This wikiHow teaches you how to name an animal or creature (also known as a "mob") in Minecraft using name tags.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Getting Name Tags
Step 1. Gather the materials needed to make an anvil (anvil or anvil for forging)
You need an anvil to modify the name tag later. Some of the materials needed to make an anvil:
- Three iron blocks - Each iron block requires 9 iron bars. So you need 27 iron bars.
- Four iron bars - Coupled with this, in total you need 31 iron ingots.
- Iron rods can be made by placing iron ore (a gray rock with orange-brown spots) into a furnace filled with coal.
Step 2. Open the crafting table
A table that has dimensions of 3 x 3 will open.
If you don't have a crafting table yet, you can make one by placing one wooden plank in each crafting slot (4 slots)
Step 3. Create an anvil
You can do this by placing 3 iron blocks in the top row of the crafting table, 3 iron ingots in the bottom row of squares, and 1 iron ingot in the middle square. Next, select the anvil icon.
- For the Minecraft PE version, tap on the black anvil icon on the left side.
- On the console version of Minecraft, select the anvil icon in the " Structures " tab.
Step 4. Be aware that you cannot create name tags
Name tags can only be collected in one of the three ways below:
- Fishing - You can get blank name tags when fishing.
- Buying from villagers - You can buy blank name tags from villagers for 20 to 22 emeralds.
- Loot the fort - If you find a chest in a fort, an abandoned mine tunnel, or in a mansion, you have a 22 to 40 percent chance of getting a name tag.
Step 5. Make a fishing rod (fishing rod)
You will need three sticks and two ropes to make it.
You can also combine two broken fishing rods to make one usable rod
Step 6. Fishing until you get one name tag
To fish, cast the hook by right-clicking (or tapping, or pressing the left button) while pointing yourself into the water holding the rod. When the fishing float moves under the surface of the water and you hear a splashing sound, immediately press the " Cast " button again.
You'll probably get a lot of fish and various trash before you get the name tag as this is a rare item
Step 7. Talk to the villagers to buy name tags
Villages with randomly generated building structures will be placed around the Minecraft world. If you know the location of a village and have a lot of emeralds, you can get name tags by buying them. This is a faster way than fishing.
To talk to a villager, you have to turn your body towards it, then right-click, tap, or press the left button
Step 8. Loot the fort, mine tunnel, or mansion
Chests in this area have a high probability of producing name tags. Since the locations of the buildings are randomly placed, this method is very inefficient if you don't know the location of the fortress/mining tunnel/large house in your world.
- Big houses are very rare.
- As usual, looting forts carries a high risk because you will encounter a lot of enemies in it.
Part 2 of 2: Creating a Custom Name Tag
Step 1. Make sure you are at level one (minimum requirement)
The experience level, which is the green number at the bottom of the screen, must be at level one before you can create a custom name tag.
Step 2. Place the anvil on the ground
When you do, you will hear a loud "clunk" sound.
Step 3. Bring your name tag
The way to do this is to open your inventory and move the name tag to your character's hotbar, then select the name tag. Your character's hand will hold the name tag.
Step 4. Select an anvil
An anvil craft window will open with your name tag in it.
Step 5. Enter a name for the name tag
Do this in the " Name " column at the top of the anvil window.
In the console edition, you must first select the " Name " field, then press X or A.
Step 6. Choose your name tag
The name tag will be moved to inventory.
Step 7. Bring the custom name tag along
Once the name tag is in hand, you're ready to name the mob.
On the console edition of Minecraft, select the name tag, and press Triangle or Y.
Step 8. Look for monsters or animals
You'll have to be careful when naming attacking mobs (like zombies), but you can name animals like cows or sheep without putting yourself in danger.
Step 9. Face the mob and select the creature
As long as you have your name tag in your hand, a text box containing your name tag will be placed above the head of the mob.
You can repeat this process on as many mobs as you want because the name tag can be used indefinitely
Tips
- The name tag text can still be changed if you haven't used it on the mob yet.
- You will not be able to name mobs using unformatted name tags.
