer into the center of the cup cake
You can also use a small cocktail spoon (melon scoop). If you are using an apple corer, be careful not to press too deep as this will cause the filling to seep out of the bottom of the cup cake.
Step 3. Rotate apple corer
Try not to shift the position of the tool when you turn it. The edge of the tool will cut the cup cake and create a hole.
Step 4. Pull the apple corer out of the cup cake
You can throw away the pieces of cake that are in the appliance or save them for making cake pops. Or, you can eat it.
Step 5. Fill the cupcakes with your favorite filling
You can fill cup cakes with anything from custard to jam to buttercream icing. If using frosting, you can use a triangular bag to stuff it into the hole. If you are using a more liquid filling, such as custard or jam, use a small teaspoon to scoop it into the hole.
Step 6. Decorate the cup cake
This method is easy to do, but leaves a hole in the top of the cup cake. Use a triangular bag with a large round or star-shaped syringe to place the buttercream icing on top of the cake. It is not recommended to use chocolate ganache and icing made from powdered sugar and water for this method as they are too transparent and will mix with the filling.
Method 4 of 4: Filling Cupcakes Before Baking
Step 1. Preheat the oven and prepare a cup cake tin
Preheat the oven to the recommended temperature for the recipe you selected. Most recipes suggest a temperature of around 177 °C, but yours may vary. Then, place the paper cake bowls in the pan.
This method is recommended for chocolate and jam fillings. Should not be applied to frosting, pudding, or cream fillings
Step 2. Prepare the cup cake batter
You can make cup cake batter from scratch or make it from ready-to-use mixes that are sold in packs. Follow the directions on the recipe carefully.
Step 3. Fill a paper bowl with dough up to one third
You can do this using an ice cream scoop, soup scoop, or tablespoon. Set aside the rest of the dough for later.
Step 4. Add 1 teaspoon of your favorite filling in the center of each cake
Jam or jelly is a good choice for this method. You can also try melted chocolate. It is not recommended to use whipped cream or frosting as they may melt.
This measure is recommended for standard sized cupcakes. If you are making mini cup cakes, add only teaspoon of filling
Step 5. Fill the cake bowl with more dough
Add batter until about or full. Do not fill the bowl to the brim as the cupcakes will overflow.
Step 6. Bake the cup cakes according to the directions on the recipe
Most cup cakes will be done after about 20 minutes, but your recipe may vary. Read the instructions and bake the cake according to the information.
Step 7. Allow the cup cake to cool completely before you apply the frosting
First, let the cake cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then remove the cake from the pan. Continue cooling on a wire rack before applying the frosting. You can apply butter cream icing, chocolate ganache, or regular icing.
Don't apply the frosting while the cake is still warm, as it will melt
Tips
- Make sure the cupcake flavors and filling complement each other. Some flavors, such as chocolate cupcakes and lemon jam won't work.
- If you don't have a triangular bag, use a plastic clip bag that you usually use for sandwiches.
- For a tangy cup cake, try the lemon jam!
- Mix different flavors. Try vanilla frosting for chocolate cupcakes, and chocolate frosting for vanilla cupcakes.
- It doesn't matter if you want to use a different flavored frosting for the filling and decoration on the cake.
