This wikiHow teaches you how to change the chat window wallpaper on WhatsApp to one of the plain color options available on both iPhone and Android devices. Alternatively, you can select an image from the WhatsApp wallpaper library or a photo from the device gallery.

Method 1 of 2: On iPhone
Step 1. Open WhatsApp on iPhone
The WhatsApp icon looks like a white telephone receiver inside a green speech bubble. You can find this icon on the home screen or in the application folder.
Step 2. Tap Settings in the lower right corner of the screen
This button looks like a cog in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. The “Settings” page will open after that.
Step 3. Touch Chats on the “Settings” page
This option appears next to the small WhatsApp icon. The chat preferences page will open after that.
Step 4. Touch Chat Wallpaper
This option is the first option at the top of the “Chats” menu.
Step 5. Choose Solid Colors, Wallpaper Library, or Photos.
A selection page of all the colors you can use as the background of the theme will be displayed.
- Touch " Wallpaper Library ” to select one of the default WhatsApp wallpapers.
- Touch " Photos ” to select a photo from the device gallery.
- To reset the theme to the default wallpaper, touch “ Reset Wallpaper ” at the bottom of the screen.
Step 6. Select the color you want to use
A preview window of the color selected as the chat thread background will be displayed.
Step 7. Touch Set in the lower right corner of the screen
The selection will be confirmed and the theme background will be changed to the selected color.
Method 2 of 2: On Android Device
Step 1. Open WhatsApp on iPhone
The WhatsApp icon looks like a white telephone receiver inside a green speech bubble. You can find this icon on your device's page/app drawer.
Step 2. Touch the button at the top right corner of the screen
You can find this menu in the upper right corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 3. Touch Settings
This option is under the drop-down menu. The “Settings” page will load after that.
Step 4. Touch Chats on the “Settings” page
This option appears next to the small speech bubble icon. The chat preferences page will load afterwards.
Step 5. Touch Wallpaper
You can find it under the "Chat settings" section. The available categories will be displayed in a new pop-up window.
Step 6. Select Solid Color in the pop-up window
A page containing color options that you can set as the background of the theme will be displayed.
- Touch " Gallery ” to select an image from the device gallery.
- Touch " Wallpaper Library ” to select one of the default WhatsApp wallpapers.
- To return the theme to its default settings, touch “ Default ”.
- If you don't want to use an image or color as a chat thread background, select “ No Wallpaper ”.
Step 7. Select a color to preview it
Touch a color to see how it will appear on the chat thread in full screen.
Step 8. Touch SET at the bottom right corner of the screen
The color choice will be confirmed and the theme background will be changed to the selected color.
