Oregano is a leaf of an herbal plant that is not only used in cooking. Oregano is also used in natural medicine for various minor ailments, from colds and coughs, digestive ailments, to aches (headaches, toothaches, etc.) and aches. If you have a cough and want to try natural remedies, you can use oregano to help with your symptoms.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making Oregano Oil
Step 1. Prepare the oregano
To make oregano oil, you must first make sure the oregano is completely dry. If there are parts that are excess water or damp, it can later cause mold or bacteria to grow in the oil. Prepare some oregano for the oil you are going to make, such as cup or 1 cup.
Step 2. Select the type of oil
If you're making oregano oil, you'll be using oil and oregano in a 1:1 ratio. This means that you will add the same amount of oil and oregano. If you have cup of oregano, you will need cup of oil.
You can use olive oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, or almond oil
Step 3. Crush the oregano
It's a good idea to crush the oregano before adding it to the oil to get the oil out. You can do this in two different ways. You can wet or chop the oregano leaves with a knife.
- You can also put oregano in plastic and crush it with a small wooden mallet (mallet) or rolling pin.
- If you have a pestle/masher or similar tool, you can also crush oregano with that tool.
Step 4. Warm the oil
Before adding oil to oregano, you need to make sure the oil is warm. You can warm it up in the microwave, or you can pour it in a glass container that you soak in hot water. Make sure the oil is warm enough, not too hot or boiling.
- Warming the oil will help the oregano to soak in better.
- As an alternative to infusing it, you can soak the jar in hot water after you've added the oregano and tightly seal the jar. Soak the jars in hot water for up to 10 minutes.
Step 5. Add oregano
As soon as the oil warms up, put the oregano and oil in a clean jar. Stir to mix the oregano completely. You can also squeeze oregano leaves to remove the oil content.
Once the oregano is added, close the jar
Step 6. Soak the oil for a few weeks
The oil needs to soak in for a few weeks, at least you need to let it soak for about two weeks. You can place the jar on a window sill that gets a lot of sunlight so that the sun's rays will heat the oil and help the infiltration process.
- Make sure you shake the jar every few days.
- Some people think that allowing the soaking process to take longer will improve the quality of the oil for treatment. If you want the soaking process to last longer, leave it up to six weeks. If it is longer the oil can be damaged.
Step 7. Strain the oil
After the oil has soaked for a few weeks, you need to do a filter. Use a strainer or cheesecloth to strain the oregano from the oil. Make sure to remove all the oil in the oregano leaves.
- Put the oil in a clean jar or dropper bottle. Store in a dark and cool place.
- You can also store it in the refrigerator.
Method 2 of 3: Making Cough Syrup with Oregano
Step 1. Prepare the necessary materials
To make natural cough syrup, you will need garlic, oregano and honey. You will need cup of honey, 2 cloves of garlic, and 2 sprigs of fresh oregano. Instead of oregano leaves, you can measure about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of oregano.
- Garlic, honey, and oregano are antimicrobials (materials that have the potential to inhibit the growth and metabolism of microbes) that can help fight colds and coughs naturally.
- If you want, you can also add cup of onion and a lemon.
Step 2. Boil the oregano and garlic
Boil the garlic and oregano in cup of water for about five minutes.
Step 3. Combine with honey
Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to cool, then pour a cup of honey into it. After everything is mixed, the syrup is ready to drink.
Step 4. Soak in hot water for one night
Another way to make cough syrup is to let the mixture sit overnight. First add the oregano to the bottom of the jar, then add the garlic, then the lemon and onion. Pour the honey and water over the mixture, making sure the water completely covers all the ingredients. Cover the jars so that they are airtight, and soak them in hot water overnight. In the morning, strain the liquid and drink it.
- Store in the refrigerator for one week.
- This method results in a stronger cough syrup because the garlic and onion (if you add the onion) are stronger and more nutritious if they are not cooked.
Method 3 of 3: Using Oregano for Medicine
Step 1. Use oregano cough syrup
Oregano cough syrup can be taken. Take a spoonful as often as needed to treat a cough or sore throat.
Do not give cough syrup to children under one year of age because it contains honey
Step 2. Drink oregano oil to treat colds and coughs
Oregano oil can be taken by mouth to treat various symptoms of colds and coughs. If you have a dropper, you can take two full drops when you feel any cold symptoms, including coughing.
Another way to use oregano oil as a cough suppressant is to take three to five drops daily when you have a cough. You can mix the oil in water, orange juice, or drink it straight
Step 3. Use oregano oil only when you are sick
Some people take oregano oil daily as a stimulant. However, most people believe that you should only take it when you are sick. Oregano oil is considered an effective and very powerful herbal remedy, so taking it only when you have cold and cough symptoms and when you are sick will help strengthen the oil's effectiveness.
Step 4. Know the benefits of oregano oil for treatment
Oregano oil is an anti-inflammatory/analgesic, antifungal and antibacterial agent. Oregano oil is also recommended as a natural pain reliever.
