How nice it is to wrap around you in a towel after showering! But not all towels are the same. Even towels that look very soft in the store, can be damaged after 1-2 washes. However, with a trained eye, you can tell which towels are high quality.
Step
Step 1. Understand what makes a high quality towel
To begin with, towels serve different purposes than different fabrics, whether they dry your body or your dishes. Things to remember are:
- Absorption is created by maximizing the surface area. Cotton towels are good for hands and body, whereas cloth towels are great for dishes and glassware.
- Terry was the most absorbent. This is an ideal towel for hands and body because it loops on both sides, increasing the surface area.
- The combination of cloth, cotton, and rayon is great for drying dishes. This helps increase the evaporation ratio.
- Silk cloth works well for drying glass, and dishes where there should be no trace of cloth in the drying result.
-
The flax fabric is very absorbent and strong. It's bacteria resistant, and won't leave any fabric residue on glassware, absorbing 20% of its weight in water.
Step 2. Pay attention to the content of the towel cloth
High quality towels are usually made of long, fine fibers. Some of the more expensive towels are made from Brazilian or Egyptian fibers. Although hard to find, Supima cotton is a great choice for long-fiber cotton grown in the United States.
Step 3. Test yourself
At the store, you can see for yourself whether the towel fits your needs and wants.
- Look closely. Does the fiber stand like grass in the garden? This is a good sign. If they are flat, this is not very good.
- Feel it. Is it soft? Or rude? If the towel is soft, like velvet, this is good quality. If this towel is rough, like canvas, it is of poor quality.
-
Check size. If you are large or tall, choose one that is larger than your normal towel size, which will make the drying process less expensive.
Step 4. Shop around
- Find the best deals. Decide how much you are willing to pay. If you want the best quality, of course it costs more. On the plus side, the nicer your towels are, the longer they will last, so you can save money in the long run.
-
Look for towels that are the same color as your bathroom decor. Always remember that color will always fade. White towels can always be bleached if you want them to shine again.
Tips
- Look at the different sizes of towels – a normal size might be okay for a normal sized person, but a bigger person will certainly not fit. A good towel is 34" X 68". It will feel comfortable to wrap your whole body!
- GSM (grams per square meter) is a big factor – anything higher than 550gsm is a good towel. Check this stack: 16s single, 12s single, 21s double with good base stack, can give you comfortable feeling and good durability.
- Towels dried in a dryer are softer than those dried outside in the sun.
Warning
- Always wash new towels before use. Dyes, excess chemicals, etc. may still be left on your towels.
- While bleach can soften towels, it can also cause them to spoil more quickly. If using fabric softener for bath towels, it is recommended to separate the kitchen towels to make them last longer. Fabric towels that have been washed in fabric softener can also leave stains on glassware.
