Getting naturally curly hair may be difficult for those of you who have straight hair. However, there are several ways that you can use to create the look of naturally curly hair, such as pinning your hair, curling your hair in cloth, using hair rollers, and braiding and bunting your hair. In addition, there are also ways to enhance the appearance of curly hair if your hair is already slightly wavy.
Step
Method 1 of 5: Using Socks and Sheets
Step 1. Cut several socks of equal length
To curl your hair in a cloth, you will need lots of sheets of cloth. You can make sheets of fabric by cutting an old sock to the same length (from toe to ankle) or cutting a few towels or an old T-shirt into long strips.
Do not make sheets that are too short or thin. You will need this sheet to tie sections of hair
Step 2. Shampoo
Start with clean, damp hair, but not too wet. If your hair is still very wet, pat it with a soft towel to absorb the excess water. You can also comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb to straighten out the tangles.
If you have thick hair, you may need to blow dry it first with a hairdryer until it's barely dry. Otherwise, your hair may not dry overnight and won't be curled successfully with a cloth roll
Step 3. Apply a small amount of hair gel or mousse
To keep your curls longer, use gel or mousse. Using gel or mousse will also make your hairstyle last longer.
- Try using a product that can help curl your hair, such as curling mousse.
- Use a lot of mousse.
Step 4. Part the hair into small sections
Start by parting the hair in the middle and then splitting each in half. This will make your hair easier to style.
You may also need to pin your hair at the top so you can style your hair one section at a time
Step 5. Start rolling your hair in a sock sheet
Take some hair, and start curling it in a sock sheet. Place the ends of your hair under the sheet of the sock, and begin to curl your hair around it. Keep curling your hair until it reaches your scalp.
- The less hair you roll in one sheet, the tighter the curls will be.
- If you curl more hair in one sheet, you will get looser curls.
Step 6. Tie the fabric sheet tightly
Bring the two ends of the sheet together and tie it tightly. You may need to tie a double knot if your hair is very thick.
You can also use hair clips to hold your hair in position if the knots come loose easily
Step 7. Roll all your hair
Continue to roll your hair around the sheet until it's completely gone. Try to curl the hair in equal numbers as much as possible. However, it doesn't have to be rolled exactly the same way.
Step 8. Wait for the hair to dry before unrolling the fabric
The time it takes for the hair to dry may be several hours, or even overnight. Do not remove the roll of fabric too early, or the result will not be good.
- Try removing a piece of cloth first to check. If your hair is dry and curly, you can unroll another.
- It doesn't matter if the roll of cloth comes off at night. You can use curling irons to style areas that don't work.
Step 9. Style your hair the way you want
As soon as the roll of fabric is removed, the resulting curls may be very tight. You can leave it that way, or make it more fluffy by brushing your fingers.
- Spray a little hairspray to maintain the shape of your hair.
- If you prefer softer classic curls, you can use a comb to style your hair.
Method 2 of 5: Using Hair Rollers
Step 1. Prepare the equipment
You can use plastic or foam rollers to curl your hair naturally. Since this method does not require heat, your hair will not be damaged. You need:
- Multiple pieces of foam rollers of your choice (small, medium, large, or extra large)
- Wide tooth comb
- A little hair gel or mousse (optional)
Step 2. Wash and use conditioner
Make sure your hair is clean and tangle-free. So, shampoo and use conditioner if you haven't done so today. Comb your hair while it's still wet to smooth out the tangles.
Step 3. Consider using some styling products
If your hair is completely straight or can't hold the curls long enough, you may need to use a little hair gel or mousse. This product will help keep your curly hair style longer and more beautiful.
- Use a lot of mousse to make sure you get the best hairstyle.
- You can also use products specially formulated for curling hair.
Step 4. Start curling your hair little by little
Take a small section of hair and wrap it around the hair rollers. Start at the ends of your hair and roll up to your scalp. Glue your hair to the rollers and begin to curl it towards your head. Clip the hair rollers if necessary.
- Make sure the hair rollers lie horizontally on your head.
- You can part your hair in the middle and place the rollers on the right and left sides of your head.
- You can also take the hair at the top of your head and tuck the rollers horizontally there.
Step 5. Wait for the hair to dry completely
You should make sure your hair is completely dry before removing the rollers. If you are in a hurry, use a hairdryer on medium heat. If you remove the rollers too quickly, the results will not be as good, and your hair may not even curl at all.
Step 6. Style your hair the way you want
You can let your hair form tight curls by not touching it at all, or separate it into separate sections. If you want to keep your curls tight, you might want to spray some hairspray as well.
- You can also soften the look of curly hair by separating the sections with your fingers.
- Do not use a hairbrush to style curly hair or it will look frizzy. Use a wide-toothed comb if you want to soften the look of curly hair a bit.
Method 3 of 5: Braiding and Braiding Hair
Step 1. Make sure your hair is clean and damp
Wash and use conditioner before starting. You may also need to comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb while it's wet to untangle the tangles.
Try combing your hair while you're in the shower while you're still using conditioner
Step 2. Use styling products
To keep your curls longer, apply mousse or gel before continuing. Make sure to apply the product all over your hair.
Try using a special product for curling your hair, such as curling mousse. The results you get will be better
Step 3. Try braiding your hair to get wavy hair
The more braids you make, the tighter the curls will be. Make at least two braids, one on each side of your head.
To get tight curls, try making four braids. Note that this method will only curl the bottom half of your hair. Meanwhile, the top will remain straight
Step 4. Try making a French braid to make your entire hair curly
Again, the more braids you make, the tighter the result. One or two braids will make your hair look wavy. Meanwhile, five or six braids will create tighter curls.
Step 5. Twist the hair into a small bun
Part the hair in the middle, then part each side in half. Tie each section of hair so you have four ponytails. Take the hair from the lower left side and twist it into a string. Keep twisting your hair until it shrivels up on its own and forms a bun. Keep the bun in position by tying or attaching some hair clips. Repeat this step on the bottom right side, and the top two sections of hair.
You can also bun with socks to create a more wavy look
Step 6. Wait for your hair to dry completely before removing the bun or braid
The time required may be several hours. If you're in a hurry, you can use a hairdryer on a low or medium setting. However, you will get the best results if you wait all night.
Step 7. Style your hair if you want
When the braid or bun is removed, the resulting curls may be very tight. You can make your hair look more bouncy by combing it with your fingers. However, don't use a hairbrush, or your hair will look tangled.
Method 4 of 5: Beautify the look of naturally curly hair and reduce frizz
Step 1. Wash your hair at most three times a week
The more often you shampoo, the drier your hair will be. In fact, dry hair will look tangled instead of curly. On the other hand, you can use conditioner more often.
- When shampooing, try to use more shampoo on the scalp and less on the ends of the hair.
- On the other hand, when using conditioner, try to apply more to the ends of the hair and less to the scalp.
Step 2. Use sulfate-free hair care products
Sulfates are harsh cleaning agents and can make hair dry, brittle, and frizzy. This is the reason why you should avoid shampoos and other hair care products that contain sulfates.
- Look for hair care products that are labeled "sulfate-free".
- You can also try shampooing every two days, or every three or even four days.
Step 3. Use a wide-toothed comb to style curly hair
Never use the brush on dry hair. The brush will damage the curly hair pattern and make it frizzy. So, it's best to use a wide-toothed comb to manage your curls.
- Start styling your hair from the ends, and never brush your hair straight from the roots to the ends because it will make your hair break and fall out.
- However, you can use a brush on curly hair that is still wet. Make sure to brush your hair a little at a time starting at the ends.
Step 4. Try to let your hair dry by itself
If you must use a dryer, spray a heat protectant product first. Next, use a medium or low temperature dryer equipped with a diffuser. Drying your hair like this will help maintain the natural curl pattern of your hair.
While your hair is still damp, try curling it with your fingers. Roll your hair with your fingers and then remove your fingers from the middle of the curl. Repeat this method for the other sections of hair. This will help shape the curly hair pattern as well as let it fall in the same direction
Step 5. Dry your hair with a T-shirt or microfiber towel
Regular towels are generally too coarse for curly hair. The fibers in the towel can pull on the brittle strands of hair, causing them to break. Instead, try patting your hair dry with a T-shirt or microfiber towel.
Step 6. Use several products to beautify or treat frizz
There are a variety of products in beauty stores and salons that can enhance the look of your naturally curly hair. Most of these products should be used on hair while it is still wet. Meanwhile, some can be used when the hair is dry. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Use mousse and gel on damp hair to maximize the look of curls. For starters, pour the product the size of a grape and rub it with your finger.
- Use the oil on dry hair to get rid of the tangles. Start by applying a little oil to the ends of your hair. Try using natural argan oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil.
- Use sea salt spray to create the look of beach waves. Just remember that this spray will make your hair sticky. You can make this spray yourself at home by simply mixing sea salt and water.
- Use an anti-frizz cream on dry or damp hair. For starters, pour a grape-sized amount of product and work it over the ends and outermost layers of your hair.
Step 7. Consider getting a haircut every six weeks
Trimming your hair regularly will help get rid of split ends. You can also take this opportunity to flatten or add layers of hair. Layer hairstyles are great for enhancing the look of curly hair. Flat hair that has no layers will weigh more and make it look like it's straight.
Method 5 of 5: Using Hair Clips
Step 1. Prepare the equipment
You can get naturally curly hair with just a bobby pin, a tool that has been in use for years. With hair clips, you don't need chemicals or expensive products to curl your hair. All you have to do is curl the hair up with tongs and leave it on your scalp for a few hours. Here is a list of the equipment you will need:
- hair clips
- Mousse (optional)
- Comb
Step 2. Start with freshly washed hair that is still damp
Your hair should not be too wet or it will take too long to dry. If necessary, pat your hair with a soft towel to remove any excess water.
If your hair is very straight or doesn't hold the curls well, you may need to use hair mousse
Step 3. Part the hair in the middle
This will help you determine the direction of curling your hair. When curling the left side of your head, curl your hair in a clockwise direction. Meanwhile, while curling the right side of your head, curl your hair counterclockwise. That way, the results will be uniform.
Step 4. Take about 2cm of hair from the top of your head
Make sure the hair can be pinned on the head. If you pick up too much hair, it will take too long to dry. Also, hair clips won't be able to hold onto sections of hair that are too thick.
- Try using a comb to part your hair.
- You may also need to pin sections of your hair so you can style the sections individually.
Step 5. Use a comb to smooth the hair
Try to straighten each section of hair as much as possible. Start by combing your hair from the roots to the tips.
Step 6. Start curling your hair with your fingers
Place the ends of your hair on your fingers and start winding them all the way up.
Step 7. Pull your fingers out of the hair coil
When pulling the hair from the middle of the bobbin, make sure to hold the shape with your other hand. Press the roll of hair toward your head.
Step 8. Tuck in two bobby pins to keep the curls in position
When tucking the bobby pins, try to make an X shape. This way, the curls will stick tightly to your head.
Step 9. Repeat the above steps for the rest of the hair
Remember to always roll your hair close to your face. This means, when curling the left side of your head, curl your hair in a clockwise direction. Meanwhile, while curling the right side of your head, curl your hair counterclockwise.
Step 10. Wait for at least three hours before removing the hair clips
Your hair must be completely dry before removing the bobby pins. If you're in a hurry, you can use a low- or medium-temperature dryer to speed up the drying process.
The resulting curls may be very tight when the new hair clips are removed. You can style it by combing your fingers so it looks softer and more fluffy
Step 11. Done
