Do you have family, business associates living alone, or a hated ex-boyfriend living in the UK? There may be times when you need to communicate with them by mail. If you don't know how to send them a letter, pay attention to step 1 so that your letter doesn't reach the wrong address.
Step
Step 1. Turn the envelope over so you can see the blank side
Enter the letter you have written and seal the envelope. If you use additional wrapping, such as bubble wrap or cardboard to protect the letter or item you are sending, make sure you write down the address of the recipient before wrapping it.
Step 2. Know where you should write the recipient's address
You will write the address of the recipient in the center of the envelope. Leave room for nine lines of writing in the center, bottom center, or center to bottom right of your envelope or package. Stick the stamp on the top right of the envelope.
Step 3. Write the recipient's name in the center of the envelope
List the title, first name, and last name of the recipient. You can also use initials instead of first names.
- Example full name: Mr. Jim Stewart
- Examples of names with initials: Mr. J. Stewart
Step 4. Write the name of the institution under the name of the recipient
If you are writing a business letter, you must write the institution where the recipient works. Do not include the name of the institution if the letter you are sending is not of a business nature. For example, if you are shipping to someone who works for British Imports/Exports, the address you provide would be something like this:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Step 5. Write the name of the destination building
This section is placed under the name of the recipient or the name of the agency. If the building you are writing to has a building number, you do not need to include the name of the building. For example, if you want to send a letter to Pilton House, write the address below:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
Step 6. Write the number before the street name
For example:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
34 Chester Road
Step 7. Write the name of the village or village on the next line
You only need to do this if in the city where your recipient lives there are two or more streets with the same name. If the address you're going to is on a street that doesn't have a "twin," you can skip this step. An example of a Jim Stewart address would now be:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
34 Chester Road
Greenway End
Step 8. Write the name of the postal destination city
The postal destination city is the main destination for your mail. City names must be written in capital letters. Here's an example if you're sending a letter to the town of Timperley:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
34 Chester Road
Greenway End
TIMPERLEY
Step 9. Know that you don't need to include the name of the area
Even so, there are no restrictions and you can do it too. The following is an example of regional inclusion in the UK:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
34 Chester Road
Greenway End
TIMPERLEY
Altrincham
Step 10. Write down the postal code
Unlike most countries, the UK has a postal code consisting of numbers and letters. You can find your destination postal code by searching the internet. Here is an example of the address you should write down:.
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
34 Chester Road
Greenway End
TIMPERLEY
Altrincham
SO32 4NG
Step 11. Write down the name of the destination country
On the last line, write the name of the country you are sending your letter to. To send a letter to England, write "United Kingdom" or "England". Here is an example of writing a complete destination address:
-
Mr. Jim Stewart
British Imports/Exports
Pilton House
34 Chester Road
Greenway End
TIMPERLEY
Altrincham
SO32 4NG
England
Step 12. Double check the address you wrote down
Each address you write will provide different information, depending on its personal or professional nature, and the inclusion of the name of the region. If you want the address you write to contain all of the information mentioned above, here is a summary:
Name of recipient of the letter, name of business or agency, name of building, street address, name of village, name of city, name of area, postal code, and name of the country
Tips
- "England" and "UK" (United Kingdom) are treated as synonyms by the United States Post Office.
- If you are sending to a mailbox (P. O. Box), replace the street address with the word "P. O. Box" followed by the number.
