The Apple iPod Nano battery must be recharged after 8-12 hours of use. You can connect the device to a computer or to an electrical outlet via an adapter to charge the battery.

Method 1 of 2: Recharging with Computer

Step 1. Find the USB cable to charge the battery

This cable is part of the purchase package for the iPod Nano. If you lose your cable, you can buy a cable at Apple.com, or buy a generic cable at most electronics/office stores.

The first to third generation iPod Nanos may include a FireWire cable that can also be used to charge the iPod battery. Your computer must have a FireWire port that has more than 4 pins

Step 2. Turn on the computer

The computer must have an empty USB port.

Step 5. Make sure the computer is on for 1-4 hours

Charging the iPod Nano battery fully takes 4 hours, and charging the iPod Nano to 80 percent takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

iPod will stop charging if the computer is turned off or in "standby" mode. Open the laptop so that the laptop is active longer

Step 6. Sync iPod while charging

iTunes will appear when you connect your iPod, and you can choose to sync or download updates.

If your iPod Nano is set to sync or update automatically whenever it is connected to a computer, the sync/update will take place immediately.
If your iPod has been set to auto-sync and you don't want to do it, you may want to use the power adapter charging method.

Step 4. Watch your iPod Nano screen

The screen will say “Charging, please wait.” If your iPod doesn't charge, you may have connected the adapter incorrectly.

Step 5. Charge the battery for 1-4 hours

Apple states that you don't need to discharge the battery and charge it fully to keep the battery healthy. Lithium batteries, unlike nickel-cadmium batteries, do not require this process.

Tips

If you're using the latest iPod nano (5th generation) and a new Apple computer, you can purchase a Lightning to 30-pin charging cable. Apple states that recharging via Lightning is faster than recharging via USB.
Your iPod battery performs optimally in 0-35 degrees Celsius, especially at room temperature.
If you don't use your iPod regularly, you'll still need to charge it, at least once a month. iPod continues to use battery power even when not in use.
