Slime is really fun to play with. The texture is mushy, sticky, and feels tingly. While you can buy them at the store, it's much more fun to make them at home. One of the most popular ways to make slime requires borax, but not everyone has it. Luckily there are so many other ways to make slime using ingredients readily available around you. One of the easiest ways is to use glue and liquid detergent.

Step

Method 1 of 2: Making Classic Slime

Step 1. Mix the same amount of white paper glue and water

Pour 1/2 cup (120 ml) of water into a bowl. Then, mix in 1/2 cup (120 ml) of white paper glue. Make sure there is no glue left on the cup. Use a fork, spoon, or small rubber spatula to remove any excess glue from the cup.

Step 2. Add food coloring or glitter, if desired

Start with two drops of food coloring. Stir the mixture, then add more food coloring if needed. If you want to make shimmery slime, add a teaspoon of glitter. Stir, then add more glitter to your liking.

Step 3. Add 1/4 cup (60 ml) of liquid detergent and stir with a fork

When you mix the liquid detergent with the glue, the mixture will start to thicken. Keep stirring until it becomes lumps.

Use clear liquid detergent or, if colored, match the food coloring you use

Step 4. Knead the slime by hand for 1 to 2 minutes

If the bowl you're using is too small for kneading, pour the slime onto a flat surface and knead there. The longer you knead it, the harder the slime will be and less runny. This step takes about 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 5. Play with slime, then store it in an airtight container

An airtight plastic container or plastic clip bag is the best place to store slime. Keep in mind that after a few days the slime will dry out and harden, especially if you keep playing with it.

Method 2 of 2: Making Putty Slime

Step 1. Pour 1/4 cup (60 ml) of clear paper glue into a bowl

Use a spoon, fork, or small rubber spatula to scoop all the glue from the cup into the bowl. You can use regular clear glue or glitter glue.

If you're using clear paper glue, add two drops of food coloring and 1 teaspoon of glitter to make it more interesting

Step 2. Use a fork to mix 2 teaspoons of liquid detergent

The glue will start to mix and clump together. You can use any type of liquid detergent you want, but remember that your choice of detergent will affect the color of the slime. For best results, match the color of the detergent to the color of the glue. You can also use clear liquid detergent if you can find one.

Step 3. Add another teaspoon of liquid detergent and mix

The glue will harden so you'll need to mix the detergent and glue by pressing it with the back of a fork.

Step 4. Knead the slime by hand for 1 to 2 minutes

Take the slime. Squeeze and press with your hands until it starts to harden and not runny. This step takes 1 to 2 minutes.

  • The longer you knead it, the tougher the slime will become and look like putty.
  • If the slime is still too sticky, add a little liquid detergent. Try adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent.

Step 5. Add a little shaving cream for a fluffy slime, if you wish

If you want the slime to be softer in texture, put the slime back in the bowl and add a little shaving cream on top. Mix the shaving cream into the slime by kneading it. Make sure you mix all the shaving cream on the sides of the bowl. This step will take a few minutes.

  • Make sure you use foam shaving cream, not gel.
  • The slime will be lighter in color after you add the shaving cream.

Step 6. Play with slime, then store in an airtight container

Plastic containers or plastic clip bags are the most suitable storage containers. Remember that the slime will eventually dry out and harden after a few days. How long the slime lasts depends on how often you play with it. The more you play with it and expose it to air, the faster the slime dries.

Tips

  • If the slime is still too sticky, add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of liquid detergent.
  • If the slime is too hard, add 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of glue.
  • Add liquid detergent little by little. If you add it too quickly, the slime won't stretch or have a putty like texture.
  • If you have sensitive skin, consider using a liquid detergent specially formulated for sensitive skin or babies.
  • If your clothes or carpet get slime, clean it immediately with a damp cloth.
  • Use green food coloring for a traditional slime color.
  • Color the slime according to your taste. However, remember that the color of the liquid detergent will also affect the color of the slime.
  • If your slime doesn't stretch, add lotion or moisturizer.

Warning

  • Do not store slime in a cold place after it is finished. Your slime may become less stretchy.
  • Don't eat the slime. Small children should be supervised when playing it.
