There are times when everyone wants to dress up as a pirate. And no pirate costume is complete without a suitable hat. You can make a pirate hat out of anything, including newsprint, cardboard, or even an old cowboy hat. You can even make one using wrapping paper and a bowl from the kitchen!
Step
Method 1 of 4: Making a Pirate Hat out of Newspaper
Step 1. Find a piece of newsprint
Unfold the newspaper and spread it out on a flat surface. Make sure you have enough space to work.
Thick newsprint is useful for big pirate hats. If you prefer a smaller hat, cut it about 0.6 cm from one side
Step 2. Fold your paper in half horizontally
Make sure the corners meet each other so that your hat looks nice and neat. Press with your finger along the crease to make it visible.
If you work with children, tell them to fold like "hamburgers" so they can fold properly
Step 3. Bring the ends to the middle
Take the top right corner of the paper and bring it to the center to form a triangle. Do the same with the other end.
- Now you have 2 triangular shapes, with a horizontal line in the middle of the paper. For a good hat, keep the bottom edge straight. Make a nice fold when you've done everything the way you want.
- Add adhesive to the triangle if the triangle starts to open.
Step 4. Fold the bottom of the paper up
You should now have a piece of paper that is starting to look like a pirate hat, except for the 2 lower lids. Fold one part of the lower lid down from the end of the triangle and apply adhesive to secure it.
Twist the hat and do the same for the rest of the lower lid
Step 5. Add decorations to the finished pirate hat
Your pirate hat is almost done. One thing that is lacking is to provide decoration. Draw a skull and crossbones on the hat, or just print and stick it.
You can draw a skull and crossed bones on cardboard. Cut out the design and stick it to your hat
Method 2 of 4: Making a Hat out of Cardboard
Step 1. Prepare your workspace
To make this pirate hat you will need the following materials:
- Black cardboard
- Scissors
- Glue
- Example of a pirate hat
- A few sheets of white paper
- Pen, pencil, marker or crayon
Step 2. Create or print a sample pirate hat
You can find examples of pirate hats from the internet, or you can draw them yourself on cardboard. If you need to make several hats, consider drawing samples on different cardboard.
If you draw your own example, you are free to determine the shape of the pirate hat
Step 3. Copy the cap sample onto the cardboard
If you're printing it online, place it on cardboard and trace the shape of the hat. Make two copies of the pirate hat shape.
Step 4. Cut out two pirate hat shapes
Make sure your cutouts are neat. When you're done cutting, line the two together. Make sure the shape is the same.
Step 5. Draw a skull shape and crossed bones on white paper
Cut out the design and stick it on your hat.
- Draw a skull face and crossbones using a marker. If you are doing this with children, let them try to draw it.
- If you don't have paper, you can draw the skull and bones directly on the hat.
Step 6. Finish making the hat
Glue the top sides. Don't stick to the bottom of the hat or you won't be able to use it.
Allow a moment for the glue to dry before trying on the hat
Method 3 of 4: Making a Three Corner Hat
Step 1. Gather your gear
To make a triangular hat, you will need the following materials:
- Pencil
- Wire
- Scissors
- Glue
- A bowl as big as your head
- Ruler or other parallel object
- Brown paper wrap or shopping paper bag
Step 2. Make the lining paper string for the bowl
Cut the paper 0.6 cm wide, which can wrap around the rim of the bowl an additional 5 to 7.5 cm so that the strip extends over the bowl.
Don't worry if you have to glue the 2 smaller pieces of paper together to form the coating
Step 3. Cut the rest of the paper
You will need enough paper to make two large cuts for the top of the hat and the edges. Cut the first square about 40 cm and the second about 60 cm.
If you want to add leather to the hat, soak the paper strips in water and let them soak. Remove the paper from the water and straighten it to dry. Be careful not to tear the paper if you try this method
Step 4. Create the shape of the hat
Place the bowl upside down on the table and place the smaller square of paper on top. Begin to shape the paper by carefully pressing it over the bowl and around the edges.
Step 5. Add coating
Once you've pressed the paper against the bowl, thread a 5cm strip of paper string around the bottom of the bowl to form the cap.
You can use a lot of glue to hold the paper string to the hat
Step 6. Cut off the excess paper
When the glue is dry, trim off any excess paper that is under the lining strap. Leave some to tuck under the hat bowl.
- For easier cutting, slide the bowl over the edge of the table and rotate the bowl as you cut the paper.
- When you've cut off the excess paper, remove the bowl. Try on a hat by putting it over your head. If the hat is too big, bend it to follow the head and add some lining paper straps for more support. If the cap is too small, you will have to make a new one with another bowl.
Step 7. Prepare the edges
Take a large piece of paper and draw a straight line down from the center of the box. Mark at a point about 52 cm from the bottom of the paper. Draw a slanted line from the mark to the bottom corner of the paper to form a triangle.
- When you're done measuring the triangle, all you have to do is cut it.
- Put a mark in the middle of each triangular line. Drag a line to the corner of the triangle to make two smaller triangles.
- Using the bowl as a measure, draw a circle in the center of the triangle. Now you have a circle with 6 small triangles in the middle of the large triangle.
- Draw three lines on the circle that cut the 6 triangles in half, so there are now 12 triangles.
- Cut the triangles on the inside so they rise to the top, but stay on the paper. Fold it up until it looks like a crown.
Step 8. Glue the edges to the hat
Glue all 12 triangles and glue them inside the hat. You may have to use a lot of glue to get the triangles together tightly. Don't worry if it's messy, because this part is located inside the hat and won't be visible when the hat is finished.
Let the glue dry before continuing
Step 9. Make the edges rounded
Fold each end from the edge to the center of the hat. The sharp end of each edge should touch the hat. Make a crease in each existing crease and cut off the sharp edges.
- Round the ends by cutting off the straight edges that are left from cutting off the edges. Now you have three triangles with rounded sides on the edges of the hat.
- Wrap the pencil around the end of the rounded edge and roll it toward the hat. When you let go of the pencil, you will get a slightly curled edge.
- You can also roll each edge if you like. Do this to add character to the hat. Use a pencil and roll in the opposite direction.
- At this point, you should be able to see the shape of the pirate hat.
Step 10. Connect the edges of the hat to the center of the hat
Wrap the wire around the part of the eraser on the pencil and twist it a few times. You will get a loop and two ends of the wire. Remove the wire from the pencil. Make this circle three times.
Align the edge of the hat higher than the hat and make a hole in the hat. Insert the end of the wire into the hole. Turn the hat over and flatten the two ends of the wire so that the edges of the hat stick together. Do this for the other edge
Step 11. Decorate your hat
Now you have a pirate hat with three solid corners. Add a skull and crossbones if you like, or some buttons. You can decorate the strap of the hat, even if it will be covered by the rest of the hat.
Glue a few buttons on the hem for a real pirate hat touch
Method 4 of 4: Making a Pirate Hat out of a Cowboy Hat
Step 1. Find a hat from your local grocery store
Choose a wide-brimmed cowboy hat. Choose a dark color, such as dark blue or black.
- However, this color is really up to you. If you want a light colored hat, take it!
- Choose a flexible material. A suitable hat is one made of flannel or velvet.
Step 2. Sew or use a stapler on each side of the crown
This will pull the edges of the hat up front and back, like a three-cornered pirate hat.
Step 3. Decorate the hat
Look for patchwork with skull and crossbones designs at a craft store. You can also cut out embellishments from old T-shirts.
Sew a skull and crossbones symbol on the front of the hat if it's made of fabric. If you are using a patch, follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to attach it
Tips
- Earrings and rings can be complementary jewelry for pirate costumes.
- Make a blindfold out of black cloth or thick black paper. Cut it into a blindfold shape and attach the black flexible rope with glue or a stapler.
