Today, the web world is filled with Java-based programs. Java allows for more interactive content creation and can empower highly creative pages. To view the content of the page, you need to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Installing the JRE only takes a few minutes, regardless of your operating system. See step 1 below to learn how.
Step
Step 1. These steps are to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for the browser
For a developer tools (JDK) installation guide, see this guide. Java is also different from JavaScript. If you need JavaScript enabled, take a look at this guide
Step 2. Visit the Java webpage
Java installs system files that are used by all browsers, so you don't have to follow specific browser-specific instructions. You can get the Java installation program from the Java site.
- The Java installation program will download the files during the installation process. If you need to install Java on an offline device, download the Offline Installer available on the Manual Downloads page.
- Depending on your browser settings, you may need to accept the download of the Java installation program before the installation begins.
- For Mac OS X 10.6, Java is available by default. For OS X 10.7 and above, Java is not available by default. You need OS X 10.7.3 or later to install Java. You should also use a 64-bit browser like Safari or Firefox, not Chrome.
- For Linux, Java must be downloaded, manually installed, and enabled for it to work. Read this guide for details on how to install Java on Linux.
Step 3. Start the installation program
Once the program has finished downloading, run it to start the installation. On OS X, double-click the.dmg file to start the installation.
Close all browser windows before starting the installation, as the browser will still need to be restarted after installation is complete
Step 4. Follow the installation steps
Read each screen on the installation program. Java will try to install other programs such as the browser toolbar unless you clear the check box. If you don't want your browser settings to change, make sure you read each screen carefully.
Step 5. Check the installation
After you have completed the Java installation, test the installation to make sure everything is fine. You can find the Java test applet on the Java site, or by searching for "java test" and clicking the first result.
