This wikiHow teaches you how to charge the iPod Shuffle. To charge, you'll need a charging cable and a power source, such as a power socket or USB port on your computer.

Step 1. Turn on the battery status light
This process will differ depending on the iPod model used:
- “ 4th generation ” – Press the VoiceOver button twice.
- “ 3rd/2nd generation ” – Turn off the iPod, then turn it back on.
- “ 1st generation ” – Press the battery level button on the back of the device.
Step 2. Check the battery level
For iPod Shuffle 3rd-, 2nd-, and 1st-generation models, there is an LED light on the same side of the device as the headphone jack. The remaining battery will depend on the color displayed by the lamp:
- Green – Battery remaining 50 to 100 percent (4th/3rd generation models); 31 to 100 percent (2nd generation model); filled "full" (1st generation model).
- Orange – Battery remaining 25 to 49 percent (4th/3rd generation models); 10 to 30 percent (2nd generation model); "weak" (1st generation model).
- Red – Less than 25 percent remaining battery (4th/3rd generation model); less than 10 percent (2nd generation model); "very weak" (1st generation model).
- Red, flashing – Less than 1 percent remaining battery (3rd generation model only).
- The lights don't turn on – The battery runs out. The iPod cannot be used until you charge it for about an hour.
Step 3. Connect the charging cable to a power source
Plug the cable plug into the power socket. Now, the end of the cable charger (similar to the headphone jack) you can use on the device.
- Alternatively, you can separate the cord from the power plug by pulling on the square connector at the bottom of the cord. After that, you can plug it into the USB port that is usually found on almost all computers
- If you want to use a USB port instead of a power socket, you'll need a USB 3 port. This port has a symbol that looks like an inverted trident on the side.
Step 4. Make sure the resource is active
If you're using a USB connection, for example, the computer you're using must be on.
The same goes for the USB port or the AC unit on the car
Step 5. Connect the other end of the charging cable to the iPod shuffle device
Plug the other end of the charger into the headphone port on the bottom of iPod Shuffle. After that, the device will be charged immediately.
Step 6. Wait for about an hour
Charging to 80 percent takes about 2 hours for iPod Shuffle. However, you need to wait for about 4 hours for the charging to reach 100 percent.
- iPod Shuffle can be used after one hour of charging.
- You don't need to turn off the device when you want to charge it.
Tips
- USB keyboards and USB hubs without power (eg those attached to monitors) generally don't have USB ports with sufficient power to charge iPods. If you connect the device to a port with low or empty power, iPod Shuffle won't charge. Meanwhile, the USB ports on a computer or a powered USB hub generally have enough power to charge the iPod Shuffle.
- Many modern USB ports with charging capability are marked by a lightning symbol next to them.
- A standard power socket or USB port is considered safe to charge an iPod.
Warning
- If you're using a computer to charge your iPod, make sure it's set not to turn off or “sleep” automatically.
- While they may look similar, you can't use the iPod Shuffle 2nd generation power adapter cable on the 3rd/4th generation iPod Shuffle.
