Cookies are usually stored in the computer's internet browser by default. Cookies are used to store settings and information on web pages that you have accessed. However, cookies can also sometimes be used to track users and deliver advertisements. Some people prefer to disable cookies to maintain their privacy. This wikiHow teaches you how to block cookies in various web browsers.
Step
Method 1 of 7: Google Chrome (Desktop Computer)
Step 1. Click the Chrome menu which has a three-dot icon
It's in the top-right corner of Chrome.
Step 2. Click Settings at the bottom of the Chrome menu
Step 3. Click Show advanced settings or Advanced
You can find it at the bottom of the Settings menu. Doing so will expand the Settings menu.
Step 4. Click Site Settings or Content settings
It's in the "Privacy and security" section.
Step 5. Click Cookies and site data
This can be found at the top of the Site Settings menu.
Step 6. Click the switch
next to "Allow sites to save and read cookie data".
The button is to the right of "Allow sites to save and read cookies (recommended)" at the top of the "Cookies and site data" menu.
In older versions, select "Block sites from setting any data"
Step 7. Click the switch
next to "Block third-party cookies".
The button is to the right of "Block third-party cookies" in the "Cookies and site data" menu.
Alternatively, you can block cookies for specific websites. Do this by clicking Add next to "Block" and enter the address of the site whose cookies you want to block. Next, click Add.
Step 8. Click the switch
next to "Clear cookies and site data when you quit Chrome".
This will delete the existing cookies every time the Chrome browser is closed. In the future, all existing cookies will be deleted every time Chrome is closed.
If you don't want the cookies to be deleted every time Chrome is closed, disable this setting the next time you start Chrome
Step 9. Close Chrome
Quit Chrome by clicking the "X" in the top-right corner (Windows), or the red "x" in the top-left corner (Mac).
Method 2 of 7: Safari (iOS)
Step 1. Touch the Settings app
Cookie settings in the safari browser can be changed via the Settings app on the iOS device.
You won't be able to block cookies in Chrome for iPad or iPhone due to Apple's restrictions on third-party browsers. If you want to block cookies on the Chrome browser on your iOS device, you must do so in Incognito Mode or switch to Safari
Step 2. Touch Safari
It's next to the blue compass-shaped icon in the Settings menu.
Step 3. Touch the switch
next to "Block All Cookies".
The button is in the "Privacy & Security" section, on the right.
Step 4. Touch Block All
This red text is inside the pop-up alert. From now on, cookies for websites you visit in Safari will not be saved.
Method 3 of 7: Google Chrome (Android)
Step 1. Touch the Google Chrome menu button
It's a three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the Chrome mobile browser.
You won't be able to block cookies in Chrome for iPad or iPhone due to Apple's restrictions on third-party browsers. If you want to block Chrome browser cookies on your iOS device, you must do so in Incognito Mode or switch to Safari
Step 2. Touch Settings
You can find it at the bottom of the Chrome menu.
Step 3. Touch Site settings
This is the third option under " Advanced " in the Settings menu.
Step 4. Touch Cookies
It's next to the cookie-shaped icon in "Site settings".
Step 5. Touch the switch
next to "Cookies".
It's at the top of the Cookies menu, on the right.
Alternatively, you can block cookies for specific sites. Do this by touching Add Site Exception at the bottom of the Cookies menu. Next, enter the site you want to block under " Site URL " and touch Add in the lower right corner.
Step 6. Touch the checkbox
next to "Block third-party cookies".
This is the last option in the Cookies menu. By doing so, cookies from third parties will be blocked.
Method 4 of 7: Mozilla Firefox
Step 1. Click the Firefox menu
The icon is in the form of 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner.
Step 2. Click Options
It's next to the gear icon in the Firefox window.
Step 3. Click Privacy & Security
You'll find it next to the padlock-shaped icon in the sidebar menu on the left.
Step 4. Click the radio button next to "Custom"
This is the last option under " Enhanced Tracking Protection ".
Step 5. Click the drop-down menu next to "Cookies"
This is the first option in the " Custom " list box under " Enhanced Tracking Protection ".
Step 6. Click All Cookies (will cause websites to break)
This is the last option in the drop-down menu next to "Cookies" in the "Custom" box.
- You can also select "Block Third-Party Cookies" in the drop-down menu to allow multiple cookies.
- Alternatively, you can block certain websites by clicking Manage Permissions under "Cookies and Site Data". Enter the address of the site you want to block in the bar that says "Address of Website" and click Block.
Step 7. Click the checkbox next to "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed"
By doing so, Firefox will delete all existing cookies when you close it.
Step 8. Close Firefox
Do this by clicking the "X" icon in the top-right corner (Windows), or the red "x" icon in the top-left corner (Mac).
Method 5 of 7: Microsoft Edge
Step 1. Click or touch the …
It's a 3-dot button in the upper-right corner of the Microsoft Edge window. A menu will appear on the right.
Step 2. Click or tap Settings
You'll find it at the bottom of the menu, next to the gear-shaped icon.
Step 3. Click or touch Privacy & security
It's next to the padlock-shaped icon in the left sidebar in the Microsoft Edge menu.
Step 4. Click the drop-down menu located under "Cookies"
The place is in the middle of the "Privacy & security" menu.
Step 5. Click Block all cookies
This is the last option in the " Cookies " drop-down menu.
To block certain cookies, select "Block third-party cookies"
Method 6 of 7: Safari (Desktop Computer)
Step 1. Click the Safari menu
You can find it in the top left corner in the menu bar at the top. This menu bar will appear if the Safari window is open and active.
Step 2. Click Preferences
This is the third option in the Safari menu.
Step 3. Click the Privacy tab
The icon is blue with a hand drawn in the middle.
Step 4. Click the checkbox next to "Block all cookies"
This is the second option in the Privacy menu. From now on, Safari will not store cookies for visited sites.
Method 7 of 7: Internet Explorer
Step 1. Click the Tools menu or gear button
You can find it in the top right corner of your browser.
Press alt=""Image" if the button doesn't appear.</h3" />
Step 2. Click Internet options
This option is at the bottom of the Tools menu.
Step 3. Click the Privacy tab
This third tab is at the top of the Internet options window.
Step 4. Click the Advanced button
The button is under "Settings", on the right.
Step 5. Select Block for First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies options
There are 3 options under "First-party Cookies" and "Third-party Cookies". Click " Block " under both menus to block all cookies.
Step 6. Click the "Always allow session cookies" checkbox
It's at the bottom of the Cookies menu.
Step 7. Save your changes by clicking OK
It's in the lower right corner. From now on, Internet Explorer will no longer store cookies.
Tips
- Disabling cookies completely keeps you logged out of frequently visited sites.
- To prevent cookies for your current internet browsing from being saved, enable Incognito or Private mode in your browser. If this mode is enabled, no cookies will be stored.
