Adding a hashtag to a Facebook post can make it easier for other users to find you who share your interests. The way hashtags work on Facebook is similar to how they work on Twitter. When clicked, the hashtag will display public posts containing it. The hashtag feature can now be used by almost all Facebook users. The hashtag will appear in the Facebook timeline and be clickable by users.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Using Hashtags on Facebook
Step 1. Go to the Facebook website and log in to the account
Step 2. Click the Home link at the top right of the screen to open your Facebook profile
Step 3. Type the post in the “What do you think, [your name]?
” (What's on your mind, [your name]?).
Step 4. Type in the “#” sign followed by the topic or phrase you want to add to the post
All words in the phrase must be written without spaces, such as “#I LoveWikiHow.”
Hashtags can contain both numbers and letters. However, you can't include punctuation in hashtags, such as commas, exclamation points, asterisks, and so on
Step 5. Consider making the post public if you want people you aren't friends with to be able to search for the hashtag (optional)
Step 6. Click the "Submit" (Post) button after typing the post and hashtag
The created hashtag can be clicked on by Facebook users to search for other similar posts.
Part 2 of 2: Using Hashtags Properly
Step 1. Create hashtags that match the content of the post
The function of hashtags is to connect you with other users who share the same interests. If you create hashtags that don't match the content of your post just to get people's attention, other users may consider it spam.
Step 2. Use specific hashtags when writing posts about a specific topic
This can help other users to narrow down their search when looking for users who share similar interests. For example, if you want to make a post about basketball, use a specific hashtag like “#basketball” or “#NBA” rather than an ambiguous or generic hashtag like “#sports.”
Step 3. Use trending hashtags
After clicking a hashtag on Facebook, a list of trending hashtags will appear at the far right of the screen. Adding a trending hashtag to a post can grab a lot of people's attention. However, in 2018 the Trending Topics feature was disabled by Facebook.
Step 4. Create a unique hashtag to make it look more attractive than other hashtags
If you have specific interests or maintain a Facebook account for a specific company or organization, you can create unique hashtags to make them look more attractive than competitors' hashtags.
Tips
- If you want people to see your post or profile, create a unique hashtag and reward the user who creates a post containing that hashtag. This is especially helpful for companies or organizations that offer special promotions.
- Include hashtags in posts when using Facebook on mobile to reach more people. The hashtag format on mobile is slightly different than the hashtag format on a computer. You can capitalize all hashtags on mobile.
- Use the search feature on Facebook to search for hashtags that contain content of interest. For example, if you want to find the latest posts and news about the Olympics, type “#olympics” or “#olympics” into the search field.
- When using hashtags that contain multiple words, capitalize the first letter of each word so people can read it easily. For example, you could type “#WikiHowEasyMyLife.”
Warning
- Avoid using more than 2 or 3 hashtags on each Facebook post. Using a large number of hashtags will make your post look like spam, especially if you're trying to promote yourself or your business.
- Avoid using hashtags that annoy others, such as #nofilter, #nomakeup, etc.
