Windows 7 and Windows 8 have added a program to perform scanning. This program gives you control to determine the location of the scanned image. Read more below.
Step
Before Starting
Step 1. Make sure the scanner is connected to the computer and turned on
Scanners usually have two wires:
- USB cable to connect the scanner to a USB port on the computer.
- Power cord to connect the scanner to a wall outlet.

Notes:
Some newer scanners rely on a Bluetooth connection and don't require a cable to connect the scanner to a computer, just the same Wi-Fi network.
Step 2. Place the image or document on the scanner, face down
Several small markers on the scanner glass plate make it easier for you to load documents into the scanner.
Step 3. If you have never used a scanner, you will need to install it first

Part 1 of 5: Installing the Scanner
Step 1. Make sure the scanner is compatible with Windows 8
Click here to open the Windows Compatibility Center. Enter the scanner product name, then click Search.
If your scanner is not compatible with Windows 8, you will not be able to use it to scan
Step 2. Make sure the scanner is installed
Move the mouse to the right corner of the screen, then click Settings. Click Change PC Settings. Click PC and devices. If your scanner is installed, you will see its name under Printers.
Step 3. If the scanner is not listed yet, click + Add a device
The process of installing the scanner is the same as installing the printer
Step 4. Locate your scanner in the list, then click on it to install it
Part 2 of 5: Opening Windows Fax and Scan
Step 1. Click the Start button
Step 2. Type "scan"

Part 3 of 5: Scanning Images
Step 1. Start a new scan
Make sure the scanner is connected to the computer, and that the document or image you want to scan is already in the scanner.
Step 2. Click New Scan
Step 3. Set the type of scanned document
In the New Scan window, click the Profile drop-down menu, then click Photo if the scanned photo is a photo. If you are scanning a document, click Documents.
Step 4. Select the image file type
Click the File type drop-down menu, and then click the desired scanned file type.
If you don't know what type of file to use, for higher image quality choose-p.webp" />
Step 5. Click Preview
You will see a preview of the scanned image or document.
- If you want to crop the image, click and drag the corners to define a new crop.
- If the image looks pixelated, increase the number of resolutions in the Resolution (DPI) column.
Step 6. Click Scan
Part 4 of 5: Saving Scanned Images
Step 1. Rename the file
Right-click the scanned image, then click Rename. In the Rename File dialog box, in the New Title field, give the resulting image a descriptive name, and then click OK.
The default name of the scanned image is "Image"
Step 2. Save the file to a new location
Right-click the scanned image, then click Save As. In the Save As dialog box, select the directory you want to use, name the file, and then click Save.
The default storage location for scanned images is "Scanned" in the "Pictures" directory
Part 5 of 5: Sending Scanned Images to Email
Step 1. Send the scanned image to an e-mail program
Right-click the scanned image, click Send to, and then click Mail recipient.
