Step 1. Choose a username that is easy to remember
Choose a username that is easy for others to remember, avoid using a lot of numbers (eg rockergurl555666.tumblr.com) because people won't remember it, or are interested.
If possible, choose a clever or quirky username that people will be curious about, or link to a theme for your tumblr (if you're creating a Teen Wolf fandom blog for example, use something that refers to your fandom [e.g. Allison is your favorite character, create something that link it]), or choose a mythological type username if you're interested in mythology (especially something lesser known, since it's unlikely that the username has been taken)

There are many options available, and you'll need to choose a specific theme for Tumblr (eg what a blog will look like) as well as what the specific focus of your Tumblr will be.

Step 1. Find your niche
Some popular personal Tumblrs are usually people who are already popular, such as writers, actors, or comic artists. Even some fan fiction writers can become popular thanks to their writing. They still maintain their personal blog that has thousands of followers (though they tend to reblog and write about certain fandoms).
- Think about your interests: you can write about dance, photography, art, writing, social issues, fandom (books, movies, tv shows), etc.. These are all very different sections, so you have to decide which one to choose for become popular.

- Pay attention to what they write. Are there a lot of text posts (that contain social issues, or what's popular on tv shows, or poetry)? Do they share personal things? Are they funny (humor is something that can lift popularity)? If they write a text post, is it long and verbose, or short and to the point? It really depends on your niche, and what types of posts are most searched for.

Look for people who are popular in your niche. Don't just ask them to promote you to their followers, ask questions and engage yourself with them on a more personal level. Frequently, popular people on Tumblr post small surveys of things like their favorite fictional character, their first kiss, or the food they eat the most. This is a way to get to know them and allow them to get to know you.

Of course, if the person you're promoting doesn't have a large following, your success rate at becoming popular isn't great.
- The double promo is basically a regular promo with two people running the event. If you follow both of them, you have a chance to be promoted by both of them, which could reach more potential followers.
- A solo promotion is when you are the only one being promoted. This can happen if you become friends with a popular person on Tumblr who talks about you on their blog, or recommends you to become a follower.

One of the keys to being popular on Tumblr is having an original blog. It sounds cliché, but this is the truth. The post that was spread on Tumblr was originally an original post, so everyone wanted to reblog it. Write original posts, anything that has to do with your niche subject.
- You can create original text posts. You could talk about TV shows or books, or bad literature. Anything related to your niche. You write down your opinions and ideas for others to see. There may be people who don't agree with your ideas, but they will still be interested so that other people will also see and be interested. (This doesn't mean you have to say something controversial and then say, "This is just my opinion." Be polite.)

There's no quick way to become popular on Tumblr, unless it happens very rarely. Connect with many people, and you will get more followers.

- Make sure you're active or add the post to the queue. This will keep your Tumblr up to date.
- Post/Blog back to express yourself! You don't have to post things that don't fit!
