Shaving is the most efficient, most effective and convenient way to remove chest hair. If you've never shaved your chest before, then you'll need an electric shaver as well as a regular shaver. If you're not sure how to completely shave your chest, you can start with a longer shaver setting and do your preferred level of shaving.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Preparing the Chest for Shaving
Step 1. Shave the chest hair before bathing
You wouldn't use a regular shaver to shave your beard before shaving it with an electric shaver and the same can be assumed for shaving body hair. Start by making the shortest setting on the electric shaver so you can see better so it requires fewer shaving motions when you shave with a regular shaver.
- Make sure you shave with an electric shaver when the skin and coat are completely dry. Wet hair will stick to the chest making it difficult to shave and can also stick to the shaver.
- This shave will be a little messy, but depends on the length of the chest hair. Wearing a towel or shaving in a dry bath can help keep the shaving process neat.
Step 2. Take a warm bath
With the bristles reaching the proper shaving length, take a warm shower. The hot water will soften the chest hair and open the pores and hair follicles, making it easier to shave the chest hair.
Water for bathing should be warm and steamy but not to burn the skin. You don't want to irritate your skin before you start shaving
Step 3. Apply a moisturizing shaving gel, lotion or foam
Shaving products will help lubricate the skin so that the blades of a regular razor can move easily and also minimize irritation from shaving.
You may prefer clear products that feel smooth as opposed to shaving cream that lathers over the contours of your chest making it harder to see what you're doing
Part 2 of 3: Shaving Chest
Step 1. Use a new razor blade
If this is your first shaving of the chest, then you will need to use a new blade which will require fewer shaving motions, so there is less irritation from shaving.
Step 2. Hold the skin tightly
You're likely to get cuts and scrapes on the fleshy part of your chest, so use your bare hands to stretch the skin, giving it a flatter surface for shaving.
Step 3. Shave in short, gentle strokes
You just need to press the blade gently and make short movements. Men's chest hair grows in different directions, so you won't really have the same or different considerations as when shaving facial hair. Regardless of the shaving direction you use, it will be the same or may differ from others, so use the direction that is most comfortable for you.
Step 4. Wash the blade frequently
The shaved chest hair will accumulate on the blade making it less effective for shaving and requiring more movement. To avoid this, wash the blade under running water after each shaving motion.
Step 5. Avoid sensitive parts like nipples
The nipple is the softer, fleshier part of the skin on the chest and you should never shave above this area as it may cause cuts or scrapes.
To avoid the nipple area, you can use the fingers of your empty hand to cover it while stretching the skin as it covers the chest area
Step 6. Reapply shaving gel or foam if necessary
You should try not to go through each section more than twice to help reduce irritation. For best results, reapply shaving product before returning to areas that require a second shaving motion.
Part 3 of 3: Care After Shaving
Step 1. Lower the water temperature
The method is the same as what men do when splashing their face with cold water to close the pores after shaving in the morning, then lowering the temperature of the water before leaving the bathroom will feel soothing and can close the chest pores.
Step 2. Dry the chest with a clean towel
Do not rub the chest area to dry it because it can cause irritation. Instead, use a clean towel to pat the area dry.
Step 3. Apply lotion or moisturizer to the chest
Before wearing clothes, apply lotion or moisturizer according to skin type and let it dry. Friction from the shirt can trigger irritation or even ingrown hairs, but a moisturizer will help reduce this risk.
Step 4. Repeat if necessary
Adding shaving to your bathing routine, once or twice a week, will help keep the chest area smooth and free of short hair that grows after shaving. This will also eliminate the need to use an electric shaver beforehand as you will only be keeping your chest hair short.
Tips
- Always clean the skin of the chest before shaving because the bacteria present in the body can cause lumps and defects in the hair follicles.
- Always use a sharp razor to prevent bumps and irritation from forming.
- Do not press the razor hard.
- It may be very uncomfortable, but pluck the nipple hair with tweezers, and don't try to shave too close to the nipple.
