Want to evolve Clamperl into something a little more useful? With the right items and friends to swap with, you can evolve Clamperl into one of two very powerful Pokémon. It can be a little difficult to get the items you need, especially in older versions of the game. See Step 1 below to get your Clamperl to evolve as soon as possible.

Step 1. Decide if you evolve it into Huntail or Gorebyss
When you evolve Clamperl, you can choose between the two Pokémon depending on the item you're using. Both are water type Pokémon. Gorebyss is more focused on special attacks, while Huntail is better at physical attacks. Take a look at the stats and decide which one suits your team better.
In newer versions of the game Pokémon, you can find both items needed for Clamperl's evolution, so it will be easy for you to get both
Step 2. Get the Deep Sea Tooth or Deep Sea Scale
The Deep Sea Tooth is needed to evolve Clamperl into Huntail, while the Deep Sea Scale is needed to evolve it into Gorebyss. You can only get one in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphier, and Emerald.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald – To get the required items, you must be able to use Surf and Dive. Walk to Route 108 and use Surf to get to the Abandoned Ship. Use Dive to access the second part of the ship.
- This will take you to a room with 5 locked doors. The necessary keys will glow momentarily when you enter the room.
- Find the Scanner in Room 2, and bring the Scanner to Captain Stern in Slateport town. Choose one of the Deep Sea Tooth or Deep Sea Scale as a gift.

Diamonds, Pearls and Platinum – Certain wild Pokémon hold these items. This means that if you catch it, the Pokémon likely has the item. Once you have the item in your bag, you can release the Pokémon into the wild. You can also try using the Thief, Covet, or Trick skills to steal the item.
- You can find Deep Sea Scale from Chinchou, Relicanth, and Lanturn.
- You can find Deep Sea Tooth from Carvanha and Sharpedo.
- Black and White – You can find the Deep Sea Scale on Route 13, and the Deep Sea Scale is also owned by Chinchou, Lanturn, Gorebyss, Relicant, and the wild blue-striped Basculin. You can find the Deep Sea Tooth on Route 13 and Route 17, and the Deep Sea Tooth is also owned by Carvanha, Sharpedo, and the wild red-striped Basculin.

Black 2 and White 2 – Deep Sea Scale and Deep Sea Tooth can be purchased from the antique shop on Join Avenue, which is located between Route 4 and the town of Nimbasa. To open an antique shop, choose the answer “I would want to collect unique items and surprise everyone”.
- To get the right item from an antique shop, the shop must be guarded by Pokémon Ranger Atilio. When Atilio is guarding the shop, buy a Box item for a chance to get Deep Sea Tooth or Deep Sea Scale.
- You can also get Deep Sea Tooth from Carvanha, Sharpedo, and wild red-striped Basculin. You can get Deep Sea Scale from Chinchou, Lanturn, Gorebyss, Relicanth, and wild blue-striped Basculin.
- In Pokémon White 2, you can find both items in the White Forest.
- X and Y – Deep Sea Tooth and Deep Sea Scale can be found in Azure Bay.
Step 3. Give the object to Clamperl
Clamperl needs to hold onto the object that will allow her to evolve into the Pokémon you want. Clamperl doesn't need to be at a certain level to evolve.
Step 4. Exchange your Clamperl
Clamperl will only evolve when swapped. This means that if you want to evolve a Clamperl, you'll need someone willing to trade it back after it evolves. To start the evolution, do the swap and the evolution will happen automatically. The object held will disappear after Clamperl evolves.
