A mattress that shifts on its own can interfere with your sleep at night. If your mattress slides off the couch, the top won't stay still, or the frame keeps sliding across the slippery floor, there are a variety of ways you can use it, ranging from using certain accessories or outsmarting the mattress yourself to solve the problem. In no time, you can sleep comfortably without any more disturbances!
Step
Method 1 of 3: Keeping the Mattress from Moving
Step 1. Purchase a non-slip mattress to place between the mattress and the bed
There are many mattress shops that sell PVC rubber rough mats to place between the mattress and the bed so that the mattress does not shift. Buy a product model that matches the size of your mattress and bed, then install it between the two to solve the problem.
- If you can't find a base large enough for your mattress at home, combine two smaller ones.
- The non-slip base for mattresses is usually so thin that you won't feel any difference when you place it under the mattress.
Step 2. Purchase a rubber mat that is usually installed under the rug as a cheaper alternative
Buy a special rug mat that fits the size of the mattress. Cut as needed if the length exceeds the length of the mattress.
Some non-slip mats are sold as multipurpose products for mattresses and rugs. So, this product may not be considered as an alternative. However, buying it can save you money
Step 3. Use velcro strips to make your own non-slip base
Buy a velcro strip, which is a layer of velcro that has adhesive on one side. Cut this product according to the length of the mattress, then stick it on the surface of the bed or mattress frame so that your mattress sticks firmly.
- Make sure you peel off both sides of the velcro (also known as the “hook” side and “loop” side) to keep it firmly attached to the bed and mattress!
- You can also use double-sided carpet tape instead of velcro strips.
Step 4. Tuck something on the side of the bed and mattress to solve this problem quickly
Sometimes, the mattress shifts because it doesn't fit the bed. Try to tuck a towel or other soft object between the bed and the mattress so it doesn't move again.
This is a great way to keep the mattress from shifting for a while. However, this method makes you have to adjust the wedge between the bed and the mattress. So, this is not a permanent solution
Step 5. Replace the bed with a more suitable frame if the mattress continues to shift
Observe the bed and see if the frame is too big for your mattress, or the sides are too shallow to hold the mattress. Buy a new bed that will hold the mattress more tightly if the mattress continues to shift after you've tried various other methods.
Beds equipped with a headboard and footboard can also hold the mattress so it doesn't shift
Step 6. Purchase a single-sided mattress as a last resort
Most mattresses have 2 sides that appear to be the same. This means that one side that is not used to sleep is very easy to shift. Buy a mattress that has one side to sleep on and one flat side that faces down so that it can reduce slippage when the mattress is slept on.
One-sided mattresses sometimes also feel more comfortable than two-sided mattresses because the top is specially designed to provide maximum comfort while sleeping
Method 2 of 3: Preventing the Mattress from Shifting
Step 1. Place the sheets tightly on the top of the mattress
The top mattress (topper) will move more easily if the sheets are loose. Buy sheets that are tight for your mattress and put them on so the top of the mattress doesn't move.
Step 2. Use straps or straps to secure the top sheet and mattress
Clamp the straps at the bottom ends at the corners of the sheets. Tie a strap under the mattress, then tie it to the opposite corner.
The bed sheets will look like an "X" under the mattress
Step 3. Secure the top mattress with safety pins as a less expensive alternative
Install at least 5 safety pins on each side of the top mattress. This will help distribute the pressure and keep the mattress from moving.
You can also use safety pins to secure the sheets so that the top of the mattress is more stable
Step 4. Use black duct tape or adhesive spray to secure the top of the mattress if it still slides a lot
Tape the corners of the mattress with duct tape, or spray the adhesive liquid all over the back of the upper mattress, then attach it to the mattress at the bottom. Make sure you also use tight sheets.
Remember, if you use adhesive spray, there will be residue left on the surface of the mattress when you try to remove the top of the mattress. Duct tape can also leave marks on the mattress if it's been affixed for a long time
Method 3 of 3: Preventing the Bed from Shifting on a Slippery Floor
Step 1. Place a small rug under the mattress
Buy a small rug that is slightly larger than your mattress. Slide the bed, then place the rug on the floor. After that, return the mattress to its original position.
The thicker the rug you use, the more traction your mattress will get
Step 2. Place furniture legs in each bottom corner of the mattress frame if you don't want to use a rug
Purchase furniture legs that are large enough to attach to the legs of the mattress frame. Lift the mattress frame, then install the furniture legs one by one.
You can buy furniture legs at a furniture store or home supply store
Step 3. Tuck a rubber shelf under the mattress legs to replace the furniture legs
Cut the rubber shelving base slightly larger than the bottom of the legs of your mattress frame. Figure out the mattress, then tuck the mat under each leg.
