If your throat is itchy or inflamed, of course you want to immediately relieve it. A burning throat makes it difficult for you to swallow or eat. In addition to over-the-counter pain relievers, lozenges, and throat sprays are great ways to treat a sore throat before going to the doctor. After the pain subsides in a short time, consult a doctor to find out the cause.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Coping with a Burning Throat or Sore Throat
Step 1. Try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever
One easy solution is to take painkillers, such as acetaminophen (paracetamol) or ibuprofen. Follow the directions on the package for how many times you can take it.
Anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen will be more effective than acetaminophen because they reduce irritation and swelling. However, acetaminophen is still effective for reducing pain
Step 2. Eat ice cubes
Chilled ice will soothe a burning throat, especially by numbing the affected area with the cold.
You can try other ways of handling, such as eating ice cream or frozen fruit. Even iced tea or cold water can help soothe your throat
Step 3. Try lozenges
Lozenges are available over-the-counter and can relieve sore throats. Be sure to take sugar-free lozenges if you have to keep your sugar intake in check.
You can take lozenges as often as you need them. Also, try lozenges that contain eucalyptus or menthol, as they are soothing
Step 4. Use a throat spray
If you don't like taking lozenges, you can use a throat spray. Sprays like Chloroplasts can reduce pain and contain antibiotics so they can help you deal with a sore throat.
To use it, open your mouth wide. Stick out your tongue. Aim the spray to the back of your mouth, then spray your throat
Step 5. Don't eat spicy and hot food
Very spicy foods can make throat irritation worse. Make sure you don't eat or drink very hot food when your throat is sore. Blow the food to cool. Add ice, or stir before eating.
Step 6. Keep yourself hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day when you have a sore throat. If you are dehydrated, your throat becomes dry and the irritation gets worse. Just drink water. You can also drink tea or coffee, especially since warm water--not hot--can soothe the throat.
- Men should drink about 13 degrees of water a day, while women should drink about 9 glasses. You may even need to drink more when you have a sore throat.
- To further soothe the throat, add a spoonful of honey in your tea or coffee.
Step 7. Make the air moist
A dry throat can cause irritation, making your dry throat worse. Try using a humidifier if your house is too dry. If the air in your home is too dry, your throat will hurt even more.
However, you can get the same effect by taking a very warm bath, and breathing in while in the hot steam. Close the bathroom before starting to open the shower. When you turn on the shower, first set it to a very hot temperature so that the steam fills the bathroom. Change the setting to a more comfortable temperature before you enter the bathroom. As you shower, take deep breaths, letting the steam go down your throat
Step 8. Avoid smoking lounges
Cigarette smoke, even cigarette smoke, can irritate the throat. Avoid being around secondhand smoke until your throat heals.
Step 9. Use a new toothbrush
Over time bacteria can build up on your toothbrush. Your throat can be infected again by bacteria if you use the same toothbrush for too long.
Bacteria enter your body through your gums, especially if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth
Step 10. Consult the prescription with your doctor
Your doctor is the best source of information for determining first line of defense. Often, you may need a course of antibiotics to help with a sore throat, depending on the cause.
Part 2 of 3: Using Natural Medicine
Step 1. Try using apple cider vinegar
Mix one tablespoon each of honey and apple cider vinegar into warm water. Stir well. Drink the mixture.
- Some people say this remedy helps relieve sore throat because it kills bacteria. Honey can relieve pain.
- You can also gargle with apple cider vinegar. Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with 1/2 cup of water to gargle. No need to use honey.
Step 2. Gargle with salt water
Briefly heat one cup of water. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt to it, then stir. Use salt water to gargle to help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Salt water can act as an antiseptic, preventing germs from multiplying in your throat. Salt water can also help get rid of phlegm.
- Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in warm water and use it to gargle.
Step 3. Make tea from marshmallow root
You can get marshmallow root at online stores or natural medicine stores. Place a teaspoon of marshmallow root in a cup, then pour over boiling water. Let the roots soak in hot water for half to an hour.
- Strain the dregs. Drink the potion.
- Check with your doctor if you have diabetes or other blood sugar disorders, because this herb can change blood sugar levels.
Step 4. Drink licorice root tea
Some people find their throats relieved with licorice tea root. You can get these tea blends at the store, or you can mix your own.
- To make this mixture, you will need 1 cup of licorice root (chopped), 1/2 cup of cinnamon (finely chopped), 2 tablespoons of cloves (whole), and 1/2 cup of chamomile flowers. You can get these natural ingredients at grocery stores. Store in an airtight container.
- Pour 2.5 cups of water into the pot. Add 3 tablespoons of tea to the water. Bring the tea to a boil, then let it simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes. Strain the dregs, then drink.
Part 3 of 3: Knowing the Cause of Burning Throat
Step 1. Check if you have heartburn (a burning sensation in the stomach due to excess stomach acid)
Heartburn can trigger a burning sensation in the throat because stomach acid rises up into the esophagus.
- Another symptom of heartburn is a burning sensation in your chest that gets worse as you stretch. Usually, this problem arises after you eat. The next day you may be hoarse or have difficulty swallowing.
- Your mouth may also taste sour or metallic if you have heartburn.
- Sit up straight. If you sleep in bed and feel the acid from heartburn in the back of your throat, the first thing to do is to sit up straight. Drink water to help clear the throat. In addition, you can also increase the slope of your bed.
- Over-the-counter antacids are first aid for heartburn. Antacids help neutralize acid in the esophagus and stomach. The drug can work immediately. Antacids won't make your sore throat better, but they can stop the acid that's just entering your throat.
- Patients whose pain does not go away and feel uncomfortable should consult a doctor.
Step 2. Watch for burning mouth syndrome
If any part of your mouth, apart from your throat, feels burning, you may have burning mouth syndrome. Burning mouth syndrome can be caused by other problems such as hormones, allergies, infections, and not getting the right vitamin intake. However, with burning mouth primary syndrome, doctors are still not sure what causes the problem.
Maybe your mouth is dry too, or your mouth tastes weird. Talk to your doctor and/or dentist if you experience any of these symptoms. This can be caused by facial neuropathy (facial nerve disorder)
Step 3. Check your body temperature
If you have a fever, you may have a throat infection caused by the Streptococcus bacteria. Other symptoms of a throat infection include white spots on the back of the roof of the mouth, fever, headache, and rash. No cough seen in throat infection.
- If you suspect a throat infection due to Streptococcus bacteria, go to the doctor. Infections due to Streptococcus bacteria can sometimes develop into tonsillitis, which is an infection of the tonsils. Treatment includes the use of antibiotics.
- Fever followed by swollen lymph nodes (swollen lymph nodes) and sore throat may be symptoms of infectious mononucleosis, see a doctor if you experience such symptoms. You will be tested with a monospot test and your doctor will see the presence of abnormal white blood cells (atypical lymphocytes) in your blood test. Avoid sports that can cause rupture of the spleen (splenic rupture) due to vigorous activity.
Step 4. Watch how long you have a sore throat
If your sore throat hasn't gone away even after you've had treatment, it may be a sign of something more serious, such as throat cancer. Consult a doctor if your sore throat lasts more than two weeks, especially if you have taken a course of antibiotics.
Check if you have excess weight loss associated with cancer
Step 5. Look for other causes
Sore throat and burning throat can also be caused by allergies and smoking. The best way to help with strep throat due to this cause is to quit smoking or control allergies by taking antihistamines.
