This wikiHow teaches you how to block certain websites from being accessed via Google Chrome on your computer, phone, or tablet. If you're using a computer or Android device, you can use a free app called Block Site to block unwanted sites. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can block websites by setting the Screen Time feature. However, this setting will affect all web browsers on your phone or tablet, and not just Chrome.
Step
Method 1 of 3: On Computer
Step 1. Go to the Block Site page
Block Site is a free Chrome add-on that allows you to block a specific web page or an entire website. You can even set a password so other users can't change the block list.
Step 2. Click Add to Chrome
This blue button appears at the top right of the page.
Step 3. Click Add extension to confirm
Step 4. Review the add-on's terms and click I Accept
Block Site is now installed on the computer.
The extension's basic features, including the ability to block websites, are free to use. If you are asked to subscribe to this service, click “ Skip ” in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 5. Click the Block Site icon
This shield icon appears on the top right side of the Chrome window. After that, a drop-down menu will load.
Step 6. Click the gear icon
This icon appears in the upper-right side of the Block Site window. The Block Site page will load after that.
Step 7. Enter the website
Click the "Enter a web address" field at the top of the page, then enter the address of the site you need to block.
- For example, if you want to block all content or pages from the Twitter.com domain, type in twitter.com.
- If you want to block a specific page on a website, visit the page in question, then copy the address by clicking the address bar at the top of the browser window and pressing the shortcut “ Ctrl ” + “ C ” (Windows) or “ Command ” + “ C(Mac). After the address is copied, right-click the column on the Block Site page and select “ Paste ”.
Step 8. Click the plus sign icon
This icon appears to the right of the address text field. The site will be immediately added to the list of blocked sites by the Block Site extension.
You can remove a site from the Block Site blacklist/block by clicking the red circle icon next to the site URL on the list, whenever you need to
Step 9. Click Password Protection
You can see this tab on the left side of the Block Site page.
Step 10. Turn on the password feature on Block Site
Check the "Protect your BlockSite options and the Chrome Extension page with password" box that appears at the top of the page. A list of related options will load at the bottom of the next page.
Step 11. Type in your email address
Enter a working email address in the top text field at the bottom of the page.
Make sure the email address entered is still accessible as you will need to verify the address in the next step
Step 12. Type in the password
Enter the password to lock the Block Site block list in the text field below the email address field.
Step 13. Select Save
This turquoise button appears at the bottom of the page.
Step 14. Select OK when prompted
Pending email address settings and verification will be saved.
Step 15. Verify the email address you entered
To complete the extension setup process, follow these steps:
- Open the email account you registered earlier.
- Select the email titled " Verify Blocksite " from Blocksite.
- Click the button " Verify now ” in the main body of the message. Once the email address is verified, users accessing the blocked sites will see a page notifying them that the site has been blocked.
Step 16. Let Block Site operate in incognito mode
One can bypass the Block Site extension limitation via incognito mode on Chrome. Here's how to prevent it:
- Click the menu button in the upper-right corner of the Chrome window (“ ⋮ ”).
- Choose " More tools ”.
- Choose " Extensions ”.
- Choose " DETAILS ” under the "Block Site" heading.
- Scroll through the page and click the gray "Allow in incognito" switch to enable it.
Method 2 of 3: On Android Device
Step 1. Download Block Site from Google Play Store
This free app allows you to block websites on the Android version of Chrome. After you open the Google Play Store from the page/app drawer, follow these steps:
- Select the search bar.
- Enter the blocksite and touch the button “ Go " or " Enter ”.
- Select an app called BlockSite with a reddish shield icon and a warning symbol.
- Choose " INSTALL ” under the heading " BlockSite - Block Distracting Apps and Sites ".
- Touch " ACCEPT ” when prompted.
Step 2. Select OPEN to run BlockSite
If you've closed the Play Store window, you can open BlockSite by touching its shield icon on the device's page/app drawer.
Step 3. Review the terms of use of the app and touch I ACCEPT
Step 4. Select ENABLE ACCESSIBILITY
This green button appears at the bottom of the welcome page. The accessibility settings menu (“Accessibility”) of the device will open.
Step 5. Slide the “BlockSite” switch to the on or “On” position
You may need to touch" OK " to continue. Thus, Block Site can block sites on your device.
Step 6. Select X to return to BlockSite
It's in the upper-left corner of the page that asks you to upgrade your membership. BlockSite will reopen afterwards.
Step 7. Touch the plus sign icon
This green button appears on the lower right side of the screen. You will be redirected to a page where you can block the website afterwards.
Step 8. Type in the site address
Select the text field at the top of the page and enter the address of the site you want to block (eg facebook.com).
You don't have to bother entering a complete web address. A basic address like _.com will suffice
Step 9. Touch the tick icon
This icon is displayed at the top right side of the screen. The site will be added to the Block Sites app's block list so the site can't be visited in Chrome, as well as other browsers on the device.
You can unblock a site at any time by selecting the trash can icon to the right of the site's name
Step 10. Block the app completely on Android device (optional)
If you want to temporarily block an application, touch the “ + ” at the bottom right side of the Block Site page, select the tab “ APPS ” at the top of the page, and specify the apps you need to block.
As with sites, you can unblock an app at any time by tapping the trash icon to the right of its name
Method 3 of 3: On iPhone or iPad
Step 1. Open the iPhone or iPad settings menu (“Settings”)
This menu is indicated by a gear icon on the home screen or its subfolders. If you want to block websites on the iPhone/iPad version of Chrome, you need to do the blocking from the main settings. This blocking also applies to Safari and other browsers used on the device.
Step 2. Touch Screen Time
This option is indicated by a purple hourglass icon in the second group of settings.
Step 3. Touch Continue and select the device owner
If the phone is owned by you, touch “ This is My iPhone " If the phone is owned by the child, select " This is My Child's iPhone " The Screen Time feature will be activated and allow you to block websites on the device.
Step 4. Create a Screen Time passcode if you don't already have one
If you see an option named “ Use Screen Time Passcode ” under the " Content & Privacy Restrictions " heading, touch the option, and follow the on-screen instructions to create a four-digit PIN code. If you see the option “ Change Screen Time Passcode ”, you already have a passcode and there is no need to create a new one.
Step 5. Touch Content & Privacy Restrictions
This option is indicated by a red icon with a warning symbol.
Enter the Screen Time passcode when prompted
Step 6. Touch the “Content & Privacy Restrictions” switch to enable it
If the switch is already in the active or “On” position, move on to the next step.
Step 7. Touch Content Restrictions
This option is in the first settings group.
Step 8. Touch Web Content
It's in the middle of the menu.
Step 9. Select Limit Adult Websites
This option allows you to block certain websites.
Step 10. Touch Add Website under the "Never Allow" heading
This option is the second "Add Website" option on the page.
Step 11. Enter the URL of the site you want to block
For example, if you want to block Facebook, type in www.facebook.com. Touch done ” when finished to add the site to the block list and return to the previous page.
