This wikiHow teaches you how to evolve Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon across different generations of Pokémon. While some of the criteria for evolving an Eevee differ across game generations, typically this process involves increasing the Eevee's Friendship level as you practice, and ultimately evolving it at the right time (day or night).
Step
Step 1. Know the game generation you have
Espeon and Umbreon don't exist in Generation I Pokémon yet:
- Generation II - Gold, Silver, Crystal
- Generation III - Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen
- Generation IV - Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver
- Generation V - Black, White, Black 2, White 2
- Generation VI - X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire
- Generation VII - Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon
Method 1 of 5: Generation VII
Step 1. Catch Eevee using the Friend Ball
If you don't have an Eevee yet, catch it on Route 4 or Route 6; You need to use the Friend Ball so that the friendship level of the captured Eevee increases drastically. Thus, Eevee can evolve into Espeon or Umbreon more quickly.
You can also use Luxury Balls to increase Eevee's Friendship growth
Step 2. Raise Eevee's friendship level
Whether you're converting Eevee to Umbreon or Espeon, its Friendship level needs to be maximized first (no Affection level) before evolving. There are several ways to do this:
- Take Eevee for a massage at Konikoni City (once a day)
- Give Eevee berries that increase Friendship levels (these berries include Grepa, Hondew, Kelpsy, Pomeg, Qualot, and Tamato)
- Buy Friendship Combo from Friendship Cafe or Friendship Parlor
Step 3. Make sure Eevee's friendship level is high enough
You can do this by taking Eevee to Konikoni City and talking to the woman near the TM shop. If he comments "My! It feels incredibly close to you! Nothing makes it happier than being with you !" against your Eevee, please proceed to the next step.
If he says anything else, continue to level up your Friendship Eevee
Step 4. Practice Eevee at the right time
Eevee turns into Umbreon if trained at night, while if trained during the day it will evolve into Espeon. The time varies depending on your Pokémon game:
- Sun and Ultra Sun - Daytime runs between 6:00 AM (6.00) and 4:59 PM (16.59) on 3DS, while evening lasts from 5:00 PM (17:00) to 5:59 AM (5.59) on 3DS.
- Moon and Ultra Moon - Daytime runs between 6:00 PM (18:00) and 4:59 AM (4.59) on 3DS, while evenings last from 5:00 AM (5.00) and 5:59 PM (17.59) on your 3DS.
Step 5. Avoid activities that reduce Friendship
There are various things that can lower Eevee's Friendship level:
- Lose the fight
- Using Energy Powder, Heal Powder, Energy Root, or Revival herbs
Step 6. Wait for the right time
Once you're ready to level up your Eevee to turn it into an Espeon or Umbreon, you'll need to wait until day or night falls:
- Sun and Ultra Sun - Morning takes place between 6:00 AM (6.00) and 9:59 PM (21.59) on 3DS, while evening falls from 6:00 PM (18.00) to 5:59 AM (5.59) on 3DS.
- Moon and Ultra Moon - Morning takes place between 6:00 PM (18.00) and 9:59 AM (9.59) on 3DS, while evening runs from 6:00 AM (6.00) to 5:59 PM (17.59) on 3DS.
Step 7. Level up Eevee
The easiest way to do this is to use Rare Candy from the bag on the Eevee you want to level up; When Eevee's experience bar is nearly full, you also level it up through combat. Eevee will change to the desired Pokémon depending on the time of day.
Make sure you're not near Mossy Rocks or Ice Rocks so you don't accidentally turn Eevee into Leafeon or Glaceon
Method 2 of 5: Generation VI
Step 1. Catch Eevee using the Luxury Ball
Generation VI is the first Generation to allow you to catch wild Eevee so use Luxury Balls to maximize Friendship upgrades. Luxury Balls will grant additional Friendship points to captured Eevee either through walking together or while leveling up.
Step 2. Perform Friendship-boosting activities in the area where you caught the Eevee
You can earn some extra Friendship points by doing Friendship-boosting activities in the area where Eevee was captured. These activities include providing Vitamins, Rare Soda, and EV-lowering berries.
Step 3. Walk while carrying Eevee in the party/group
You will earn 2 Friendship points for every 128 steps you take, but not every time.
Step 4. Take Eevee for a massage
Massage gives Eevee a 6% chance to earn 30 Friendship points.
- In X and Y, find the masseuse in the house to the left of the Pokémon Center in Cyllage City.
- On Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, find a massage therapist north of the Poké Miles shop in Mauville City
Step 5. Bound Vitamins to Eevee
Vitamins will increase Friendship Eevee along with the benefits of these vitamins. The following items will increase Eevee's Friendship level by several points:
- HP Up
- Protein
- Iron
- Calcium
- Carbos
- PP Up
- Rare Candy
- Zinc
- PP Max
Step 6. Use Wings to increase Friendship quickly
You can find Wings randomly on Driftveil Drawbridge and Marvelous Bridge. These items will give Friendship Eevee a 3-point increase.
Step 7. Level up Eevee through combat
You will earn 5 Friendship points each time Eevee level up after a fight. Rare Candy no longer gives Friendship increases when used to level up.
Step 8. Take Eevee for Super Training
Complete several courses in Super Training to unlock Soothing Bag. Each time you train with this bag, Eevee will earn 20 Friendship points.
Step 9. Give the Juice (juice) to drink Eevee
Some juices that can be purchased at the Juice Shoppe can increase Eevee's Friendship level. Here are some of these drinks:
- Rare Soda
- Colorful Shakes
- Ultra Rare Soda
- All colored juices
Step 10. Try not to lose Eevee in the fight
If Eevee loses, he will lose 1 Friendship point. Replace Eevee with another Pokémon if it looks like it's on the verge of losing. Also don't use healing items because it will drastically reduce Friendship.
Step 11. Avoid healing items
Healing items have a negative impact on Friendship Pokémon. Try not to use these items on Eevee to evolve, and only heal Pokémon through the Pokémon Center. The second value from the list below is the number of points lost if your Friendship points exceed 200.
- Energy Powder: -5/-10 points
- Heal Powder: -5/-10 points
- Energy Root: -10/-15 points
- Herb Revival: -15/-20 points
Step 12. Check your current Friendship level
Make Eevee the main Pokémon in the group, and talk to the Friendship checker at the Pokémon Fan Club in Laverre City. If you play Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, check out our Generation II guide to check Eevee's Friendship level.
- 50 - 99: " Hmm…I think you have a lot of time ahead of you to get to know one another better."
- 100 - 149: " It's a little bit friendly to you… Something like that."
- 150 - 199: "Well, I think you and Pichu will be an even greater combo someday !"
- 200 - 254: " You must really like your Pichu and always keep it by your side !"
- 255: " It's amazingly friendly toward you! It must be so happy spending every day with you !"
Step 13. Level up Eevee during the day (Espeon) or at night (Umbreon) once Friendship level is above 220
Once an Eevee's Friendship level seems to be above 220, level it up during the day to evolve it into an Espeon, or at night to turn it into an Umbreon. Make sure you're not in the same area as the Mossy Rock or Ice Rock so Eevee doesn't accidentally turn into Leafeon or Glaceon. If Eevee doesn't change when leveling up, it means the Pokémon's Friendship level hasn't reached 220 yet.
Daytime is 4:00 AM (4.00) - 5:59 PM (17.59) and nighttime is 6:00 PM (18.00) - 3:59 AM (3.59)
Method 3 of 5: Generations IV and V
If you play HeartGold or SoulSilver, follow the Generation II Friendship rules.
Step 1. Give the Soothe Bell for Eevee to hold
You need to raise the Eevee's Friendship level to 220 or above in order to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon. Soothe Bell will greatly help speed up this process because it provides an additional 50% of the points earned from Friendship activities.
You can get Soothe Bell from Pokémon Mansion (Diamond and Pearl), Eterna Forest (Platinum), National Park (HeartGold and SoulSilver), or Nimbasa City in Black, White, Black 2, and White 2
Step 2. Walk around while Eevee is in the party/group
You will earn 1 Friendship point for every 256 steps you take with Eevee.
Step 3. Take Eevee for a massage
There are several places where Eevee can be massaged, depending on the game being played. You can use massage as much as once per 24 hours.
- Diamond, Pearl, Platinum - Female massage therapists in Veilstone City will give you an additional 3 points.
- Diamond, Pearl, Platinum - A massage at the Ribbon Syndicate will earn you an additional 20 points if Friendship level is less than 100.
- Black and White - Getting a massage from a female therapist on Castelia Street will earn you 30 Friendship points.
- Black 2 and White 2 - Massage therapists can be found in the Medal Office. The bonus points are the same as Black and White.
Step 4. Use Vitamins regularly
Vitamins are items that increase Friendship along with their original properties.
- HP Up
- Protein
- Iron
- Calcium
- Carbos
- PP Up
- Rare Candy
- Zinc
- PP Max
Step 5. Level up Eevee to increase Friendship
Each time Eevee levels up, you will earn 1-3 points, depending on your current Friendship level. You can level up Eevee through battle or give Rare Candy.
Step 6. Give Eevee an EV-lowering berry
You can earn up to 10 Friendship points by giving the following EV berries to Eevee:
- Pomeg
- Kelpsy
- Qualot
- Hondew
- Grepa
- Tamato
Step 7. Don't let Eevee lose
Eevee will lose 1 Friendship point if they lose. If it looks like Eevee is on the verge of losing, immediately switch to another Pokémon, and make sure you don't use any healing items on Eevee (see next step).
Step 8. Try not to give any healing items to Eevee
Healing items will negatively affect Eevee's Friendship level. Do not use any of the following items on Eevee and only heal or revive him at the Pokémon Center.
- Energy Powder: -5 points
- Heal Powder: -5 points
- Energy Root: -10 points
- Herb Revival: -15 points
Step 9. Check Eevee's Friendship level (Generation IV)
Make Eevee the main Pokémon in your party/group and talk to the Friendship checker at the Pokémon Fan Club in Hearthome City. Sentences spoken by the Friendship checker determine the Friendship Eevee level:
- 50 - 99: "You should treat it better. It's not used to you." (D, P); "It's feeling neutral toward you. It's up to you to change that." (pl)
- 100 - 149: " It's quite cute." (D, P); " It's warming up to you. That's my impression." (pl)
- 150 - 199: " It's friendly towards you. It looks sort of happy." (D, P); " It's quite friendly to you. It must be happy being with you." (pl)
- 200 - 254: " I get the feeling that it really trusts you." (D, P); "It's very friendly toward you. I can tell you treat it kindly." (pl)
- 255: " It looks really happy! It must love you a lot." (D, P); " It simply adores you! Why, I feel like I am intruding !" (pl)
Step 10. Check Eevee's Friendship level (Generation V)
Make Eevee the main Pokémon in your party/group and talk to the Friendship checker at the Pokémon Fan Club in Icirrus City. Sentences spoken by the Friendship checker determine the Friendship Eevee level:
- 70 - 99: " The relationship is neither good nor bad… It looks neutral."
- 100 - 149: " It is a little friendly to you… That's what I'm getting."
- 150 - 194: " It is friendly to you. It must be happy with you."
- 195 - 254: " It is quite friendly to you! You must be a kind person !"
- 255: " It is super friendly to you! I'm a bit jealous !"
Step 11. Raise Eevee's level during the day (Espeon) or night (Umbreon) if it seems like Eevee's Friendship level has reached 220
If the Eevee has reached a Friendship level of 220 or more, evolve during the day to get Espeon or at night to get Umbreon. If Eevee doesn't evolve, it means that his Friendship level is still low. Make sure you're not near Mossy Rocks or Ice Rocks so Eevee doesn't accidentally turn into Leafeon or Glaceon.
- In Generation IV, daylight lasts between 4:00 AM (4.00) - 7:59 PM (19.59) and night lasts between 8:00 PM (20.00) - 3:59 AM (3.59).
- In Generation V, the time of day and night varies depending on the season.
Method 4 of 5: Generation III
Step 1. Give the Soothe Bell for Eevee to hold
Soothe Bell is the first object to appear in Generation III. This item will give 2 additional Friendship points to Eevee every time you do activities that add Friendship points. Eevee's Friendship level needs to be raised to 220 or above in order to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon so this item will really help speed up the process. You can get Soothe Balls from the Pokémon Fan Club.
Step 2. Walk around while Eevee is in the party/group
Eevee will earn 1 Friendship point for every 256 steps with you.
Step 3. Use Vitamins regularly
Vitamins are items that increase Friendship along with their original properties (between 2-5, depending on current Friendship level).
- HP Up
- Protein
- Iron
- Calcium
- Carbos
- PP Up
- Rare Candy
- Zinc
- PP Max
Step 4. Level up Eevee
If the Eevee has a Friendship level of less than 100, the points earned from leveling up are 5, while if it is above 100, the points earned are 3. If the Eevee's Friendship level is above 200, the points earned are 2.
Step 5. Give Eevee an EV-lowering berry
This type of berry is for seasoned players who want to maximize their Pokémon stats. For every EV-lowering berry given, Eevee will get 2 Friendship points:
- Pomeg
- Kelpsy
- Qualot
- Hondew
- Grepa
- Tamato
Step 6. Don't let Eevee lose
Eevee will lose 1 Friendship point if they lose. If it looks like Eevee is on the verge of losing, immediately switch to another Pokémon, and make sure you don't use any healing items on Eevee (see next step).
Step 7. Try not to give any healing items to Eevee
Healing items will negatively affect Eevee's Friendship level. Do not use any of the following items on Eevee and only heal or revive him at the Pokémon Center.
- Energy Powder: -5 points
- Heal Powder: -5 points
- Energy Root: -10 points
- Herb Revival: -15 points
Step 8. Check Eevee's Friendship level (Generation V)
Make Eevee the main Pokémon in your party/group and head to Verdanturf Town. There, talk to the woman in the lower left corner of the city. The words he spoke determined Eevee's Friendship level:
- 50 - 99: " It's not very used to you yet. It neither loves nor hates you."
- 100 - 149: " It's getting used to you. It seems to believe in you."
- 150 - 199: " It likes you quite a lot. It seems to want to be babed a little."
- 200 - 254: " It seems to be very happy. It obviously likes you a whole lot."
- 255: " It adores you. It can't possibly love you any more. I even feel happy seeing it."
Step 9. Raise Eevee's level during the day (Espeon) or night (Umbreon) if it seems that Eevee's Friendship level has reached 220
If the Eevee has reached a Friendship level of 220 or more, evolve during the day to get Espeon or at night to get Umbreon. If Eevee doesn't evolve, it means that his Friendship level is still low. Use Rare Candy or level up Eevee through battle.
- Afternoon lasts between 12:00 PM (12:00) to 11:59 PM (23:59).
- Evenings last from 12:00 AM (00.00) to 11:59 AM (11.59)
Method 5 of 5: Generation II
Step 1. Always carry Eevee with you when browsing
In order for an Eevee to turn into an Espeon or Umbreon, you need to raise its Friendship level to at least level 220. The most common way to increase Friendship is to keep Eevee with you while you travel. Eevee will earn 1 Friendship point per 512 steps in the game.
Step 2. Dress up Eevee
Talk to the Haircut Brother in the Goldenrod Tunnel. You can mow Eevee's fur every 24 hours to earn 10 Friendship points.
Step 3. Ask Daisy to style Eevee's fur
Talk to Daisy in Pallet Town between 3 and 4 PM to dress Eevee's fur. This step will give Eevee 3 Friendship points.
Step 4. Give vitamins to Eevee regularly
Here are some items that are categorized as "vitamins" and can be given to Pokémon. Give these items to Eevee to earn between 3 and 5 Friendship points:
- HP Up
- Protein
- Iron
- Calcium
- Carbos
- PP Up
- Rare Candy
Step 5. Level up Eevee
Level up Eevee through battle or use Rare Candy to earn 5 points if Friendship level is less than 100. Eevee will earn 3 points if Friendship level is between 100 and 200. If Friendship level is above 200, points earned are 2.
Step 6. Bring Eevee when fighting the Gym leader
Make sure Eevee is included in your group when you will challenge the Gym leader to get an additional 1-3 Friendship points.
Step 7. Don't let Eevee in a fight
If Eevee loses the battle, he will lose 1 Friendship point. Make sure to replace it if it looks like Eevee will lose. Don't use healing items either (see next step).
Step 8. Try not to give healing items
Healing items will drastically reduce Eevee's Friendship level. So avoid using them as much as possible and only heal your Pokémon at the nearest Pokémon Center.
- Energy Powder (-5 points)
- Heal Powder (-5 points)
- Energy Root (-10 points)
- Revival Herb (-15 points)
Step 9. Check Eevee's Friendship level
Make Eevee the main Pokémon in the group, and talk to the woman in the house east of the Goldenrod City Department Store. The sentence he spoke determined Eevee's current level of Friendship.
- 50 - 99:" You should treat it better. It's not used to you."
- 100 - 149: " It's quite cute."
- 150 - 199: " It's friendly toward you. Sort of happy."
- 200 - 249: " I get the feeling it really trusts you."
- 250 - 255: " It looks really happy! It must love you a lot."
Step 10. Level up Eevee during the day (Espeon) or at night (Umbreon) once Friendship level is at 220
If it looks like Eevee's Friendship level is above 220 Friendship, level it up during the day to get Espeon, or at night to get Umbreon. You can level up Eevee through battle or use Rare Candy. If Eevee doesn't evolve, it means his Friendship level hasn't reached 200 yet.
- Afternoon takes place between 4:00 AM (4.00) - 5:59 PM (17.59).
- Evenings take place between 6:00 PM (18:00) - 3:59 AM (3.59).
Tips
- If you're playing Pokémon XD, Eevee can evolve into Espeon with Sun Shard, or into Umbreon with Moon Shard.
- Don't use Pokémon Amie to increase Friendship. This method will result in Sylveon if Eevee knows a fairy-type move, and yields nothing if he doesn't know it.
