Witch costumes are always a trend for Halloween celebrations. If you're planning to dress like a witch this year or if your child wants to be a witch, you can make your own costumes to save money or just for fun. Making your own witch hat will give you the opportunity to customize this important part of the costume however you want and you don't even need to know how to sew it!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making a Cone
Step 1. Prepare the equipment
Making a wizard hat is easy and only requires a few supplies. Before you start, you will need:
- black craft foam
- rope
- scissors
- wire
- duct tape
- tape
- decorations such as feathers of birds or faux mammal fur
- decorations such as plastic spiders, buttons, or butterfly ribbons
Step 2. Measure and cut the foam into a cone shape
Take the yarn and hold the ends at the corners of the craft foam. Then, stretch the string a few centimeters with a pencil in hand. Use the string and pencil to trace the bottom of the cone. You can make the cone as high as you want.
- When you've finished tracing a curved line for the bottom of the cone, use scissors to cut along this line. When you're done, the result is a triangular foam with a circular base.
- You can also use an Exacto knife to make more precise edges when cutting, but this is not necessary.
Step 3. Cut the wire
Next, cut the wire slightly shorter than the highest part of the cone. You can measure the cone from the bottom to the end to see how much wire to cut or hold the wire along the cone and cut the wire.
Step 4. Glue the wire to the center of the cone with tape
Place the wire in the center of the cone, as if the cone was divided in half by the wire. One end of the wire is at the pointed end of the cone and the other end is at the bottom of the cone. Then, take a piece of duct tape that is longer than the wire and tape it along the length of the wire.
- Make sure there is some space between the end of the wire and the edge of the cone when gluing the tape. Otherwise, the wire may pierce the top of the hat or puncture the head when wearing it.
- Trim off any excess tape after the wire is secured to the cone. No plaster should extend beyond the edge of the foam.
Step 5. Re-adhere the duct tape to an edge of the cap
You'll need to glue a few pieces of duct tape to the edges of the hat to secure the edges and form a cone. Take a piece of duct tape and tape it to the flat edge of the cone and then tape it again with duct tape on top so that it overlaps slightly.
- Then, fold the other edge of the cone and press the duct tape into place to secure the edge of the cone.
- Make sure the wire and duct tape are on the inside of the cone when tightening the edges of the cone.
Method 2 of 3: Making the Hat's Brim
Step 1. Measure and cut the brim of the hat
To make the brim of the hat, you will need to spread out a piece of craft foam and hold a piece of string in the middle. Then, holding the pencil and the other end of the string with the other hand, draw a circle. This circle will be the brim for the hat cone, so make sure the brim is big enough.
Once the brim of the hat is measured, cut along the edge of the circle you traced. Try to cut along this line as evenly as possible as uneven edges can be seen
Step 2. Use a hot glue gun or a hairdryer to even out the brim of the hat
When you have finished trimming the brim of the hat, place it on the table again and use a hot glue gun or hairdryer to smooth out the curled brim. Once the brim of the hat is flat enough, you don't have to worry about flattening it again.
You can also place some heavy books on top and let them sit for a few hours or overnight to even out the brim of the hat
Step 3. Cut the center of the brim of the hat
Next, fold it in half so the edges are even. Make a cut in the center of the brim of the hat and then move forward. Keep cutting until a small circle is created in the center of the brim of the hat. Then, cut four slits on the inner edge of the brim to make it more flexible.
Note that the inner loop should be large enough to fit over the head, but not larger than the head as it can be too loose when worn
Step 4. Check to make sure the brim of the hat fits snugly on the head
Try wearing the brim of the hat on your head before continuing to make sure it fits perfectly. If it feels right, then you can adjust it. If it's too loose, you'll need to make a new brim with new craft foam.
Method 3 of 3: Finishing the Hat
Step 1. Use tape to cover the cone line
Before attaching the cone to the brim of the hat, you can cover the outline of the cone with a piece of black tape. Use hot glue to secure the tape to the cone.
- Make sure the hot glue is completely heated before attaching the tape to the cone.
- Hold the hot glue gun close to the foam while applying the hot glue. Otherwise, the glue may partially dry before the tape can be secured to the cone.
Step 2. Glue the cone to the brim of the hat with glue
You will also need to use hot glue to attach the cone to the brim of the hat. To attach the brim of the hat to the cone with glue, apply hot glue to the bottom of the cone and press the cone into the brim of the hat.
- Make sure the cone is positioned in the center of the top brim of the hat when it is fixed with hot glue.
- If you want to embellish your hat, you can also attach some feathers of fowl or faux mammal feathers where the cones and brim of the hat meet. Use only hot glue to secure the embellishments to the base of the cone.
Step 3. Bend the cone as desired
Once the hat is finished and the glue is dry, you can shape the cone to the appearance you want by bending it slightly. The wire inside the cone will allow you to create the shape by bending or squeezing the hat cone.
Try bending the cone in two or three places for a worn appearance
Step 4. Add another touch
You can also enhance the appearance of the wizard's hat with other items, such as a plastic spider, butterfly tape, or some buttons. Choose items that will complement your costume.
