Bleaching denim is an excellent way to customize your own style, as well as saving money on the latest fashions. With just a few tools you normally have at home, you can create an ombre or bright white look for your denim shorts or trousers. Learn how to bleach shorts at home.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Buy Denim Clothing
Step 1. Find denim shorts that are right for you
If you want to adjust the length, you should do that first.
- As an alternative, you can also make trousers from cotton pants (jeans). You can cut the length as needed or cut it and make an overlay.
- The darker your denim, the better the color gradation will be. The ombre style is generally darker on the top then slowly fades to a lighter white on the bottom.
Step 2. Try on your shorts first before changing the color
If you want an ombre look, draw a line with a non-permanent marker at the start and end points of your fade.
Part 2 of 4: Workplace
Step 1. Find a plastic container for the bleach and water solution
Changing the color of your shorts in a container outside is better than doing it in the sink indoors. It is safer, with more air circulation and reduces the chance of accidental contact with the skin
Step 2. Place the plastic container outside the house
Make sure it is out of reach of children or pets.
Step 3. Put on rubber gloves
Fill the container halfway with a 1:1 solution of water and bleach.
Step 4. Add a little laundry soap
This will prevent the appearance of a yellow tint in the bleached area. Use your gloves to mix it up.
Part 3 of 4: Changing the Color of the Shorts
Step 1. Clamp your shorts on a trouser hanger
You can attach it to something so it doesn't fall all the way into the container. You don't need to use hangers if you want to soak your entire shorts in bleach.
Step 2. Soak the entire shorts in the bleach solution
If you want to try the ombre coloring pattern, soak 2/3 of the shorts in the solution, then gently pull them out of the bowl during your soaking time
Step 3. Leave it for 2-12 hours
The soaking time will depend on how dark the denim was before bleaching and how bright you want the shorts to be after bleaching.
Step 4. To bleach the shorts to light, you will need about 8-12 hours
Step 5. Check the shorts frequently
You should be able to see the color change and adjust accordingly.
Part 4 of 4: Rinsing and Final Stage
Step 1. Pull the shorts out of the water
Rinse in the sink. Place the shorts in the washing machine on the normal setting.
Step 2. Dry as usual
Step 3. Consider dyeing your bleached jeans a different color
Purchase textile dye at a craft store.
Step 4. Mix the dye according to the directions on the package
Then, use a clean plastic container to soak the bleached shorts in the new color.
